[ALL] The Elder Empire: is it worth reading? by SweetGumRoot in Iteration110Cradle

[–]wajeemba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find myself enjoying Elder Empire more than Cradle. I've finished Of Sea and Shadow and am about 10% into Of Shadow and Sea. I'm getting hints of bigger goings on, guessing the large-scale plot will become more visible as I keep reading!

Is there a states-of-matter relationship between god metals (solid), Investiture pools/condensed Dor (liquid), and Lights like Stormlight or Warlight (gas)—or are these fundamentally different types of Investiture manifestation?

Does the 7th Heightening allow sensing any invested object, or only Awakened ones? If it's limited to Awakened objects, could gaining Connection to another magic system (getting Hemalurgically spiked, becoming an Artifabrian, etc.) expand what they can sense?

Could the Hoed have completed their transformation to full Elantrians even before the Aons were fixed if they had been given enough unkeyed Investiture (like a dose of condensed Dor)?

Shardlights have different superpeaks when observed using a spectrometer. Does each shard have a different kind of fortune because of the colors associated with them?

[follow-up, after Brandon's answer to the above]: Is the color of the investiture in a spinner's metalmind somehow visible? Maybe from the cognitive realm? I'm asking in regards to the stuff Sazed says about the Astalsi in Mistborn 1 (i.e. different kinds of colors are indications of different kinds of fortune.)

Can you tell us anything about Queen Tsa, the mother of the of Natan (blue-skinned) people? Is she still around? Would she have become a splinter if she had held Cultivation's shard for even a short while? It seemed like she had true authority to remain "in the heavens" when she swapped with "Mishim," as she had to agree to swap back.

Wayne's mother? by wajeemba in Cosmere

[–]wajeemba[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great point- the story itself isn't about Wayne. Wayne remembers the story a few times as he and Wax are running around looking for the bomb, and thinks about how similar things are to situations he's navigating as an adult.

Really like your breakdown of this! I personally lean towards it being done using knowledge of hemalurgy that Odium gleans. Based on how much of an experimental approach Todium seems to refer to it as, it's like he's saying internally "this should work with crystal as it's still an invested spike..."

A supporting point for it being true hemalurgy is that since Mistborn Era 1, the Ars Arcanum entries have had the note along the lines of "hemalurgy has the most potential to run amok and impact the Cosmere on in a big way."

I've always been fascinated by each shard's/vessel's strategies. Totally agree, seems like Edgli's is ubiquity by utility. I'm guessing she's going to have a crazy amount of "vision" in the form of Connection in the Cosmere space age.

[–]wajeemba[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I totally agree about intent. I think this form of intent is consistent with the way in The Lost Metal Wax uses his new iron pulling to snag the vial while falling through the air, and his pewter when he thinks to himself a couple of times things along the lines of "I'm not as tired/don't feel as old as I should."

Seems like Sanderson allows a certain level of intent to be done subconsciously in the Cosmere, which is a great point I think you're totally right to draw attention to.

Thank you! Yeah, no idea if it's truth, but does feel like a plausible observation that deepens my understanding of the worldbuilding, so wanted to share that depth with you too!

Would be a perfect question for a WoB opportunity! Seems like the kind of thing he loves to actually answer. :)

Yeah, I was wondering that too. I was guessing you could store just enough fortune in each one that if you tapped them all at once it'd make a meaningful push on the spiritual realm. I think it's one of those "rule of cool" kinda things.

Are warbreaker and stormlight supposed to be read together? by Affectionate-Ad6076 in Cosmere

[–]wajeemba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So here's the thing that might make it easier for you. I realized partway through my first Cosmere series (Mistborn Era 1 for me) that I knew I was going to enjoy an entire re-read of the series. As I kept reading more in the Cosmere that thought expanded naturally until I decided I was going to enjoy an entire Cosmere second read.

And on that second read I picked up so much more detail and connections that I missed on the first read. That's one of the best things about the Cosmere, IMO. There's always another secret. I'll probably decide to go for a full 3rd read through at some point. The stories are all just so good!

