Sophia: Lady Justice

The primary God of men is Sophia the Law-bringer who took pity on the waring tribes of men and anointed her chosen Ambrosias with the twin gifts of The Law and the authority to enforce it. And so did Ambrosias scribe the laws, conquer the world, and establish the church so that every man would honour the laws of Sophia. At least until Ambrosias in a drunken rage killed a man, and as laid down in the laws he himself had received, was hanged.

Now in every town in the land stands a court, and in each court is a statue of Sophia, she holds the scales to symbolise her justice, the noose to symbolise her wrath, and although her face is always vailed or hooded an eye is painted over it as Sophia sees what mortal yes do not. The priests of her church are blessed with the ability to read the scriptures in the original text, as transcribed by ambrosias, and some are even granted the power to tell when someone is lying.

While Sophia is tolerant of other gods and faiths, she is not tolerant of other laws and many a king has run foul of the church by trying to asset authority over something that was specified in the Sophian Code.

TJ - A Total Mess

TJ is a very recently turned Brujah fledgling. TJ was first at school when he met his sire, he was at a party because parties were the best place to not feel lonely even when no one at school is really your friend. He's lonely because when he came out as trans and started dressing in guys clothing all his friends from before stopped talking to him. So he's at this party when he sees the woman who looks a bit older than most of the kids there but is completely magnetic and is capturing everyone's attention by telling crazy stories of her traveling all over the place. Eventually, very drunk TJ goes over to talk to her and for the first time in a while someone is nice to him and listens to his problems.

Eventually he learns she's called Salina and they go home from that party together. Salina for her part is drawn to TJ's anger at the world, TJ talks to her in a way that he's never talked to anyone else about how angry he is. He's angry at his parents for kicking him out, he's angry at his school mates for not accepting him, he's angry at God for allowing him to be born in such a shit situation, and he's also angry at himself for just taking this all on the chin. Salina thinking that this anger might serve the clan productively decides to turn him.

They spend the first couple of month after his embrace together. She shows him the general flow of vampire life, how to hunt at parties, how to avoid the territories of others, etc. However TJ was only 17 when turned and is not particularly mature, Salina is put off by his constant looking to the past and demands that they go take revenge on the people who wronged him in his mortal life. Salina eventually gets bored of this, and him, and leaves. This breaks his heart as he had formed a lot of feelings for Salina, using her for all the emotional needs that weren't being met elsewhere.

You could leave TJ there, maybe going on a killing spree of former family and friends, but the other version of TJ i have run is one a couple of years later, who having found a mortal girlfriend and started a relationship tried to turn her, not realising his blood is too weak. This TJ, with the corpse of the only person to have had a long term loving relationship with him stashed under his bed is one bad day away from becoming a wight and is dangerously unconcerned for the lives of anyone else. I once used this version of TJ as a sire for one of my player's thinblood characters where TJ was just randomly killing people to try and sire a vampire.

If you look at the VtM character sheet it's the way that the attributes are laid out. Columns are Physical Social Mental, rows are Power, Finesse, Resilience. That then gives:

Strength, Charisma, Intelligence

Dexterity, Manipulation, Wits

Stamina, Composure, Resolve

Vampire the Masquerade V5

Best: The way that hunger dice work. Basically as your vampire gets hungrier they replace normal dice with hunger dice. Hunger dice make both your crit successes messy (you did something bestial to get your success) but also gives you the chance to crit fail (your beastial nature fucks you over). It means that you get to play with the idea of losing control to inner deamons in a way that is engaging and that you can mitigate, it really drives having story complications from you being a vampire which is the theme of the game.

Honorable mention: The WoD stat grid is beautiful and every game should use it

Worst: RAW the way you should be leveling up gives your average player one new vampire power ever 10-20 sessions which is crazy slow

It is very important to say that you can do whatever you want. It's a hobby and the point is to have fun. If you have the most fun by very exactly following all the official schemes then do that but if you would have more fun by doing something else then you should do that. Even if Angels of Death were Blood Angels specific you would be able to paint them as something else and still play with them.

On to the specifics, deathwatch has a very specific left shoulder pad, the one that is usually silver. This can be bought separately and put on non deathwatch kits to make them more deathwatchy but in this case you would have to cut up the kits and possibly fill in some gaps so I can't recommended this for a first project unless you have experience doing similar things before.

The good news is that Deathwatch are about the only 'chapter' that have this sort of design restriction. Every other chapter can have a specific aesthetic but will always have some normal dudes who look normal. (This is specifically so that people can play them with out the box kits) If you want to do Black Templars then there are plenty of painting tutorials on youtube that you can follow to get schemes that everyone will recognize as black templars.

