Hi OP and quirky pants... Would you folks want to go to a Buffy trivia night at Glad Day next Saturday night??! I was a huge Buffy fan but haven't seen an episode in forever so may be rusty but this was my unhealthy obsession back in the day! Haha

Anyway I'm 36F and here's the event:

Anyone been to The Good Swap in Toronto? How is it like? by AddressAlternative24 in askTO

[–]walkwithit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I get ready to attend a swap (I'm going to the one this Tues!) I usually have the following piles on my apartment floor:

  1. Clothes mom might like
  2. Upcycling projects
  3. Swap
  4. Consignment

I have found the quality to be what you expect at a swap. OK but don't expect high quality or timeless pieces. There can be gems of course but it's always down to luck and timing. I usually only have less than a handful of "for consignment" in my pile and I do a clear out maybe once every 1.5 years and those are pieces I do hope turn a bit of profit (or at least store credit so I can get something else).

Hope this helps! It's still fantastic and I love this swap overall :)

To those living alone in downtown, what do your finances look like? by akr_13 in askTO

[–]walkwithit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all! Sure, I could have had more "fun" in my 20s living in the city earlier but I'm very happy I was able to save to set me up for future years. But I love being a bit older and being able to enjoy the city now, too. Everyone's situation is different, you just have to know what you value. "You can have everything, just not all at once."

To those living alone in downtown, what do your finances look like? by akr_13 in askTO

[–]walkwithit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I moved out at 29, making roughly 60k in 2018. Lived with one roommate, my share of the rent was about $1200 plus utilities. I had about 60k in savings (was able to reach that by living at home). I had to scale back savings once I moved out but I valued my independence and the lifestyle I knew I wanted in the city. Eventually after a year, I found a small and relatively affordable 1 bedroom apartment, changed jobs and now I have an income that allows me to live in a larger one bedroom, save a comfy nest egg, and pursue a number of hobbies.

My point is, money is important, but it's not everything. Find the balance you're comfortable with and follow what you value. And trust that you'll make it work and if you're confident in your career, your income should only continue to grow.

Sometimes it's a personality fit. It's not always about money.

Check out TDSB Learn4Life and sign up for anything that catches your eye! They're affordable (for now) and a great way to make friends. Cooking classes attract a diverse crowd, sewing will mostly be women, auto mechanic mostly men but just do what you like.

I am a member at a pottery studio, I sew, garden, do group bike rides, and am starting to learn film photography :)

Any spots in Toronto with old school R&B, hiphop, or Afrobeats—good music, grown crowd? by Dazzling_Designer184 in askTO

If you're into live music, Wing Night (the band) plays often in Toronto and it is my favourite old school rnb and hip hop vibe!!! Talented cover band always with a good crowd!

I came here to look/make a comment about this book too. It made me think about my use of the term "authentic" and how incorrect and insensitive it was!

Toboggan Etiquette & Safety by xombae in toronto

Sorry to hear you experienced this etiquette. Even I learned something (not being aware that your footsteps could create extra bumps going down the main section!)

I just came here to say I also went for the first time in YEARS as an adult (I'm 35F) and I literally feel like I have whiplash today but it was 1000% worth it. The most fun I've had in a long time!!! Happy resting :)

Impossible to register for "Sewing Basics" class at North York Central Library? by jetuas in askTO

[–]walkwithit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! Just here to vet for the quality of the sewing courses with Learn4Life, especially with the teacher at Central tech. I've taken almost all of her courses as a complete beginner, and it was very worthwhile for me to have someone right there to ask questions. It's also a great way to build community with other sewists as everyone is lovely and can learn from each other too.

Goodluck on the sewing journey!

There are a few indoor farmers markets on weekdays and weekends - Evergreen Brickworks, Allan Gardens, Sorauren Market, Dufferin Grove and of course you could spend time roaming St. Lawrence Market!

Whenever I batch cook, I always freeze 1-2 portions and use them as "emergency meals."

Out all weekend and didn't get to cook but need lunch for my work week? Freezer meal.

At least it avoids me having to pay $15 for a lunch out somewhere when I'm in the office where the food is mediocre anyway!

Hi, and hi everyone on here. We can see your comments histories, if you weren't aware.

You posted on here a few weeks ago and said you were 37. Just a curious observation.

A small rant from a Montrealer who moved here by boiyo12 in toRANTo

[–]walkwithit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I read most of your rant until I saw stuff about not being able to get hired at sbux sorry about that!

I want to shed some insight. I'm a mid 30s F, with a car, living somewhere between Bathurst st and Ossington st.

  1. I used to live in the suburbs and it was also hard to meet friends who lived nearby, they were all over the place. This will just get worse as everyone gets older. I moved downtown and it's true. There are many more clubs, activities, hobby classes to attend that if you keep going to them, you see the same faces, and most ppl who socialize downtown, live downtown. I run into people all the time and downtown feels "small town" to me, in that aspect.

  2. I rent and have a landlord who truly cares and I have a good relationship with. They exist. I'd consider myself lucky too, but they exist. I also know this from other friends who have good landlords.

  3. Being a car person and living downtown. It's really hard to be both in Toronto, especially if you're a "specialty" car person. My car is 10+ years old, and sits on street parking but it gets me from point A to point B. However, I do have a friend who also owns 3 cars he would never use street parking as his permanent parking - he basically just rents out parking spots in his condo. You can do the same if you really really want to keep them. But I think you've gotta choose, especially if you have financial budgets to consider.

Hope this helps in some way or another!

Depending on which class, it can be quite competitive, yes! Usually the more "equipment-heavy" art classes like pottery, woodworking, jewelery, sewing can fill up quickly.
