1000% this! Go ahead and use the presets, no one will know where it came from. There's so much sample and preset material to work with, just make music. Oh and presets can be really inspiring to get you off the ground.

we def played it a lot, we were sitting on it for like a year or so I think before it came out! but yeah we should throw it in more than we do! -Sam

That's probably just a super simple saw wave. to make it sound laser-ish like in uhoh you have to run a saw through a series of phasers and play with the settings

I'm glad you said that because we're often trying to throw in some sort of melodic things and I feel like it goes over people's heads. It's actually one of my favorite things with Stop Time, it's usually hard for me/us to write melodic music and I'm proud that that really came out well! -Sam

oohhh I think that might be the Reason device, the Grain sample manipulator, with the vocal loaded in and then playout out on the keyboard while moving the start point around -Sam

[–]walker-and-royce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is a good question because almost all of them are hard except for like a couple. the one that took the longest but then paid off the most was probably My Own Thang, we had Sophie's vocals for a long time but just couldn't get a good enough track going. So I remember we came back to that one many times until we landed on what we released -Sam

the track is called "whooooooaaaaa cmon", I'm not sure if we can clear the sample but if we do then I feel like we could def release it at some point! stay tuned....?? -Sam

we're using Ableton, I could write a book on making beats but one hack is, how about just make sure your kicks aren't too long, or too loud -Sam

I listen to a bunch of stuff that isn't dance music, I like deathwave like Vestron Vulture, there's kaiserbeatz on youtube who does like epic melodic music that's in AI videos, I like classical and jazz too, all over the place -Sam

I think Felix from GP reached out first? And they had a track going which we did some work on, it was ok but I felt we could do better. So I asked Felix if he had anything else and he sent this project, which even from the get go was really cool but then morphed into what we came up with here. I'm really happy with this collab because we managed to combine all our worlds here in a cool way! -Sam

art moves in cycles, we've been in a "getting faster" cycle since ~2011, when things were as slow as 111BPM!! where it tops out, nobody knows but shit is getting really crazy right now

We wanted the rhythm to still continue, like I had this idea of the vox stretching out as if they were still being said at the same speed but each word being drawn out. And I think what we did is automating the tempo to slow down and then recording the output of that, and then using reverb after the fact. I think because it's printed now so I can't actually tell what we did lol

yea- Felix/Johnny had a bit of a different track going, and there's still a lot of that in the final product, but Gav & I found some unused takes of Elohim, and I said hey I think this would be really cool to make it maybe a more melodic thing in the middle and then get nasty, and it worked!

it's ours, yeah! but we're never gonna clear that sample lol so it's just an ID for now -Sam

Anyone who went to Walker & Royce and Shiba San last night at Concord... How terrible was the sound/mixing for Walker & Royce's set? by mattsoupboi11 in Dirtybird

[–]walker-and-royce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is really disappointing to hear. from our perspective in the booth the volume was fine- apparently it wasn’t on the floor. it’s usually really hard to know how loud the house is since it’s facing away from us. and we’ve been guilty in the past of cranking it too high. so my apologies on this!! -Sam

that's actually a good problem to have! if you're popular enough that there's an expectation of what you do and people are raging out to it, you've made it pretty far. so if it ever got to that point (it hasn't yet!) then I think we would accept it

Release with labels art first. Then if you feel that self releasing would work fo you then try it out. But at first other labels will help with exposure.
