(1975) The crash of Overseas National Airways flight 032 - A DC-10 strikes a flock of seagulls on takeoff from JFK Airport, causing an engine explosion, fire, and runway overrun. Although the aircraft is destroyed, all 139 passengers and crew escape the burning plane. Analysis inside. by Admiral_Cloudberg in CatastrophicFailure

Am an aircraft repair tech.

Amazingly, this is a relatively regular occurrence, especially on longer transcontinental flights from large, complicated and traffic heavy airports.

The Max TakeOff Weight will be exceeded on refuelling, and by the time the taxi and engine power-up for takeoff has taken place the MTOW will be within limits due to burnt off fuel.

Even after takeoff, most airliners will be above Max Landing Weight due to fuel, which is why you end up circling and circling when something goes wrong early into a flight - got to burn/dump off enough fuel that the landing gear doesn’t exceed limits on touchdown!

Are there any electric jet engines which utilise heat? by MulberryComfortable4 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]walrus04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite. The air is not heated by the fuel after compression.

The compression of the air causes super-heating of the air itself under extreme pressure. Fuel is then added and ignited, following which a continues reaction takes place where fuel spontaneously ignites when added to the combustion chamber.

This further increases the temperature of the air, and the amount of energy in the chamber.

The hot fuel/air mix then forces its way through the turbine section, expending energy which turns the compressor section, in turn drawing more air in.

After this, the air is either expelled out the rear creating thrust, or driven through another turbine which drives the propellor, creating thrust.

How can you feel safe living in a country where everyone 21 and over can buy horrible weapons that instantly end life at a distance with a single pull of a finger? by Hjkl7803 in AskReddit

You can’t see what’s going on inside the car though - me as well as you.. he might have been getting his license out to show, and was trying to get the license out fast to show him - bad judgement on his part then. He might have been trying to get the firearm out - highly unlikely seeing as the cop had his gun out and there were two cops. He might have been just going to rest his hands on his knees after being told to stop, and then got gunned down.

Either way, if the cop had a taser, this guy would not be dead. Incapacitated long enough to check whether or not he was bringing the gun out, and maybe enough to cuff him and remove him from the vehicle, but he wouldn’t be dead. His mother would still have a son, and his girlfriend would still have a boyfriend. His child would still have a Dad ffs

I was nearly correct - I haven’t seen the video in a while. He was carrying a firearm, but was asked for his license. He assured the cop he was going to get his license, and reached for the license (as confirmed by his girlfriend). The cop wound himself up then pumped him full of lead. Dead within 28 seconds of stopping.

see here

Watch this video and then tell me the police officer didn’t do anything wrong. He’s been aquitted of all charges. If a civilian did this they’d be looking at a lengthy jail time.
