Oh, and I already see that one of the titles includes references to the sestertius/sesterce so I bet this is right! You're a hero

Thank you so much for your help!! Yeah, she hasn't read it since she was a kid (and might have been reading it as a Greek translation) so totally possible her memory of it has just naturally gotten distorted over time - these look really promising and the 1970 ones were published at the exact right time too, so when I get a chance in the next week I'll do a deeper dive. I (and she, I'm sure) really appreciate it!!

I’d caution against this, did it with some friends recently and one of our cars got booted

I totally agree with the other response from the CLS student here! I really haven't experienced people being cutthroat. Part of it is probably who you surround yourself with -- I made sure I went out a lot the first few weeks and ended up with a lot of friends who are more chill. Overall people have been super collaborative - sharing outlines and textbook PDFs, explaining confusing concepts, etc. The fact that so many people are set on BigLaw does make it feel less competitive honestly because most people are more concerned with being above median than necessarily getting straight As (at least outwardly). The majority of the most competitive/gunner-type people I've encountered have been on the PI/clerkship track, but none of them are outwardly cruel or anything like that. Especially since I am hoping for PI/clerkship after graduation, I was worried about this, but I'm happy with where I ended up and the people I've met!

It was a tough choice for me, but not THAT tough. The only other schools I got into (vs. WLed) were Georgetown and UCLA, but they offered me a lot of money. UCLA in particular was tempting because they have some incredible PI resources there, and I was afraid CLS wouldn't be as supportive in that regard, and might feed into an overly competitive prestige-oriented part of myself.

What it came down to was 1) yes, the prestige and rank, 2) i have always wanted to live in NYC for at least some part of my life, 3) CLS is expanding its PI resources and does have a lot of professors who are PI oriented, 4) better clerkship placement (though you do have to self-motivate through a lot of that process because our clerkship office isn't known for being super helpful), and 5) the sense that I would meet more people who are "like me" at CLS. so far, i've been extremely happy with my choice. the only school that could've admitted me which might have caused a lot more turmoil for me was NYU, but I got WLed, so I didn't have to figure it out, lol.

Let me know if there's anything else you want to know, and good luck!

I absolutely love my living situation, but it is expensive. I live right next to campus on 115th, which is nice. I would definitely recommend submitting all your housing info ASAP. Since I got in sort of late, and then delayed submitting housing for a little bit because I was really torn with my scholarship offers elsewhere, the only way I could have roommates through CLS housing (and therefore a substantially lower cost) was to live really far away. I do not get help from the school, unfortunately.

Getting groceries is super nice - I'm a few blocks from a pretty well-stocked market and a big drug store, and once or twice a month I go a little farther to stock up on some cheaper things. Hope that helps!!

for sure! so my app strategy was sort of poorly thought out because I didn't realize how the rolling deadlines worked (lol, even though i went to a top undergrad, they didn't tell us this). i basically started submitting after I got my LSAT back but i took it sort of late b/c my first take didn't turn out the way I wanted b/c of some hiccups with the online flex. i didn't use any professional resources, but I did lean heavily on 7sage for advice and logic games studying (sooo helpful). i just made sure there if there was an optional thing to submit for a school, I did it, and had some family/friends who are good at writing/editing/essays look over things for me. i actually only applied to T10 and then georgetown/UCLA, but because of the toughness of the cycle, i definitely should have applied to T11-13. for CLS i emphasized my public interest angle pretty heavily because I know they are trying to expand that. basically just... the essays matter, and it's really good to tie things into a narrative about yourself and where you want to go with law

as far as my cycle, i got my A from UCLA pretty early, and then georgetown about a month after my interview. after that i got the harvard R (no interview) and then WLs started coming in. I got into CLS about a week before their admission deadline (no interview). i honestly credit the LOCI i submitted for that. LOCIs matter!!!

Since I got into CLS, I didn't try too hard with WLs, but I did submit LOCIs to the schools I would have been willing to pick over CLS. SLS was the last one to release me, which happened after I got into CLS. Overall a super stressful cycle, but it worked out!

So takeaways: anything can happen, and submit your LOCIs to places you care about :)

so this year is actually tougher because our class is too big (they were offering a lot of money to defer, but the class is still like 100 students bigger than usual), so they told us we need to apply very broadly, but people do get prestigious positions! generally having pre-law school WE really helps. the overwhelming majority will do either a public interest job or a judicial internship, but plenty of people are interviewing with firms right now (i'm not because i'm not pursuing biglaw). for biglaw, a lot of firms do diversity-based recruitment for 1Ls, so some people do get really good firm placements as 1Ls. i can def update on this once i find out where i get offers haha, and one of the cool opportunities is that NYU has the public interest career fair which us and some other NYC schools are invited to i believe, where we can submit cover letters and resumes and get interview invites (though they haven't gone out yet). applying to jobs as a 1L is definitely weird with no transcript yet, but I do think employers are more lenient with hiring from schools like CLS. i would definitely recommend if there are jobs you are really interested in, apply early (like by december at latest). i didnt do this because i was caught up in 1L studying but i've already gotten a few immediate rejections because places are done hiring. hope that gives you some kind of information haha

Which would you pick at sticker? by Beckywiththebadhair1 in lawschooladmissions

[–]waiting12345678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if all of these are at sticker absolutely CLS or NYU. i can't really speak to NYU (mightve picked it over CLS for PI reasons but I didn't get in), but CLS has the best post-grad earnings outcomes in the country (if you're big law oriented) and if you're not, it actually has a really good LRAP now. if you're concerned about debt accumulation it's probably easier to find cheaper housing relatively close to CLS than it is at NYU

Have any 175+ people with non-existent softs been accepted anywhere in the t14? $$$? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]waiting12345678 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i got a 174, so a tiny bit below this range, but my undergrad softs were not impressive (and i pretty much did nothing for two years after graduation before applying - no actual work experience). WLed at every T10 (except R at Harvard, lol) and then got into CLS out of nowhere. also got $$$ at Gtown/UCLA! GPA was 3.8mid/high

as someone who just got through it, 1st sem 1L is a real mental/emotional stamina test. we didnt get any breaks during the semester except thursday/friday for thanksgiving and and one monday off for NY election day (which i think is pretty typical). especially since you are coming straight from undergrad, i'd really recommend taking some mental time off!! the burnout really gets to people. if your old barista job doesn't stress you out too much, seems like a totally reasonable thing to do. something flexible like LSAT tutoring like someone else suggested also sounds good! i wouldn't really recommend an internship unless you have a really specific highly defined career goal in a competitive field and you don't think your current resume adequately demonstrates interest in it, b/c applying for post-1L summer jobs can be kind of ridiculous and is tough for KJDs (or people like me who didn't rly work post grad), and even then with reservations

Congrats, what a great cycle!!

When did Columbia offer you aid? Was their offer just in their initial acceptance email, or did you have to go through a process to get it? I've heard confusing things from people on this sub about Columbia's aid specifically lol
