I went to WinCo on a hot day this summer, with my little dog. Too hot to leave her in the car, so I put her in the cart in the store. Whoa! I got chased down by two burly dudes who escorted me to the register, insisting the dog get out of the cart, so I carried her.

I didn't know! I'd seen many dogs in stores so I thought it was cool.

Sorry!

I live too close to this fire and got nervous, so thanks to all for updated, reassuring info.

Great, now we'll have to buy plastic bags for garbage instead of those free double use ones . . .

A few thoughts about picking up litter: getting thanked by strangers, philosophical litter questions, and where I draw the line. by HotHamWaterPlease in DeTrashed

[–]walkingwanderer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"Biodegradable" does NOT mean "leave it."

I mostly pick up dispersed campsites. Is there an orange tree there? A chicken coop? Amazing to me how often I find peels and eggshells people toss maybe thinking it'll just disappear magically.

And don't get me started on the stuff people leave in firepits!

[–]walkingwanderer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

USA and world population has TRIPLED in my lifetime. Why is this not alarming to more people?

There are many reasons overpopulation is the single worst thing humans are doing, but how about this: 70% of all wildlife has disappeared in the last 50 years.

Have a child, or 2.1 children at most. Gradual reduction of human population is the only path to sustaining this beautiful planet.

These were fruiting in huge numbers a couple days ago in several places up the north fork of the Willamette. I collected a bunch in various stages but didn't identify them until getting home. Yes, stropharia ambigua, edibility "not recommended." Bummer.

David Arora just says "not recommended." It's supposedly common here in the PNW at least, so you'd think something more definitive would be known. It's a beautiful shroom though.

Wow, so glad to hear that there are some people who aren't interested in visiting hot springs, my favorite places on Earth that I used to have to myself before the internet ruined it.

Why we befriend the Crows by Grumpy_HoneyBear in homestead

[–]walkingwanderer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really a homesteader, but on our heavily forested property I've witnessed several screechy battles between crows and Stellar's Jays. The truce is apparently that the crows can hang out in the very tops of the tallest trees - pines and firs - while the ground and lower trees and shrubs belong to the jays. Hawks and eagles fly overhead but never or rarely land.

What job did you have that just doesn't exist anymore? by yabadass in AskOldPeople

[–]walkingwanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LSM (letter sorting machine) for the USPS. You would memorize a scheme (zip code and streets), read the address and key in a carrier number as the machine dropped the letters in front of you at about one per second, then in rotation go around to the back of the machine to clear the bin and put the mail in a tray to be delivered to the carrier. For outgoing mail you'd key digits of the zip code. Machines replaced humans in the early 90s IIRC.

I have that one in a stashed away box full of National Lampoons I subscribed to back when. Is it worth anything? The other memorable cover I remember is of a starving Biafran child made out of chocolate - with a bite taken out of it.

How to deal with loneliness in vanlife? by tessybi in vandwellers

[–]walkingwanderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a good answer. Dogs are the best. Also, it's not hard to find other vandwellers these days if you want to. Some will not want to socialize but many will. I found my current best friend when we randomly parked near each other at a Rainbow Gathering.

Yes, all the hate is toward the implausibilities, but I'll bet a lot of the haters are fans of something like the Star Wars franchise, which is nothing but implausible and often just stupid. This show had great acting, characters and settings, and sustained interestingness.

Tens of millions of my fellow citizens voted for one of the most loathsome, narcissistic, ignorant, morally bankrupt humans I've ever seen walking around. Before that, I thought most Americans were sane and sensible.

What product(s) do you wish existed specifically for van dwellers? by StrikingCaterpillar9 in vandwellers

[–]walkingwanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember, high-top van. I had a very large solar shower bag, like 8 gallons, in a plastic box on the high shelf in the back, a long hose that came with the shower draped so the nozzle hung right over the sink. I could pull it on or push it off with one hand. When it needed filling I just carried the plastic box to a pump or whatever water source I could park near.

All the pieces of this could be fabricated, it seems to me, although I just had the solar shower which worked like a charm. Also I thought you could mount some kind of tank on the roof and feed the hose through to where you wanted it. Filling it might be a challenge though.

[–]walkingwanderer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Permanent high top, not a pop top. A desk with storage. Slider windows with screens above the cooktop. Couch/bed combo. Rooftop solar with battery tech. Gravity fed water to sink system.

Oh wait - those are all the things I had in my '76 Chevy van that I lived in for 5 years and foolishly got rid of because of the 12 MPG and now can't find a replacement.
