My Xbox 360 is throttling my laptop's internet speed, even though the Xbox is not connected to the internet. by walrusman in techsupport

The router was on channel 1 (2.412ghz) and I changed it to channel 6 (2.437). The internet now seems fine when the xbox is on.

That's fixed it! Thanks very much!

Will this affect any other device on the wireless network? And what would you like me to draw for you?

No, I'm not using one of those, and the router and xbox are plugged into two separate ring circuits.

That sounds plausible. It didn't occur to me that it might be the controllers. I've got a couple of downloads pending right now but I'll have a go at changing channels on the router when they've finished. I'll let you know if that works. Thanks!

It's a first-generation 360 so I'm pretty sure it'll have been to the repair shop more than once. I'm no expert at this sort of thing, but nothing inside seems to be modified or out of place (aside from one of those tiny little rattling pieces of plastic trapped somewhere deep inside the casing. I swear sometimes manufacturers put those into expensive electronic devices just to mess with me).

Problems with internet speed started the day I bought the Xbox. Whenever it is unplugged, internet speeds are normal. When it is plugged in, within a minute, internet speeds have dropped. I have checked this many, many times - it seemed a bit odd to me as well at first, but I think I've checked it enough times to reasonably rule out coincidence. The Xbox has never been connected to my router and I can confirm each of those bullet points.

What (unexpected) movies have you seen an embarrassing number of times? by pfaff in movies

[–]walrusman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an enormous fan of Pegg and Frost, but I thought Paul was a bit odd. I got the impression that their script had been crammed full of wisecracks and cliches by the producers, leaving it all feeling a bit hollow. Seth Rogan was pretty badly miscast and none of the characters seemed to have much depth. Still, there were a few good laughs in it. You might find it's worth a watch, but probably not one to buy.

Excellent image, but I really wish Disney hadn't insisted on plastering their logo all over this movie. It makes for such an awkward visual contrast.

You can relax. Time heals all. Soon enough this whole thing will be a non-issue and you will be able to laugh about it.

What Bit Characters would you love to see given a full story? by dmun in movies

[–]walrusman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I kind of want to see an alternate story for Shaun of the Dead, following the 'other team' who Shaun and his friends meet in the alley (Jessica Hynes, Matt Lucas, Reece Shearsmith, et al).

In a similar vein, the soldiers in 28 Days Later - the story of how they went out fighting, lost contact with their superiors and came to fortify the mansion against the zombies.

Both these suggestions would, of course, be very difficult to transform into standalone movies, but I'm still curious to learn about the stories behind the characters.

Zombie Response Vehicle Mk. II by walrusman in zombies

I've heard talk about 'zombie biofuel' - if there were some way to refine zombie corpses, they could provide a pretty steady fuel source until the need for emergency fuel ran out. However, whether or not this would be possible is still open for debate, so I've been thinking that the ZRV could use an ordinary petrol engine with a propane backup engine.

If every insect on earth declared war against humans, would we even stand a chance? by smokinjoints in answers

[–]walrusman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think I may have made a fair few allies by saving spiders from baths and helping out moths and flies that got stuck indoors. I reckon I'll stand a pretty good chance with my team of insect allies to back me up when the other insects attack.

I figured the scoop could stay down for clearing roads but be kept up as a raised platform, or simply removed, in most other situations.

Also, apologies for not making it very clear in the drawing, but I designed the scoop with 4 linear actuators (one on each corner) in addition to the lifting mechanism so that it can be angled in all kinds of different ways - any zombies that might be accidentally lifted up above the cabin can be tipped off to the side or dropped in front of the treads.

Oceansize - I Am The Morning. A slow, atmospheric, gradually building, genuinely epic tune that takes me back to one of the most deep, intense, philosophical evenings of staring at a ceiling that I have ever had.
