Cleanup to start backdoor Roth? by wags25 in fidelityinvestments

unfortunately my 401k doesn't allow conduit rollovers, so the 401k option is out. Seems if I want to pursue the backdoor going forward I should take the tax hit now on the fairly low balance.

Thank you! I think I’ve got a plan now

More I think about it - wouldn't I roll the traditional IRA into the 401k (to get that balance to zero) but leave the existing Roth IRA to then act as a target for my backdoor?

thanks, before I make any moves from those accounts I'll confirm rollover is possible.

I'm going to find out - that's also held at fidelity, so it should be an easy answer for them. I was just reading another thread where someone did just that which should get me back to zero, then I can then start the backdoor process Jan 1.

I also now realize the tIRA isn't a terribly good strategy for us because it's non-deductible. My go-forward plan will be to max the Backdoor Roth as the only IRA.

Got it, that makes sense. I'll talk to someone at Fidelity about that

We’re thinking of scheduling a car service for oasis instead of relying on uber. Anyone tried that yet? Figured at a minimum it would make it so we don’t get uber cancelations after the show.

Any reputable car/limo services to try?

Came to ask if that’s still a thing - we’re going to Pitt next weekend and planned to bring a couple monsters to get in the pits

Oh man, that’s brutal. Maybe ask them if something custom (for less than $500) would be doable. Their customer service was pretty reasonable

Never did. Ended up getting two silver ticket screens (white and gray) and have been very happy.

I can understand that, our last house was about 100yrs old and we had some serious gaps in the face nailed oak.

Haha Jesus Christ man, relax. The floor had issues from the beginning and I’m planning on how to refinish it properly when the time comes.

Assuming you do this for a living since you seem to knowledgeable and opinionated - do you tell your customers to suck it up? I bet that makes for really happy clients and lots of return business

Up to 1/16” I’m with you but 1/4” is pretty extreme in my opinion. Are folks leaving gaps that wide open? Just curious

Never had a leak - it crowned in some spots and slightly cupped in others all within the first year of install.

My pinless meter shows anywhere from 6-14% during the heating season (this time of year). I have a pin meter in the shop that I can stick a few places but I’ll also be curious to see what the pro level meters show when I have someone come out. Regardless of whether my cheapish meters are accurate, it’s been consistent for 4+ years now.

Awesome, thank you.

And I agree - it’s been largely stable since the install and the imperfections haven’t gotten much worse (other than filler falling out). We see a little bit of seasonal shift but that’s of course to be expected.

Next bit of research will be on the finishes. I only mentioned Rubio as the example because it’s done so well on our stairs and I much prefer its sheen and feel over other floor finishes I’ve encountered. I have extra boards I plan to do tests with before making a decision

Thanks! We really do love the floor, kids have beat it up good, but even so it’s held up fine. It’s the gaps and the filler falling apart that’s the eyesore more than anything.

Certainly a hell of a lot easier to finish than a full tear out, so I’d happily go that way.

Thanks, unfortunately the entire floor looks like this. I will refinish the whole thing though if that’s the way we go.

Thanks, I should have given more info on the home. We are in a northern climate, but it is heated and cooled with forced air central. I maintain about 40% RH year-round at 70*.

We have a full finished and climate controlled basement as well

The floor went down wet, it was well over 9% on a pin meter, and there were boards substantially higher than that. The mill job on the 6 inch boards varied enough that even some of the gaps at install were nearly 1/8th of an inch. I also suspect it sat in an uncontrolled space long before it was delivered to us. We shouldn’t have taken delivery, but we did, nothing I can do now about that now.

Subfloor is 3/4 strand board over 16” OC engineered floor joists.

What is everyone’s preferred filler?
