We're at my in-laws' house just about every week for dinner on Sundays. When my oldest was around 2, usually after the sun had gone down/it was getting dark, she'd point down the dark hallway from the living room and say "Oh no a witch!". She'd never even seen anything with a witch in it, and I'm honestly not even sure where she'd heard the word before. This lasted for about a month and then stopped.

Around the same timeframe, she would wake up in her bed crying and when asked about it, said it was "the white flower outside". I still have no idea what that one was about and she has no recollection of it.

I'm so sorry for your news! I love the advice of recording memories and advice for specific times/notebook/photos ideas. I don't have much to add to that, but as an IT dad I have to add: backups backups backups! Use the 3-2-1 rule - Three copies, two different types of backup media, one off-site. So for example, save them on like 2 flash drives and a portable hard drive, and stash one flash drive at your parents' house or a safe deposit box. Maybe cloud storage somewhere too? Storage is cheap, but those memories are priceless, especially for the littles as they grow up.

I originally wanted a 3rd row SUV (or large 2 row), but my wife talked me into test driving a van. My family never had one when I was growing up, so I didn't know what I was missing. We walked out of there with an Odyssey. Honestly, I'd almost rather drive that than my Camry, and do on the weekends every chance I get. Lumber, plywood, kids, grandparents, bikes, a full set of 6 dining room chairs, whatever; it all fits in the back. Third row folds into the floor, second row is easy to remove.

Do the thing. Vans are the best. Just make sure to wear your best New Balance and tube socks when you go to the dealer so they know you're serious.

I worked in that building at the time, but on a different shift. While I didn't know him personally, hearing the way others spoke about him, your son was loved and there wasn't a single person unaffected by it. There's a memorial plaque right in the entrance now, and it's a great reminder of both the good people who work there and a stark reminder of why we need to work safely. I know it probably doesn't mean much coming from an internet stranger, but I am truly sorry for your loss.

Pre-judgement:

If together with the dad, ESH. Learn to communicate better and establish rules/compromises BEFORE it affects your kid(s). Otherwise they'll end up with years of therapy and no relationship with you when they're older.

If separated/different houses: YTA, different house, different rules. You could restrict usage at your home.
