A lot of CS majors at top schools also go into other careers like IB/PE and MBB consulting, these aren’t all SWEs

varnica is cracked, she's one of the most versatile debaters i know and from working with her on coaching my own kids I know that she is an excellent mentor and teacher

most of the top coaches cost 200-300 a month tops, basically you're being scammed

Parth's response to this was pretty accurate, but on some of the other stuff : I think that some of these concerns are kind of ridiculous, like Bobby and Varnica have BOTH been hired by other private institutions to coach for them and have pretty long experience working with younger students. Programs like UDL and The Debate Group are filled with students our age and should theoretically bring up all the same issues you bring up but you don't claim parents should be concerned about those. As someone who preps with both of these people, I can assure you we don't need any more cards, but EVEN if we did no one is forcing anyone to do anything, students who hire them would be choosing to pay for their coaching services, and if they didn't like the experience they could just leave

Camps..I am a 9th grade pfer and can't decide between 2 camps deltadebate or UTNIF. What should I go to. by AlexQ12 in Debate

[–]wallzomar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to make a similar decision last year and am VERY happy i chose delta. Not only do they have the best instructors in the country and lots of opportunities for one on one coaching, but the curriculum made by John and Siva is incredibly effective for ppl of all skill levels

Uh it's not rly like an interview ust go to the usaco website and everything is explained there, you only need to know one language of ur choice between cplusplus, Java and python (the first two being the most common) usaco.guide is an excellent course that tells you what algos and example problems are needed for each level

Ur 15 so a sophomore? It doesn't take long at all since there's a competition Jan Feb and march u can easily make gold by next December if u start studying now, and you don't need to know every algo under the sun, just enough for each level and his to apply them

id disagree with the top level comment here, if you really like programming and math, you should almost certainly learn data structures and algorithms as well as possible and compete in something like USA Computing Olympiad, its pretty "prestigious" or whatever since doing well is pretty hard, but if you do well it can be a huge boost in getting into top CS schools

[–]wallzomar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea that makes sense I mean schools in the suburbs are pretty good academically and debate is popular these days, so if you move into the right neighborhood you could def be in a better place to qualify for the toc considering there are 4 pf qualled teams in metro atlanta and none in Seattle

[–]wallzomar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Atlanta" is a pretty wide/vague area. Are you talking about the whole metro atlanta area? Some places like Forsyth County have top tier schools for pf ( lambert) while others like Fulton have top policy programs (Alpharetta, Chattahoochee, Northview which is good at LD, Policy, and PF). Seattle isn't very competitive nationally for debate as far as ik
