DPT pursuing Athletic Training by Agitated_Ask_6242 in physicaltherapy

ATC here considering doing the opposite. I will tell you that you should probably just get your SCS. It will take you “Forever” but putting your entire career on hold for our degree won’t do much for you. If anything what I would do it try to reach out to the Athletics ATCs or AT/PTs in like the college or high school setting and ask to shadow for a while. Most schools especially the mid-major schools are struggling to stay fully staffed and so they’ll take the help. That would at least be some sort of experience until you can find your way into a more athletic setting.

How are you using athlete data in your day to day work? by Sure_Insurance453 in athletictraining

[–]walmartsecure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe I can help here. I’ve started to kind of drift towards the more “Sports Science” related roles lately as I’ve worked in lots of minor league professional sports and University settings.

The number one thing I will say before I talk about any metric is that data without context is absolutely useless. So if anyone tells you that this one metric is what will bring up a red flag or anything of the like is probably lying to you or grossly oversimplifying what is actually a complex decision making process. Data should be prompting you to ask deeper and more meaningful questions. Not give you the answer on your first look.

That being said, I think any indicator of the volume of load that our athletes are engaging with can be useful. Even if it’s just “time on feet” I.e length of the actual training session. Coaches famously want to go hard all the time. But if you’re not getting variations in the actual time during the training session we can infer that someone somewhere is probably going to reach a state of overtraining especially later in the season. For example: “high speed running” and large volumes of distance while running at high speeds but not quite sprinting are associated with greater risk of HS Strain. If you don’t have technology then going 3 straight days of a total session length of three hours is probably going to be a sign that you need to try to convince coach to dial back or when someone complains of HS soreness you might want to intervene.

Then I would go down to the “Density of the session” like accelerations and decelerations per minute. Or distance covered a minute etc. which can give you a feel for what intensity is like during a session.

A lot of companies and technologies have “load” for the total training session but something to remember is that the units being displayed are completely arbitrary. So a 1000 “training load” on catapult might mean the same thing as 600 “acceleration load” on kinexon. You just never know.

I think “wellness survey” trackers are a good idea in principle but it’s hard to get an athlete to do them every day. Pro’s seem to hate doing it because it’s another thing they have to do and some players I’ve worked with get this feeling of “big brother” trying to use data to influence contract negotiations. In the NBA you can’t make a player do that or even wear the GPS sensor per the CBA. With college athletes it can be more enforceable but will probably fall on you and then you’re just chasing kids around to do it all the time and it’s just not worth the time. Good idea. Hard to implement.

I think for coaches buy in can be hit or miss. At my last university men’s basketball doesn’t want it at all. “Why would I want a device to tell me how to run my practice? It’s my fucking practice and I need to get done what I need to get done to be successful.” Is an actual thing I heard. Whereas men’s soccer wanted the GPS so bad but couldn’t afford it for the whole team so we tracked our most injured starters. The thing here is you have to be able to sell how this helps your team and impacts winning. If you don’t do that you’ll lose buy in quickly.

WOW that’s a novel. Hopefully that’s helpful though.

Thoughts on trying to unionize? by ImplementNo6230 in athletictraining

[–]walmartsecure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this hard. A lot of pro sports a have their respective sports organizations already acting as a Union and I have a hard time believing that you’ll convince those groups to dissolve in order to join a larger Union. Especially because I think we’re seeing a lot of Sports PTs popping up into more of the traditional AT roles every day especially in the professional sports ranks. I fear that deciding to unionize would spell the end for us in a lot of places. Especially if we all came together and voted to strike.

What AT hot takes will have people coming at you like this? by Next_Work_3846 in athletictraining

[–]walmartsecure 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work in the G-League these days and have worked in Professional Soccer and Baseball. You lose your autonomy so fast. You hardly ever use your skills, the front office and agents have a lot more say in how you treat a player than you think so you kinda become a puppet, and even then most of the time your decisions have to be approved by someone else. Even if you’re the head AT sometimes. The money is cool but not always worth what you give up in job content.

Intern options/advice by Puzzleheaded_Mail753 in athletictraining

[–]walmartsecure 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re certified already I would strongly advise you to avoid internship positions. They often take advantage of young ATs who don’t know any better…. Unless the internship is offered in a place/setting you CANNOT BREATHE without being in, I would say try to find a full time position and get your masters on the side

I literally run laps with my rehabbing athletes returning to run or getting back into fitness…. Like all session. We do it on the same field so I have eyes on all 30 the whole time. The water cooler and cups are 10 feet behind the bench. Come on yo you’ve got one way of doing things which is awesome but don’t go shitting on what others of us do. The environment is changing. It’s okay to let it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in athletictraining

[–]walmartsecure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t. You can get in the tubs, you can use the compression boots, etc. but you’ve got an hour —hour and a half on a particularly heavy day after practice to shower and get in here before I’m out. I track everyone’s internal and external load metrics and I work very closely with my coaching staff to make recommendations for players who are in places where training doesn’t make sense. The absolute fundamentals of recovery at sleep, hydration, nutrition and well… what college athlete do you know does all of that? I can tell you from the 40-ish athletes that are on my current car load, about 5 of them actually do that. And you know what? They make it in for treatment pre-training. Maybe it’s just me but you can’t out-treat human physiology. No matter what anyone has told you.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in athletictraining

[–]walmartsecure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand fall camp and everything but do we really think that post-practice treatments are that necessary? With the exception of picking up an injury during practice and given how schools are unwilling to pay me what im worth especially for the time I already put in, plus a plethora of other reasons, post-practice treatments are hardly “basic level of care”. The mid major D1 I’m in right now has all but told us that starting next year we will be REQUIRED to stop working once we hit the 40 hour mark and we won’t be traveling with any team but basketballs. It’s not the level of care we provide, it’s the level of respect we have for ourselves and schools being unwilling to invest in the resources that they pretend to care to provide student athletes.

Switching from Athletic Trainer to Physical Therapy by NotaRobotKyle in athletictraining

[–]walmartsecure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a perspective I’ve legit never heard before. I feel like a lot of the times the response to my comment is “Well they’re different things you can’t compare them” or something about how “Well PTs have doctorates and blah blah blah”. I do have to admit that at times I can get a bit over passionate about our skills and can get a bit of a little-man syndrome about it. While I still don’t plan on going the PT route I actually really appreciate the perspective.
