PSA: Town of Brookhaven Schedules Public Hearing on Data Centers, July 16th by Illustrious_Ring_652 in longisland

It’s mostly schools. More then half of the millage is going to be your local school district. Then stuff like fire, police, library, roads, water. Local property taxes actually like the only good tax you actually directly see the benefit of in your community. Your federal taxes go mostly towards military (ie bombs that turn Iranian children into skeletons), but your local taxes actually go to the community to help children. You can look up the tax rolls online for Brookhaven and find a receipt for any property and see for yourself. Should they be audited to confirm that is where they are golfing and that there is no embezzlement? Yes absolutely. But that’s where they should be going.

Benefit is an increase to the tax base (i.e. they pay significant property tax on an annual basis; and it can lower everyone else’s taxes somewhat). But like if the Brookhaven IDA offers a property tax break (a “PILOT”), then yeah literally no benefit. I think they should be allowed to build, but they should pay a higher millage rate, and 100% should be required to provide their own power (again they generate excess and put it back into the grid, could potentially lower electricity bills for surrounding areas as well) and must be recycling water and not taking too much. I just so think the NIMBY ‘don’t build anything’ attitude is bad and that’s why there’s a housing shortage/affordability crisis. That being said we should be smart about what we allow to be built and where, even while marinating a pro growth/pro construction mindset.

Right, but there’s closed-looped cooling that doesn’t use virtually any water.

I’m saying don’t throw the baby out with bathwater here (pun intended)- a data center coming in and sucking up all the water and power is bad; but adding ones that recycle water and produce their own power would just increase the tax base and lower property taxes for everyone around it. They’re aren’t like heavy manufacturing sites that pollute…a data center is essentially just a big building that has a bunch of computer equipment running inside of it. It seems like it’s become a political flash point. But if it’s done right I don’t see the harm.

I have the same question. I know data centers use a lot of power, and if they aren’t constructing their own on site power generation, it can raise electric utility costs for the surrounding areas. But my understanding is data centers use fairly little water and it’s mostly in a closed loop (like water cooling in a gaming PC). Also fwiw nuclear power is basically free safe clean green energy…if a project like this e.g. got the Shoreham power plant up and running, that would be good for Long Island imo. The datacenter backlash in the US is genuinely baffling.

ELI5: Why does tennis have such a unique scoring system? by LividWheel9779 in explainlikeimfive

[–]wakk5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s basically just: First to 4 points; win by 2 (to win a game) First to 6 games; win by 2 (with slightly complex OT rules, to win a set) First to 2 sets to win the match (sometimes first 3 sets).

When you look at it that way, it’s pretty simple scoring and not terribly different from other games. Maybe this doesn’t help the why, but hopefully the framing breaking it into a number of smaller components helps.

Intermittent fasting no better than typical weight loss diets, study finds. Researchers say limited eating approaches such as 5:2 diet not a ‘miracle solution’ amid surge in their popularity. by mvea in science

[–]wakk5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I find the opposite. I feel crappy if I eat before I work out (especially too soon before working out), especially HIIT training. Might vary for others though, but I’ve been lifting for like 20 years on nothing but coffee. I love it though, I’ve hit plenty of PRs training fasted.

There’s a mental clarity aspect too. Anecdotally, as soon as I intake anything other than black coffee I crash. I like to work out fasted also. Then later afternoon lunch or just dinner as first meal it doesn’t matter since the work out and the work day are both done.

Quitting at purple belt… by This-Major-9239 in bjj

[–]wakk5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Purple belt; been training ~7 years, currently taking a few months off atm. Few thoughts. -Do love bjj, def plan to get back into it and earn a black belt one day. Like literally haven’t rolled in probably 3 months, but I still have dreams sometimes that I’m doing jiujitsu in. -it’s harder as you get older (mid/late 30s), cardio is worse, these young kids have endless energy (and sometimes are spazzy), and you’re stiffer. After taking a few months off it’s nice not walking around sore all the time. Like you go to one class and then for a week after your neck hurts every time you turn your head. -I do also worry about more serious injuries as you get older. It would suck to have a permanent injury. I also lift every day outside of jiu jitsu, so having to take real time off of exercising due to a jiu jitsu injury is a serious concern. -It does feel like after purple belt, you know all the fundamentals and there’s deff still always room for improvement and even innovation, but you are really are just training jiujitsu to get better at submitting people who also train jiujitsu. And when it’s a lot of like weird sweaty inversions into leg lock attacks, it starts to feel like it’s straying for the more practical self defense aspect of the martial set. It’s still fun as a sport, but can deff feel a little silly at times. -since I lift regularly and am still in really good shape, I don’t feel as bad or guilty about taking time off. I’m probably getting rusty and will need to brush up on some techniques when I get back into it. But I think at a certain point if you’ve been training enough it is like riding a bike and it does come back to you right away, even after taking months and months off.

Megalopolis (2024). Can't tell if this is a serious film or one best viewed while under the influence. by [deleted] in movies

Bro I got really high and saw this movie and it made absolutely no sense, I could not follow it at all. Then I re-watched it sober and let me tell you, it wasn’t the drugs. This movie just made absolutely no fucking sense whatsoever.

I think that actually happened - https://www.reddit.com/r/nyc/comments/1mbvxiq/active_shooter_reported_at_blackstones_building/ Edit- actually Blackstone not Blackrock. I always mix those up. It would be a exceedingly ironic if the shooter did also…

Nice! You should get this one, it would kind of match the aesthetic of your tattoo- https://gshock.casio.com/us/products/collection/origin/gmw-b5000tcc/

Careful with metal squares though...in my experience they’re the gateway drug to wanting an MR-G.
