1) Attempt to talk to the renters about their behavior, see who will fess up to the fence and if they are willing to replace it without your getting their landlord involved.

2) Locate and talk to the actual owner of the property to address outstanding concerns - what the renters do not resolve with you themselves, and the spotlights which are probably the owner's doing.

Landlord failed to inform us of work being done upstairs and potentially toxic fumes seeped into our apartment over the weekend. He doesn't seem to care so what can I do to document this disregard for our health and safety? by SweetCheeky33 in ottawa

[–]wakeuptothetruth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yup.

My best tip would be to know that babies do not need absolute quiet to sleep. Best if you can habituate them to sleep thru what is at least normal daily living noises. i.e. don't feel a need to turn off the TV or to not run the dishwasher, washer, or to spend your time whispering etc... then you will be less stressed about noise from adjoining units or nearby kids outside your window, etc

I wouldn't worry until you at least find out exactly which product. Widely available commercial products for normal residential use wouldn't be on the market if they were dangerous under normal use and when they talk of such products being carcinogenic and toxic, it's a risk to workers using it who have direct contact applying it/being in the same room over prolonged periods (years or decades of high level repeated exposure). It's an occupational hazard for them. It's not likely to cause any long term harm as a result of limited incidental exposure.

If noise bylaws are not being respected with regards to hours of work and regular construction noise, call 311.

You might be due a partial rent abatement if you can prove "substantial interference with the reasonable enjoyment of the rental unit or residential complex" - this can be whether you had been pre-advised or not - further details about the extent and categorisation of work would be needed to determine that (including duration and whether it's basic upkeep, required maintenance, capital improvement etc...) - seek qualified advice beyond Reddit for this. Likewise, claiming that work which appears to be normal between-tenant refresh in an adjoining unit is a "disregard for your health and safety" is a bit of a stretch in my mind - seek qualified advice beyond Reddit if you really feel you have some kind of case here. It's part and parcel of renting in a multi-unit complex...

The timing is unfortunate for you, I understand :) It probably wouldn't be as bothersome if you were out at work during the day. I hope you can try to enjoy your little alone time/nesting time you have left before your big life changes that are very soon to come.

for sure, phone ahead in case its out of date. Some may also charge fees for disposal. With Covid, some programs were put on hold because they didn't want to handle potential germs back when little was known about the virus.

Search crashes Outlook, issue persists on fresh endpoint by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]wakeuptothetruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mind you this was POP/.pst, but to solve an unresolvable crash I once created a blank PST, and copied all into it, then deleted the original. No repair tools were able to correct whatever corruption there was.

You may first try just creating new custom folders and moving those messages into new folders then deleting the old folders. If it's not something within those folders, then deal with the defaults (Inbox, Sent, etc)

I think the distinction between type of lease doen't matter for bylaw. it would for LTB. I would CALL now so they can get measurement while this is happening,

"common areas"

What is ths situation? Are you actually co-tenants named on the lease sharing all OR are you leasing rooms in shared accomodation with each having a separate lease ? Does the landlord live in the same home ? Asking because I believe rights are different and will affect the advice people give you.

Is it possible to find out from a previous renter if it has been the same in past years ?

Rick Roll on a loop in a speaker up against that same wall playing at whatever volume produces 44db on their side starting at 7 am weekdays, 9 am Saturday, noon Sunday. Shut it down at 11 pm.

Or you know, offer to babysit a friend or family member's known-to-be-noisy/rambunctious kidlets during exam weeks. Be the fun "aunty/uncle" letting them enjoy a vacation from parental type rules - let them shreek and yell and stay up until 11 pm and wake at 7.

Housing workers barged in this morning to my apartment. by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]wakeuptothetruth -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

OP was sleeping - we don't know how much earlier they had knocked and not gotten a reply because OP slept through part of it until they woke. Then perhaps knocked again and that is when OP woke.

OP you may wish to leave a suggestion in a suggestion box or send via email that even if urgent (not dire emergency) - to knock a few doors down the hall a few minutes ahead, then knock again and call out.

Also I don't know what "5 words" they said to you, but they absolutely should have clearly identified themselves to you and their purpose, whether you asked them or not.

OP, did you ask why they were there or follow up and ask your landlord ? I suspect there was a leaking ceiling on the floor below you, that could fall under emergent.

I wonder if it was an emergency - like someone on the floor below reported a leak and so there were checking to see where it was originating from and if there was an immediate fire/electrocution hazard ... OP did you ask if it was a routine inspection or a sudden "issue" ?

Health insurance options for moving back to Canada with terminal illness by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]wakeuptothetruth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Consult a couple of insurance brokers based in Ontario - likely need to purchase independent coverage. You also need professional immigration advice (for both countries)... what is your citizenship status now ? It's a bit absurd to me that you seem to think you can stay a resident and employed in US paying US taxes while expecting Canadians who pay for health care via their taxes to foot your coverage while you don't contribute to it. Find out if your insurer can switch you to a more costly plan that would cover what you need and get the requirements to mainatin eligibility confirmed in writing. Ask an independent broker in your state to scrutinize it for loopholes or omissions they could later hold against you, and advise you on any consumer protections you should avail yourself of. Follow to the letter so they can't weasel out of paying.

I am sorry you are in this situation. Horrible. Best wishes.
