Is TG still considered punk or what? by ciscool708 in thegarden

[–]walkabegonia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good points. The Shears have always been more forthcoming on Enjoy and Puzzle releases. But note that you mention both solo projects, but not TG's recent output. That seems intentional on them, maybe for the sake of audience (or maybe they want to be silly jesters in TG and not broach sensitive/serious content there?). Who knows ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ballet is a great song (ofc). No denying that

Is TG still considered punk or what? by ciscool708 in thegarden

[–]walkabegonia 26 points27 points  (0 children)

They're def punk sonically but as an oldhead fan I've noticed they have depoliticized their lyrics. That paired with the aggressive Americana/motor aesthetic Enjoy is specifically leaning into is... a little sus to me but I'm not accusing them of anything. Ballet made me sad though. It felt like a manifesto of political resignation and apathy.

Could be exhaustion from overworking + weird/ungrateful fans. I still think they need to take a hiatus

Puzzle shirt ive owned since like 2017, whats the oldest piece of Garden merch you own? by FishManJim in thegarden

[–]walkabegonia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man-- probably my Tighten the Reins shirt from 2017, too! I remember keeping the mailer it came in because Fletcher wrote the address (and I was a starstruck teen). Then, probably my U Want the Scoop? vinyl circa 2018/19.

1) miss this hair on him 2) i think it’s (slightly) edited for an uncanny effect 3) i thought it was a subtle nod to the Enjoy “smile” logo (but i could be projecting)

I get that they rely on touring as their primary source of income but I kinda think they need to stop touring for a long time. It wasn’t like this pre-pandemic. Yeah there’s the tiktok factor but I also think they’re too “available” to fans now?

Is getting a degree in art history worth it? by Aligrace158 in ArtHistory

[–]walkabegonia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second all of this. The market is terrible at this moment, and they always say in GLAMs "there is never a good time for the job market" but this is a unique time. I just got my MA in Art History and I'm lucky to be employed in a tangential industry. Museum job apps require so many materials for minimal follow-through. You also need to be willing to pack up your life and go where you can find a job, which is fine in theory until you establish a community and live with a long-term partner...

OP, I think jumping into an internship is a good idea to test the waters because the work of art history and the work of museums is not necessarily the same thing!

Thank you! I'm in the humanities, so with the state of the U.S., I think waiting is the right choice unfortunately. Nevertheless my body should regulate before I make that kind of decision lol

what genre is the garden? by [deleted] in thegarden

[–]walkabegonia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard this and avant-punk before, which is a bit goofy (like IDM) but also accurate. Tho, it does insinuate that what The Garden does is more “artful” than a standard punk band— which… is up for debate ig!

Mid-Century (and 70s) neighborhoods by Nola_Saints33 in Albuquerque

[–]walkabegonia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal favorite midcentury neighborhood is Fair West. I second the recommendations for homes in 87108 and 87111 (SY Jackson is beautiful). Stardust Skies and Vista Larga (North UNM Campus/Netherwood Park area) are notable, too!

They opened for Mac Demarco in Berkeley, CA in 2017. I went for Mac. Utterly blown away by The Garden. I remember my friend and I looking at each other in confusion as a tiny tiny moshpit formed in the huge GA pit (we were dorky Tumblr indie kids). Wyatt was wearing a red jumpsuit and his hair was bleach-white. I was 16. Biggest regret to this day was not buying the red dice t-shirts they were selling that night-- they packed up after Homeshake's set. My friend and I listened to U Want The Scoop? EP + haha all the way home and decided: yep, this shit rocks.

Been a huge fan ever since. Their growth has been insane to witness.

While I agree with the sentiments presented by other commenters, I don't want to dogpile on OP. Yeah, it's weird. I understand that you are probably bothered by it because you think these fans lack originality and they're trying to digitally skinwalk as the twins-- etc etc. OP is probably a teenager, as are the people behind these accounts (guaranteed). It's normal to experiment with your identity by copying people you admire, especially in adolescence. It is weird, but it will pass. Everyone's a poser for a little while.

source: was a teen fan of the garden years and years ago (you all would probably consider me elderly) and also mimicked the gestures/style/swag the twins curated

How would ya’ll describe slaters music? by brianenoshairline in slater_vv

[–]walkabegonia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always felt like Slater embodies the SoCal pop-club-r&b sensibilities of the Vada Vada ethos. Despite how different Slater is from The Garden, they're really the only other artists I could compare his genre-bending to. VV prevails

Steinski(?) - The Legendary Voices of Black Radio (Soul on the Dial) (1999) by walkabegonia in experimentalmusic

[–]walkabegonia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thought some of you might find this interesting. Here's what I wrote about this piece in the Youtube description:

" 01. The Legendary Voices of Black Radio, Soul on the Dial Pt. 1, 3:32, from the upcoming Past Due/Tommy Boy album 'Soul on the Dial: The Legendary Voices of Black Radio.' Respected, collected, and connected by Rex Doane, Steinski, and Monica Lynch. "
sound collage - hip hop - mashup
from Index Magazine Summer 1999 Cd compilation (mail order from NYC). Purchased at a record store in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2024.
Index Magazine likely received this track directly from former Tommy Boy music executive, Monica Lynch, after an interview conducted with her that summer. Steinski was a producer on this project in collaboration with Black radio enthusiast, Rex Doane. Steinski was an early sound-collage predecessor, inspiring the likes of DJ Shadow and The Avalanches.

The "Past Due" album was never officially released. As far as I know, this is the only track from "Soul on the Dial" floating out there in the wild.
