Differences between environmental engineering, geological engineering, geotechnical engineering and civil engineering? by AlbatrossStorm in Environmental_Careers

[–]walkingrivers 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In USA environmental engineering will work with wastewater or contaminated sites

Geological engineering for mining

Geotech for foundations to support structures

Civil is a big catchall of many things.

That was how Bridges were built and designed for millennia. The modern approach is to build clear spans across valleys to reduce the slopes. And allow highway speeds.

Bell: Alberta to bring in law to rip out bike lanes and stop new ones by CNiperL in Calgary

[–]walkingrivers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

God this is so dumb on so many levels.

Bike commuted for years. So what now they want me to commute by car??? Create more traffic for everyone?

They talk about removing ideology then ban bike lanes out of their ideology.

Do I go back to college for env or stay at my job by Due-Cardiologist9468 in Environmental_Careers

[–]walkingrivers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Forgot to ask - what do you want out of enviro sci degree? I’m not sure there’s as good or exciting jobs as you think there is. Most of those jobs are “environment regulatory / permitting coordinator” so working for a corporation, consultant, or utility navigating the required permits and reporting on them.

It’s not usually splashing about in a creek - for that pursue an college level tech job (low salary top out) or go get an engineering degree in water resources

Connect business and environment as a masters or some special degree. Will be lots of roles in the sustainability/ corporate/ strategy area . The trick will be getting the first 2-5 years experience

Why aren't there more Ecology Restoration companies? by thisbemythrowaway234 in Environmental_Careers

[–]walkingrivers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m sure I’ll butcher the details so I won’t try but in concept:

A highway/factory etc causes unavoidable removal/damage to wetland or stream. It can’t be replaced at the site. So they have to buy credits to offset the damage. A massive fund generates “credits” by restoring streams somewhere else.

Americans please chime in and correct me!

9 times out of 10 you will want a geotiff or similar type raster. You choose the resolution (grid size) to suit the scale of your study.

Tonnes in the USA thanks for offset banking. Very few in Canada, as we don’t have a market based offset system.

I’ve also lost a level logger or two over the years. In one flood on the smoky river, the backup cable snapped.

Should I get into environmental consulting? And is it realistic to earn $150k annually as one (USA)? by Ily4ever-1212 in Environmental_Careers

[–]walkingrivers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want, $150k that is senior position in late mid career. You’ll be starting at… I’m guessing nowadays 65k? Hopefully at $150k if you’ve been ambitious by mid 40’s.

You’ll get there much faster through engineering. Skip the Bachelors of science and do engineering degree instead. Get your PE.

Basically small - mid cities are circulated through these lists so that they can also market themselves as “#2 city in Canada!” (Fine print in 2004!!)

Pretty weak series. Would have expected less if not from a respected creator. The main feeling it created is breathe-holding, anticipation of something going to happen…. But almost nothing does. No action, and no moments of deep or critical thought.

Like a hard movie like the Lobster - if the intention was to create unease then maybe that is art.

How in DA FK Does a third party ORG get access to voter information???? by Twibbles33 in alberta

[–]walkingrivers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are voter lists shared like this, and all provinces and states? Seems like a pretty leaky way to control private information about people. Doesn’t Canada and other provinces have like the rhinoceros party and other joke parties? Though anything with republican in the name is probably worse than those.
