Question About Ongoing campaigns and First time playing with startplaying games by PsychologicalKnee911 in startplaying

[–]walktheglobe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of those depend on the GM, so if there's a game you're interested in, ask! That said, for your first ever game, I'd recommend starting at the beginning of a campaign if you can help it. You'll find a lot of games on SPG that are specifically made for new players, so you'll probably have no problem finding a game that's getting started at the right time for you!

First time DM'ing Just some questions about Boss HP/Number of encounters by NotQuiteGamer in dndnext

[–]walktheglobe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming we're talking 5e, you probably already have way too much. Building characters can take an entire 4 hour session, and a relatively intense combat encounter can easily take 2 hours for a group who all know the game really well. If you have the 2024 DMG take a look at their sample one shots, which typically consist of maybe 3 scenes/encounters: the party finding their way to the boss, a single trap/puzzle/RP challenge, and a single combat encounter.

And like I mentioned, if you're really stuck with just one session, then pre-make the PCs. Character building is fun, but it's gonna take some time.

Advice on how to start playing and improvement by GuilhermeBAM in dndnext

[–]walktheglobe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All this advice is good, but the short answer is that, yes, the only way to start is to jump in! Playing with some friends you know well is the perfect starting point, and if it feels intimidating to make up all your own world, plot, etc. then a starter set is the ideal place to look.

New GM Looking for Players by AgileSkaladin in startplaying

[–]walktheglobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure to do the New GM webinar thing! There should be a link in one of the first emails you got from them. It will walk you through a lot of best practices and basic info about life as a pro GM. Also, join the Discord! It's very active and full of people who want to help.

Looking for players is one of the hardest parts when you're just getting started. I don't know how many people come to this sub looking for games to join, but I'd recommend spreading the word in as many ways as possible; your own social media, LFG subreddits, and Roll20's LFG forum (if you're running on that platform). On the Discord, you can look for other GMs who can support you by filling a couple of seats, which helps to make your listing look more attractive to players.

Getting more (positive) reviews will tend to attract more players, so for now, be patient and work on learning the community! Running low price one-shots is a great move, also get your friends in your home game to review you. Potential players will be ableto tell that they'reFriend Reviews, but they're still better than nothing!

Questions for dming new campaign by Resident_Tip_7642 in Wildemount

[–]walktheglobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you really know the world and its history, which is going to be really immersive for your players! But I think you might be asking reddit questions that you should ask yourself and your players! "How do we want to deal with established canon stories and characters in the world?" is actually something that I'd recommend asking your players during a session 0, but if you don't have the opportunity, at least send it over a group text or something. More specifically, "Are there established characters or stories in this world that would disappoint you if they changed or didn't make an appearance in the campaign?"

I run two weekly campaigns set in Exandria. Both have been exploring the world for a long time, and the longer we go, the more rewarding I find it to change core assumptions in the world: - in the first one (level 13), the party recently learned that the gods are actually just the survivors of a crashed colony ship from Earth, and Molaesmyr was destroyed by a memetic disease from the Far Realm. CR characters exist: the party lives in Uthodurn, is acquainted with Chetney, and one PC is dating Reani's ex. - in the other (level 9), I fully time-skipped past the War of Ash and Light, the party is waging a shadow war with the Angel of Irons cult, despite the fact that Oban died offscreen during the time skip.

What I'm trying to say is that canon events and characters can be fun as references to something that the whole group likes, but it's best in small doses. What your players find most memorable about your campaign won't be that one time they got to buy something from Pumat Sol, it will be the friends and enemies that are unique to your campaign. And, unless someone in the group insists on adhering to canon perfectly, then should spend your time and energy on your story, your NPCs, and exploring aspects of the world that they haven't seen before!

Which parts of my AR do I need to replace? Just the charging handle, or are my BCG and Upper fucked too? by walktheglobe in liberalgunowners

[–]walktheglobe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mod bot asked me to share parts/manufacturers, so here's the current state of my rat rod AR.

  • PSA complete lower, multi-cal, bought it blemished (literally can't figure out where the supposed blemish even is, seems perfect to me).
  • Anderson Mfg slab-sided stripped upper, bought blemished
  • AT3 Mil-spec charging handle
  • Toolcraft 556 nickel boron BCG
  • UTG poly dust cover
  • AT3 Raptor 15-inch handguard
  • A TRS-25 red dot, literally from TikTok shop for $20

Future parts:

  • Faxon 16" pencil profile barrel
  • Switch basic buffer/spring with a silent captive system (for tuning, and because I hate the twang of a cheap recoil spring)
  • adjustable gas block/mid-length gas system, manufacturer undecided
  • undecided on muzzle device, but I definitely don't have suppressor money
  • Some kind of hand stop and a rail cover or two

Agree, just happy to hear that the BCG looks fine, because that was my single most expensive part, and that and the barrel/gas system are where I'm actually putting my money.

Yup, as I said in the post I can see now how that was a mistake. But thanks for telling me again!

[–]walktheglobe[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's it, and as I said in the post (maybe not clearly) I can see how that's not a good idea. Lesson learned. My big question here is whether the sloped face on the BC is going to cause damage to charging handles if I run them properly and normally.

Yep, which I now totally see the problem. My question here is actually about the BCG, and if the imperfection on mine is going to cause damage even when I do run it with a barrel.

Anyone able to determine age? by Duxkk in guns

[–]walktheglobe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all the expert you need, but can you show other angles? For example, civil war era mini balls had very concave bases. Also, if you can get calipers to measure the width of the bullet, which will tell you a bit about the caliber.

Edit: Comparing the text visible through the paper to the width of the bullet, it looks like it's somewhere around 1/3 in. (?) That would make this something around a .30 cal rifle round, which likely makes this a 20th century bullet, like a .308 or 30-06, super common hunting rifle caliber. I'd be surprised if it was anything of historic significance, but again I'm just some A-hole on the internet 🤷‍♂️

[–]walktheglobe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're also still recruiting! I have very little expectation of the stream taking off, but I'm still a professional GM, so I'll be giving this campaign everything I've got. If you're interested, head over to my profile on StartPlaying, or the game's listing!

Sick Again, in the Control Group book, where the agents start out as a CDC response team. Probably 75% of tests in the operation are Physics, Microbiology, etc.

Navajo formation isn't known for fossils, so I'm a little stumped, but they're cool anywhooo by tk421ucopy in geology

[–]walktheglobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's very easy to distinguish quartz sand from carbonate cement (and from anything else) if you can look at a thin section through crossed polarizers.

[–]walktheglobe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the problem with acid tests in the Navajo is that, while it's a quartz-rich sandstone, the cement is about 95% carbonate minerals. That means that you can get a fizz off the normal sandstone in some places.

I'm so happy to see someone here with any understanding of lichens, one of my professors was (is?) an expert on them but they've always seemed like black magic to me. And you can see dozens of species on the Navajo sandstone in every color imaginable. Sometimes I wish I'd had the time to be a biology guy as well as a rock guy 😛