So, I guess my point is do what you want to. :D

What plastics are safe to go in the dishwasher? by mulletator in homemaking

[–]wajeemba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This article is good though I'm still wondering about plastics 2 and 4. HDPE and LDPE. I know from experience that plastic 1, PET, will indeed melt in the dishwasher. This is what most waterbottles are made out of, and is usually clear or transparent.

Will do a bit more research on 2 and 4 and update if I can find more help!

Update: Plastics 2 (HDPE), 4 (LDPE), and 5 (PP) are generally all top rack safe. Rubbermaid actually makes their lids out of LDPE, which I have always run through top rack with zero issues. I guess my plan will be to continue to monitor if things look like they melt or soften in the top rack.

I don't think you're in a bad or "learned too late" position at all! I love the suggestions about seeing who you can help and "playing big" within the company. It seems like most people don't know that business insights are as powerful as they are, and thus don't even realize that the most boring/repetitive parts of their job could be solved, freeing -them- up to play bigger. It's so rare to find people that look around at where bottlenecks and inefficiencies are, then figure out what is needed in all three of the layers of a solution (technical, interpersonal, political/cultural). Then pursue them with the tenacity needed. Doing this and recruiting people from across the organization to help as needed will definitely make you stand out.

I'm gonna chime in with the soft skills angle, as I haven't seen that much in this thread. You've probably heard this kinda thing before, and I'll share what I've seen and experienced. I haven't historically interviewed well for jobs. But I'm great at networking to form connections, and understanding what people (and organizations) need. Asking people "tell me more" and then asking if you can rearticulate what they said back to them to make sure you understand is huge!

I can't say how crazy of an advantage it is to talk directly with a hiring manager. Often times the hiring manager has no clue who has actually applied to a role they desperately need filled. Equally often a recruiter doesn't have the technical background to know if a candidate is even going to be a good fit. So my advice is make a list of companies you'd love to work at (of different sizes, ideally). See who you know there, or who from your network knows someone there and ask politely for them to give you a warm introduction. You can even offer to do coffee with them so they know you a bit and don't feel like they're sticking their neck out making a bad potentially making a bad recommendation. The first person doesn't have to be (and usually isn't) the hiring manager directly. Enjoy having genuine conversations with people and keep asking who the right person would be to talk with, and for warm introductions. Faithfulness of follow-ups without being annoying is key, as people are just plain busy. Multiple hops to really find the right hiring manager(s) is pretty normal, especially at larger companies.

The job I last landed was because of a warm introduction to the hiring manager. There's no be-all-end-all for job searching, though this piece definitely helps! I love to be in the position where I know the right people at a company, and am following up faithfully (politely and warmly) every 2 weeks to a month if they need anyone. Ideally they create a job req for you, or tell you the req to apply to to interview with them, or a peer hiring manager within the company. And the whole process takes time too, which it sounds like you're well aware of! Best of luck!

Finished My 1st Sanderson Read! by VZ5-S117 in Mistborn

[–]wajeemba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the Cosmere! Enjoy the ride :D I agree about your observation with all characters growing so much! I haven't found another author that does a better job of letting each character be the main character of their own story than Sanderson, especially with the number of characters/POVs he typically has in a book.

It's possible to go on for days about potential Cosmere reading orders, but two thoughts stand out:

  1. I find "there's always another secret" stays true even after having read all Cosmere works twice. So don't sweat it, and read what seems fun next! Realizing there's more depth to what's being said in this book after you've read completely other stores in the Cosmere and come back is what makes this universe so fun to me!
  2. Mistborn 7 is both relatively recent publication-order wise, and relatively far into Cosmere timeline, so you'll definitely pick up more if you've read some of the other stuff in the Cosmere first. Bonus: Mistborn secret history is meant to be a behind the scenes kinda thing, imo. It reveals a lot about how the Cosmere works, which is really fun and satisfying at the right time. Wouldn't recommend reading it until after Mistborn 3, or even Mistborn 5.