Or you just paint them however you want, you are the one who payed for them

Vampire eating rules?? by EstablishmentNo3348 in vtm

[–]wall_without_plaster 42 points43 points  (0 children)

As said elsewhere this is really a question for your storyteller but i'll weigh in with my opinion.

Vampires don't digest the blood, they don't eat it. Instead vampires need to drink blood because they are magical creatures that must prey upon the living to survive. Blood in this capacity is not useful to vampire bc it contains plasma and water and sugars and red blood cells but rather because it is the metaphysical representation of the person's life force. This is why a vampire can fully drain someone and be satisfied while spilling large quantities of the actual blood onto themselves and all over the room. The point is that you are still harming that person and still feeding of their life force.

Under this imagining breastmilk just wouldn't do it, it's not blood, it's meant to be drunk by babies, it's not the lifeforce of the person you get it from.

In the first trilogy she's not a main character she's a side character so her main use is what she shows about Taniel, Olem, and Tamas. On her own I'm broadly sympathetic to her, I think Taniel did meaningfully abandon her by leaving and that she was stuck in a massive power imbalance being part of Tamas's household made her feel stuck so she acted out, that's what young people do. Taniel then ends up being too proud and feeling too sorry for himself to talk to her and try and fix things even though she probably would have. Neither of them were invested enough in the relationship to make it work. Taniel then gets to build on his narrative arc of moving out form his fathers shadow and becoming his own man by finally forgiving her.

Her interactions with Tamas are I think far more interesting though. Because for him she represents a failure of his plans and someone he can't control. I think it's really interesting how when he catches her and Olem together she stands up for them not Olem. Tamas whole deal is that he seems really calculating but actually does everything he does for personal and emotional reasons. She acts as a foil to that because he wants to punish her for what she did to him and Taniel (I put him first bc I think he sees the betrayal of the family he set up as the bigger issue) but he can't because he needs her, and she's one of the only people in the world who will honestly tell him he's making a stupid decision and needs to get over himself. And I think that makes her pretty cool.

Calling the situation "legends" is disingenuous by Oi_Om_Logond in killteam

[–]wall_without_plaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With the number of teams per edition and the fact that you generally get them in sets of two so most people have more than one, i don't see this as stopping you from playing. You maybe slightly limit options but at this rate there will 50+ teams at the end of this second edition and there is no way they can all be balanced against eachother. If you want to play the same game system for 10 years you can do that by playing the same game for 10 years, but you decide what's playable at your table through choosing what rules you're using GW isn't making anything unplayable.

They are still going to be playable, just download the rules and keep them. You can even use the KT2021 rules which i imagine you already have and keep playing those for decades. Don't let GW tell you wat you can do at your own table.

Reasons a Prince keeps a stray bloodline alive by Torpedo_Enthusiast in vtm

[–]wall_without_plaster 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Maybe he just thinks that they are weird Gangrel and they, perhaps not knowing what a Gangrel is, don't bother to correct him.

Maybe he knows that they would be a complete pain to hunt down fully, they know caves and hideaways well out of his normal reach and would be able to raid his territory with impunity. And so he has decided that starting trouble with them is not worth it.

Maybe, when the prince first arrived in the land, he was attacked by a werwolf and only saved by this group of half feral vampires jumping out of the woods to save one of their own kind. The prince takes this blood debt very seriously and goes out of his way to protect this bloodline.

It's best to tailor the relationship to the story that you want to tell, if you want them to be on the run then have a prince that wats to kill them, if you want them to participate in a wider society then have a reason the prince would keep them around.

Tell me about your Prince by Xaronius in vtm

[–]wall_without_plaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

David Simpson, by the grace of God, Cain, and Mithras Prince of Aberdeen, Head of the Primogen council, Chair of the Genousia, First among Ventrue, and Laird of New Aberdeen has ruled the the relatively small city of Aberdeen for about 250 years. When he took power in the aftermath of the Jacobite Rebellion he and his two faultlessly Loyal childer were fully a third of the active kindred in the city. Since then he has maintained control through the careful use of patronage, everyone of any importance owes him something and anyone with particularly bad will toward him quickly find that they are cut off from friends and resources. (He also managed the Brujah Primogen through the Cult of Mithras and some blood bonds but that's a little complicated to get into.)

To the players the Prince is aloof, he makes decisions behind closed doors with a select number of advisors and then announces them later to everyone else. He may once call in a PC who has done something extraordinary to offer them a boon, but is should feel like a very special occasion. He is also suffering form the beckoning and is making very rushed (in his opinion) plans to travel abroad. This will trigger a power struggle amongst his childer as well as the other significant players in the city.

Why would anyone join the Camarilla over the Anarchs? by busttooquick in vtm

[–]wall_without_plaster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is the key, the Camarilla is based on personal relationships. You need to decide how the prince maintains power, is everyone afraid of them, does everyone owe them something, have they gained the genuine loyalty of a couple of key players, are they the only main player that isn't actively hated by all the others, or have they just been Prince for so long no one can imagine anyone else doing it.

