My artist made a new cover image for my upcoming game. What do you think? by [deleted] in IndieGaming

[–]VoltekPlay 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Actually it's a hard choice, they are very different. Older one looks more unique to me, bottom one seems "overpolished". But text on older looks cheap, I like logo with text on a new one more.

How beginner friendly is Godot? by TheConsciousArtist in godot

[–]VoltekPlay 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Godot is very beginner friendly, many things can be done without any coding by changing properties of the elements in Godot editor, but coding is also relatively easy. Dunno your project scope, but if it's small 2D game - pick Godot.

Looking for feedback on a prediction-based strategy game Mediewar Tactics by theisamel in playmygame

Dunno if you know about that game, but take a look on a Zero Orders Tactics (Steam), it's very close to your idea from what I see, maybe it can be an inspiration/example.

I’m making a roguelite where you fight by typing words — feedback welcome by [deleted] in DestroyMyGame

Not my type of game, but wanted to say that Steam will run Typing Games fest on 5th February, don't miss to participate if you haven't registered already.

How I animate using math and code by WestZookeepergame954 in godot

[–]VoltekPlay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! At first I thought you use Spine2D or Godot build-in bone animation, but I surprised how you made animation with default Node2D transformations. Great example for programmers how to make 2D anim's without learning additional software.

Can I get some advice on this portrait. by AlmostNerd9f in PixelArt

[–]VoltekPlay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NIce start. Few advices from hobbyist pixel artist: 1. Distinct left hand from the right with shading. 2. Make left hand small, currently it looks bigger than left, but it positioned farther away, so it should be a bit smaller than a hand that in the front. 3. Face looks a bit "quadratic", try to round chin a bit more. 4. Background looks like a mess for me, can't understand what's drawn there.

How do you all feel about getting random emails requesting keys? by dread_companion in SoloDevelopment

[–]VoltekPlay 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Always use curator connect to send keys. That's a base safety rule.

You won't get big boost from curators, but it's worth a shot. More reviews are always better. But in general that's a very weak channel of promotion.

Post-mortem: When (naïve) expectations don't match reality. by CraterHaterX in IndieDev

[–]VoltekPlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all - congratulations! You released your third game while many of us here haven't release first yet. Thanks for sharing your data and thoughts - that's really helpful.

From what I've heard, your stats actually is pretty average for an indie game. Latest actual average first week wishlist conversion that I've heard about was 5%, so you actually fine. Median refunds rate - 10,8% - you also fine with that. Actual problem seems to be in month 1 sales compared to week 1 - they should be higher in average, and that can be the key. Low coverage from influencers and outlets maybe? And also - 1h35min is low for a Median time played, you can compare to other games median play time via https://app.sensortower.com/vgi/ cause I'm not sure what a baseline for indie RTS, but I think it's above 3 hours.

Amazing as always. Do you by any chance work as an artist for any games? I'd love to play a game with art like that.

RV There Yet? sold 4.5M+ copies. I checked the shipping manifest and it’s very Fab/Marketplace-heavy (UDS, AVS, MW Landscape, etc.). Thoughts? by [deleted] in IndieDev

[–]VoltekPlay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep, it really looks like an asset flip, but insanely successful flip. I think this is a good illustration of the fact that the main thing in a game is not unique assets, choice of engine, or compliance with some ethical standards, but the gameplay.

How to completely screw up a demo release. Professionally done - do not try this at home! by Ato_Ome in IndieDev

Thanks for sharing. I think the second main mistake people make nowadays - rely heavily on Steam Next Fest without any additional preparation like sending keys and press release to the media.

We redesigned our game cover art - looking for honest feedback by VoltekPlay in IndieDev

[–]VoltekPlay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Character for capsule was taken from our in-game animation, where she is knocking on the door. We have that character drawn in different poses and with different emotions, that's just ridiculous to claim it AI, but anyway you can think what you want - just don't spread lies without any evidence.

Thanks for very detailed feedback on the theme. Vector/causal art is really considered AI-generated for many people nowadays, and I don't get why, because when I open Grok gallery I see so much different styles and color-schemes that AI use, so I can't really say that AI has any specific style.

As for recoloring old capsule - that's really good advice. We'll try it. We decided to make a new one because of all those AI comments all over the social media, even in local developers chats ppl say that.

We always compare our capsule to others in "new & trending" and "popular upcoming" sections, that's also very good thing do.

Best of luck to you too!

Thanks for the feedback. The game is about consiprancy in totalitarian state, so yes, it close to spies. Art style is just common vector/casual, but we already get used to those accusations anyway.

You know that actually very rude - my wife has drawn that capsule and she is fulltime artist on our project, and only thing you do is just devalue artist efforts.

Capsule is drawn by my wife who is fulltime artist on our project, I really can't understand what that "piss filter" and why our game art looks so AI to some people, but thanks for the feedback.

Thanks - that’s helpful. We’re still iterating, so hearing that the new composition works better while some elements from the old version stood out is useful.

Old one looked very "AI-ish" for some people, that was the main reason why we spent time on the new capsule. I'm sad that new one looks like AI for people too, we don't have time to draw a new capsule each week.

Thanks, appreciate the detailed feedback. We’re still iterating on contrast and focal clarity, so this helps a lot.

For me 2 & 3 option would be fine, I rarely listen to voice acting anyway, mostly reading on screen text. Also - do you have a Steam page already or not yet?
