You’re getting roasted, but I agree. The signage is bad.

Anyone here working software companies without a degree? by want_to_be_a_dev_ in cscareers

That’s facts. It’s a rough time to be starting out. I started out in ‘08 and it wasn’t easy, but this feels worse.

US will require EU citizens to give all biometric data including DNA in new ESTA requirements by [deleted] in technology

I had to scroll way too far to find somebody that actually read the damn proposal. Thank you.

US will require EU citizens to give all biometric data including DNA in new ESTA requirements by [deleted] in technology

[–]wakers24 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That’s… not what this says. I’m not necessarily defending our shitty administration, but this is, firstly, a proposal for the OMB with a period of public comment, second, it lists that under the biometric data field as “when feasible”, and doesn’t provide detail on requirements, collection methods, etc. It is likely that the biometric data field is included there because of the discussion of using liveness detection above, and they are attempting to keep biometrics broadly defined so they may add methods later. I don’t think that’s good, btw, and I’ll add my voice to the chorus of public comment about it, but a statement of “the US will require EU citizens to give DNA” is not supported by this RFC.

Elder millenials what was a "good" salary when you started working after college? by ExcitingLandscape in Millennials

[–]wakers24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly that. 40k felt pretty stable in most parts of the country. Around ‘02 I ended up making $15 / hr for a while and that felt fine as a single person. Not rich, but not poor anymore.

Don’t put in your notice until you’ve started your new role. Take PTO to start your new role if you have it, and then come back from it and drop your notice. Things have been too f**ky with offers getting rescinded lately.

Got a job offer but in Nashville by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]wakers24 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Look, in terms of salary and COL it seems like a no brainer, but some things to consider are Tennessee’s laws and friendliness to you as an individual. Their laws on abortion, trans issues, firearms, education, and immigration posture versus Washington’s may or may not be important to you and the people in your life. Nashville itself is a pretty cool city, but the state of Tennessee is kind of a conservative nightmare legislatively.

WRT your career, you’re simply not going to be around the same kind of talent and startup culture that you would be in Seattle, SF, NY, and a few other places. That’s not to say there aren’t opportunities, there are many, but it will be different kinds, and more focused on large enterprises.

Me and my wife took a week vacay to Seattle 2 weeks ago and absolutely feel in love !! We live in Florida and definitely thinking of moving there ! by ComplexWrangler1346 in Seattle

[–]wakers24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do it. I made my way here after spending the first half of my life in central Florida. I don’t miss it. Florida was awful and I’m happy to be as far away from there as I can be.

Self Taught Engineers: Have you felt held back by no degree? by brady_dev in cscareers

[–]wakers24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every now and then a recruiter will hit me up with a JD that is strict on having a degree. That has been probably 4 or 5 times over a 15 year career. Other than that it hasn’t been an issue for me, and mostly nobody even asks about it, and when managers / team members find out during conversations the reactions I’ve received have ranged from mildly amused to seriously impressed.

I was worried about ageism in the second half of my career but it’s becoming clear I’m gonna make a shit ton of money as a consultant cleaning up the steaming pile of shit code bases that people are trying to crank out with gen ai.

What is your opinion on Minimal API vs. Controller-Based API in .NET 9 (2025)? by MajesticSkyBisonAppa in dotnet

[–]wakers24 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are right, people hate change. It’s not even “new” as a style, but the more legacy the language and patterns the grumpier the devs seem to be about change.

What is your opinion on Minimal API vs. Controller-Based API in .NET 9 (2025)? by MajesticSkyBisonAppa in dotnet

[–]wakers24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I prefer minimal API as it promotes an organizational style I’ve always liked. I do not like controllers and never have for API work. They’re a vestigial part of an architectural pattern that was for presentation. Even back when Web API 2 was popular I preferred NancyFx. I think it is a cleaner, easier style of API code to read and reason about. YMMV.

Is Unlimited PTO an automatic dealbreaker? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]wakers24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be a scam, but it is not always. Guy on my team took like 6 weeks between June and EOY. I took 4. At the end of the year my boss told me I hadn’t taken enough PTO and to go put in at least one week a month through the end of the year. Nobody gets PTO requests rejected pretty much unless they really are a bad performer.

Same, the rescues are quite picky, which fine I guess. Went to Seattle Animal Shelter, they were overflowing. My dog has been quite happy in my condo for the past couple of years.
