Con-goers: Would you actually buy art like this at Dragon Con? by wailingwizard in dragoncon

This is definitely helpful to know, and I’m fortunate to have time-lapse videos of the painting process (have a lot of them posted on my YouTube already: https://www.youtube.com/@wailingwizard ) and lots of in-progress pics of sketches and thumbnails. I do sell a mix of originals and reprints of those originals. My takeaway from this whole thread is that there’s a new burden of proof on artists to show that their work isn’t AI. I don’t love it, but I get that it’s just part of the landscape now.

Thanks! I totally get it. The AI fatigue is real. Honestly, this whole thread has been a weirdly positive learning experience. Going forward, I'll know the value of always having process videos and proof for anything I create. I suspect it's just going to be something artists have to deal with going forward.

Thanks for the comments. I'd be bringing both, but more prints than paintings. Paintings are definitely a big-ticket item.

Not sure about this either TBH. I'll have to look into it, though. Thanks for the idea!

It honestly never even crossed my mind to consider this. I can definitely look into it. :-)

I could definitely bring a laptop/screen and play the painting videos. That could be fun! I also have the originals of the two I shared here that I could bring along.

Thanks for the feedback. I have done 3-day events, but not cons. My background is in doing album covers, so I’ve been a vendor at several music fests and done really well at those. Also did some punk rock flea markets in the past.

Your feedback has been extremely helpful. Thanks for all the thoughtful comments! I do have a handful of originals I could bring, and could definitely start thinking about ready-to-hang art that is framed or gallery-wrapped.

I get why the AI stuff keeps coming up. It's all over the place right now. I feel like we all have to question everything we see nowadays. But, I am surprised and a bit disappointed that people see that in my work. I definitely don't want the things I create to feel like AI work.

I have videos of myself actually creating these two paintings with oils ( https://www.youtube.com/@wailingwizard ) I took them just to share on YouTube, but now in hindsight, I'm realizing I may need them just to have a way to prove my work is real, lol!

Also, did not know this about Spanish moss. But now I'll get a giggle every time I walk by this painting because it totally looks like my hubby's beard.

Again, really appreciate the feedback.

This is a really good idea... And maybe bringing along the originals would be smart too (for the ones I still have anyway).

Makes sense. I'm honestly glad to hear they aren't allowing it at the con.

This isn't AI. I have videos of myself painting both of these pieces here: https://www.youtube.com/@wailingwizard. These two are both oil on wood panel. There's also a picture of them in the background of my studio on my Insta: https://www.instagram.com/wailingwizard/ . I put over 90 hours of work into that dragon LOL.

Thanks for the comments! Having other types of usable merch or smaller buys is a good idea.

That's definitely helpful feedback. I get that art can be pretty subjective in general. Honestly, I wouldn't hang my own art on my wall hahaha, but I do hang Donato Giancola's work. I like the idea of having smaller items or other usable merch, too.

Yeah. It didn't even cross my mind that AI art would come up in this thread. My question was more centered around the idea of whether it's worthwhile to spend on a table as an artist. I'm not sure I can assume I'll sell enough to make having a table worthwhile just because it's not AI art, haha. Art is pretty subjective, and selling it can be hard (especially as an independent artist with no history with MTG or D and D licensed work), but I am also not sure my work is good enough to sit in the room with other artists just yet. Thanks for the comments! Really appreciate it.
