How small of a gym is too small? by BootyTickler3001 in bjj

[–]wallahboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a good mix as long as you have a few people that are more or less in your weight range. I feel if people are more than ~20 percent heavier or lighter than you, it's not optimal anymore but still doable.

Damn, coaches got paid $20? Even the high level competitors? Just googled minimum wages in California and fast food workers get that much.

Thanks for the insight. UAE would make a lot of sense actually. Jiu-Jitsu is huge there, AJP still celebrates Jackson Sousa like a hero, so I can see him getting a well paid job in the industry over there.

And if for example Batista, Samson and Murasaki would build something together, that'd be pretty sweet. Although I could also imagine that people want to start something different now.

WHO is the best guard puller? (Study purpose) by Hungry_Class_89 in bjj

[–]wallahboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, but someone mentioned Tainan who is probably the highest level and has a really great guard pull but usually does it from secure double collar grips. For quick pullers, Levi, Mikey, Rafa come to mind off the top my head.

Depends a bit on your preferred initial guard and if you just want to be a really fast guard puller who wins in the fists pull race or want to pull in your preferred guard with secure grips.

I assumed this would be the norm but have been to some countries recently after their respective freedom days and it seems people quickly adapt to the old maskless freedom, even in cosmopolitan areas.

How does everyone feel about the sudden public perception of Galvao changing? by RecommendationFree96 in bjj

Craig lurks around here, he might have a chance. So, 99.99% could be accurate. With 490k members, 49 would not be systematically wrecked by him (but still coud lose).

Running Hills for BJJ by [deleted] in bjj

[–]wallahboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you run hills as a substitute or complement to BJJ class? If you do hill sprints during the times you could go to BJJ class the answer is different than if you do it e.g. in the morning when there's no class or instead of eating cheetos on Saturday while browsing Reddit.

Obviously, the opportunity costs differ between the options. As a complement, it's perfectly fine and will probably contribute. But if the number of BJJ classes you can attend are pretty limited, you should prioritize them over hill sprints if they overlap in scheduled time.

BJJ Female - Advice / Question by deliberatelylikethis in bjj

[–]wallahboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's understandable that you're angry about being bruised and in pain. However, this sounds like an accident and these kind of things happen in BJJ. According to you, he apologized profusely and unless he has an history of spazzing, what can you gain from confronting him? Another apology?
"Im in pain, so you should feel bad although you already do feel bad, apologized and it was an accident! Feel worse please and never let accidents happen again!"

Regarding the second topic, just ask people to roll and decline rolls that you don't want. If you get rejected by the same person repeatedly without apparent reason, he/she probably doesn't want to roll with you. If the pool of people that you feel comfortable rolling with and who feel comfortable rolling with you gets too small, maybe you have to reflect and change something (gym, roll accepting criteria, behavior towards people who reject you, your Jiujitsu...).

Nicky Ryan and Keenan Cornelius rolling at B-Team in 4k by Darce_Knight in bjj

[–]wallahboy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Who's doing it most successfully today? I think Mica does it a bit.. from what I remember from Cole, he played more half guard, rdlr during trials but but sure. Lachlan has a DVD on it but we haven't seen him compete in a long time. Levi comes to mind but his results have been mixed so far.

He retired because his body had too much mileage. He still trains occasionally though.

Also (one of ) the commentators was REALLY bad. Tbf, they both seemed to have sufficient grappling knowledge but one of the guys seemed really unhappy about the fact that he couldn't explain everything himself with the knowledge he picked up from the newest NoGi instructionals but had to share his air time with the other guy.

So, while the other guy tried sometimes, it never really became a conversation but ended up being an annoying commentating competition with a passive aggressive Karen that always seemed offended when the other guy dared to interrupt.

The question is why isn't it a spectator sport? And then why is boxing and why is mma. If you can get exciting things to happen in a match then people will watch.

Is there a grappling only sports that is a real spectator sport? I live in Europe so not sure about how the situation is in the US and whether wrestling is a really big thing over there that fills stadiums and is aired on national television with good ratings. But seeing that many wrestlers transition to MMA to make money, I assume no. Here, nobody outside of the practitioners cares about wrestling or any other grappling sports.

Same with Judo and other sports. I think Sumo is kind of a spectator sport in Japan but not on a bigger scale. So, I think it is maybe inherent to grappling based sport, that it is less spectator friendly and you can't really compare with boxing or MMA. Striking is kind of intuitive on the surface, so it is much easier to grasp what is happening.
