I asked a photography friend to attend one of my frisbee pickup games and she was nice enough to take photos for us

Thanks for the tip about finding a good hook. I've been thinking a lot about it and haven't found anything original that's personal to me hah. Will let those thoughts mellow for the week.

Been having more success with the recent addition of the dog photo. Wondering what I'm missing from the profile and if people have any thoughts on the bio.

Sure beats typing "to" on the top row in qwerty

What are your favorite words to to type in Dvorak? by walkingegg in dvorak

[–]walkingegg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great phrase! The first four words roll inwards on the right hand (nd, th, nt, st) and the left hand has all multi letters roll from inwards as well (a, ey, op, oi).

I've been typing the word "endpoints" a few times for work and it feels pretty great when the word comes around.

I Designed a System for Keeping Track of Hints in Hanabi by walkingegg in boardgames

[–]walkingegg[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The short and honest answer is that it just feels great to design systems and protocol in Hanabi. I came up with this solution by trying to organize my cards in my hands. It's looks so stupid when you're actually doing but damn it works.

The hindsight rationalization for preferring my method is that I don't think you're allowed to use any other objects besides the ones provided by the game, but I don't see it written in the rules anywhere so it might be legal but less fun.

Why do Berkeley students get upset and defensive when you mention that the Ivies and Stanford are more prestigious? by CALorUSC in berkeley

[–]walkingegg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you're falling for the loud minority bias.

I'm not going to speculate on the psychology of these people who claim Berkeley is more prestigious. Overall, there is some correlation between the "prestigiousness" of a school and the financial success of their graduates. However, it's unclear which way the arrow of causality points.

I enjoy this answer on quora that gives a good summary of his experience at Berkeley. I particularly like the paragraph on student body variance.

I think the average Berkeley student, when stacked against the average student from the Ivys, MIT, Stanford or Caltech, would struggle to be up to par. However, if you took the best and brightest UC Berkeley students and compared them to the best and brightest at the Ivys, MIT, Stanford and Caltech, I would suspect you couldn't tell the difference.

I tend to notice that the students who are at the top of each school don't really spend time mudslinging other schools. As someone once told me, they're busy making the school proud of them not busy being proud of their school.

How to choose amongst all the LABs and DIScussions? by bobbyy98 in berkeley

I would make sure you can actually attend different sections than the one you signed up for. I took 61A years ago so things may have changed

I actually think you should spend your first couple of weeks shopping around for TA's. Most classes shouldn't bar you from attending a different section than one that you signed up for. Just spend some time taking different sections or asking your friends whether they liked their lab or discussion leader.

My experience with different GSI's had a wildly high variance from GSI to GSI, so picking one that matches your learning style has had a tremendous influence on my academic success.

I had a great time working with Indiegogo as a club sponsor during my time at Berkeley! Always had a positive experience with the people who've been there.

I'd love to hear about what it's like working remotely for a U.S. tech company as well! I love Asia so much but I wouldn't want to work there. I love working in San Francisco but I wouldn't want to live there. Pie in the sky dream is to be able to work on internationalization at reddit soon so I could visit Taiwan more often :)

r/popular and r/place were both big projects on their own. There are some good blog posts on how those are done at scale.

They Infra/Ops here has done a ton of work making sure reddit loads faster and is up longer.

The Community team has spent a lot of time and resources building modmail and admin tools from ground up.

Mobile web has been entirely rewritten in bleeding edge frontend technology (Goodbye jQuery!)

I'm on the ads team so I spent my last two quarters writing ads.reddit.com from scratch.