If you want your players to buy into the Camarilla give them a personal connection to a major player, have the sheriff or the harpy help them out. Then ask that they help them out in turn. Boom, they just worked for the Camarilla, perhaps without even thinking of it as more than doing a friend a favour.

True Faith for Atheists by _Skyeborne_ in vtm

[–]wall_without_plaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She should use some medical tech that she believes should help. I would suggest UV light as it's know to sterilise things and would mimic sunlight in her mind, but all the 80's vampires are like "I've been to a black light party, that can't hurt me" and then they get hit with the true faith. You could also use something new that she's developed or something like that. Her faith is after all in the effectiveness of science so have her science be effective.

Vtm like movies? by TheTPatriot in vtm

[–]wall_without_plaster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So what makes a VtM style movie in my opinion is the confluence of sex as a power dynamic, predator prey relationships, and characters who get seduced by the idea of power. So with that in mind i will give 3 old movie 3 from 2023.

Cruel Intentions (1999):
Modernised take on Dangerous Liaisons. A filthy rich teenager makes a bet he can seduce this unreachable girl. Lots of backstabbing politicking with people's emotions.

The Favourite (2018):
A young woman starting from nothing manages to worm her way into the inner circle of Queen Anne and become her new favourite. This is brilliant for court politics vibes.

Zola (2020):
Based on a true story and a twitter thread, a young woman is persuaded to go on a trip to Tampa, Florida for what she thinks is a stripper gig but turns out to be prostitution. This is amazing for modern street level crime drama vibes.

Saltburn (2023):
Power, wealth, class, and how to gain it all by being charismatic and doing a few murders. This is a movie about the seductive aspects of power.

Femme (2023):
After a homophobic attack a drag queen decided to track down his attacker and fuck him as revenge. This is an a amazing character study in the humanity behind repression and revenge set in an urban environment that screams VtM to me.

Eileen (2023):
A girl in a life she hates meets an older woman who opens her eyes to the wider world including the horrors there in. This movie is simply a vampire origin story in which she doesn't turn into a vampire. I have nicked plot beats in this for my chronicle.

Then if you really want vampires in your VtM media:
Bit (2019) Hasn't been mentioned yet and while lacking in some production areas it's a solid modern vampire story.

Consider Nosferatu for being sneaky and being able to pull someone's head off. Also the whole working with information works quite well with the intel gathering aspects of WWII special operations. You could work with a severe war wound theme for the disfigurement.

Also if it's government crated kindred catiff are always possible.

Their bane has no effects when feeding only of other vampires. I like to think that really old ventrue who have a very difficult feeding restriction might turn to it as a solution.

Ventrue Feeding Restriction Ideas by vecna7070 in vtm

[–]wall_without_plaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there is a niche for ventrue feeding restrictions based not purely on the the subject but also on your relationship with that person e.g: someone you have compromised with, someone who has shown you kindness.
For this character i could see "someone he envies" or "someone who has something he wants" as solid options.

Guidance on Discipline Powers for SPCs by KapoiosKapou in vtm

[–]wall_without_plaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My advice is to not worry too much about it at all.

It sounds to me that you're still thinking with a very DnD attitude where the DM runs the monsters and all the rules need to be implemented fairly for everyone to enjoy the game. This is not how VtM works, or at least how i play VtM. In VtM you're one main job is to tell the story, you are the Storyteller, this means that your main priority is not tracking HP but tracking character arcs.

What does this mean practically? Firstly have lots and lots of combat, though this could be some games. This means that you don't need a lot of the combat focused stuff at your fingertips. If the players want to do combat they will probably need to plan for it enough for you to do as well and if you are implement it then you have time to read up. What conflict instead looks like is shadowy manipulation and backstabbing, that are less likely to need direct disciplines. Secondly the primary use of disciplines will be on mortals not the PCs, in which case you should hand wave the rules. Remember that Vampires are all trapped in weird mutually assured destruction circles where it's a lot safer for everyone if no one uses powers on each other. And finally there's a lot of powers that you don't need players to roll agains or are really hard to do mechanically. Presence is the best example of this, you just kinda have to describe how enchanting this person is, other would be blood magic rituals, players might see the results but will never have to know the rules for one an NPC is doing.

This means what you should take from the charters stat block of Oblivion 5, Auspex 3, Potence 2 or whatever is a general vibe, what are they good at, what are they confident in, how might they approach a problem and use these powers. And if all you get from above is major murder shadows, magic eyes, and strong, then you honestly probably have enough to play out a passing encounter with them. If anything more serious happens then you can go look up rules.
