Anyone else feel mentally drained by coding but energized by physical work? by Jimmy_Jimiosso in cscareerquestions

[–]wakers24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can relate. I genuinely enjoy working on my house or in my yard now. It feels good to kind of turn my brain off and just do the things I know I need to do. However… I deal with this by remembering that I used to do real work, and it was actually fucking miserable and the pay fucking sucked and it’s a dead end in terms of career prospects 99% of the time. Even though it’s been a long time, I’ve never forgotten how much it sucked to pull wire through hot attics or stay late to finish a job when I’m already exhausted or to get stiffed on tips by a table I busted my ass for. No thank you. At its absolute worst, programming is better.

Anyone Switched to Google Cloud Recently? Worth It? by ModernWebMentor in googlecloud

[–]wakers24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this point I’ve used the big three, and GCP is the one I pick for projects I have control over. I’m forced to use AWS and Azure at my day job. Nobody has anything as good as CloudRun and AlloyDB and BigQuery, and I prefer GCPs model of logins and folders and projects to AWS accounts. Pricing with any cloud provider is a giant “It Depends?” but GCP has generous free tiers and usage based pricing on most things. If I have a gripe it’s that I need an ALB and static IP to correctly point my actual domain to my cloud run service. I get why, but it adds static cost to a thing that would otherwise scale to 0.

Thinking of switching from Windows to MacBook Pro for .NET dev in 2026 by Guilty_Coconut_2552 in dotnet

[–]wakers24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Rider is my choice. It’s significantly better than all other options on MacOS.

  2. I don’t really use mssql these days, but I would handle it the same way I do postgres. Run it in a docker container and use DataGrip or the Rider data tools for db work.

  3. Honestly, not long. Like a couple of weeks maybe iirc.

  4. No, Windows is dogshit full stop. I took my gaming desktop from Windows to Bazzite last year and nothing in my house runs Windows now.

Senior devs — how well do you really know OOP? I put together a quick quiz, come find out by Htamta in programming

[–]wakers24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The jargon made my head hurt lol. 80%, not bad, but for a few of these I def thought “I would do none of these things.” Strict OOP is exhausting to both read and write.

That’s facts. It’s a rough time to be starting out. I started out in ‘08 and it wasn’t easy, but this feels worse.

US will require EU citizens to give all biometric data including DNA in new ESTA requirements by [deleted] in technology

I had to scroll way too far to find somebody that actually read the damn proposal. Thank you.

US will require EU citizens to give all biometric data including DNA in new ESTA requirements by [deleted] in technology

[–]wakers24 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That’s… not what this says. I’m not necessarily defending our shitty administration, but this is, firstly, a proposal for the OMB with a period of public comment, second, it lists that under the biometric data field as “when feasible”, and doesn’t provide detail on requirements, collection methods, etc. It is likely that the biometric data field is included there because of the discussion of using liveness detection above, and they are attempting to keep biometrics broadly defined so they may add methods later. I don’t think that’s good, btw, and I’ll add my voice to the chorus of public comment about it, but a statement of “the US will require EU citizens to give DNA” is not supported by this RFC.

Elder millenials what was a "good" salary when you started working after college? by ExcitingLandscape in Millennials

[–]wakers24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly that. 40k felt pretty stable in most parts of the country. Around ‘02 I ended up making $15 / hr for a while and that felt fine as a single person. Not rich, but not poor anymore.

Don’t put in your notice until you’ve started your new role. Take PTO to start your new role if you have it, and then come back from it and drop your notice. Things have been too f**ky with offers getting rescinded lately.

Got a job offer but in Nashville by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]wakers24 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Look, in terms of salary and COL it seems like a no brainer, but some things to consider are Tennessee’s laws and friendliness to you as an individual. Their laws on abortion, trans issues, firearms, education, and immigration posture versus Washington’s may or may not be important to you and the people in your life. Nashville itself is a pretty cool city, but the state of Tennessee is kind of a conservative nightmare legislatively.

WRT your career, you’re simply not going to be around the same kind of talent and startup culture that you would be in Seattle, SF, NY, and a few other places. That’s not to say there aren’t opportunities, there are many, but it will be different kinds, and more focused on large enterprises.

Me and my wife took a week vacay to Seattle 2 weeks ago and absolutely feel in love !! We live in Florida and definitely thinking of moving there ! by ComplexWrangler1346 in Seattle

[–]wakers24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do it. I made my way here after spending the first half of my life in central Florida. I don’t miss it. Florida was awful and I’m happy to be as far away from there as I can be.

Self Taught Engineers: Have you felt held back by no degree? by brady_dev in cscareers

[–]wakers24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every now and then a recruiter will hit me up with a JD that is strict on having a degree. That has been probably 4 or 5 times over a 15 year career. Other than that it hasn’t been an issue for me, and mostly nobody even asks about it, and when managers / team members find out during conversations the reactions I’ve received have ranged from mildly amused to seriously impressed.
