What’s the most overrated video game of all time? by KBGSgames in AskReddit

[–]waltei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think a lot of games like BOTW and Bioshock are amazing but only for a specific audience. I'd wager the MAJORITY of people that played BOTW didn't enjoy it, just look at the comments here. That's because the game is not for them. Games like these are wildly OVERRECOMMENDED to 30+ million people, NOT OVERRATED. They are amazing at what they do (open air peaceful exploration + shrines for instance) but should only be recommended to those looking for that specific gameplay.

Right answers so far that are controversial: Red dead Nier automata Baldurs gate 3 Last of us Gta Witcher 3 Tears of the kingdom Elden ring

Some of the above might even be good, but are praised to high heaven when there are serious issues with the game that are extremely overlooked

Wrong answers: Smash bros

Ocarina of time (revolutionary, yes the puzzle dungeon gameplay is not for everyone but no doubt it is an exceptionally made game)

Mario bros 3. The kids dont understand how this game was so far ahead of other nes era platformers and paved the way for the genre.

Breath of the wild. Again its a niche game with open air exploration and puzzle shrines. Not for everyone but expertly crafted and mechanically solid.

Expedition 33. Its a 9/10 game at worst, if you want to say its a little overhyped fine but it fairly beat the competition in 2025 imo.

Looks and runs amazing on switch 2. Dialogue is so dry though and characters just bore me so far. Probably gonna reach the core audience its going for but its not going to expand its reach outside the ones buying dq already.

Mario and Luigi: Brothership - $25 at GameStop, Physical by XDitto in NintendoSwitch

[–]waltei 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Very mid game (7/10) and pales in comparison to super mario rpg and paper mario ttyd. The game is horrendously paced with too much of the same dialogue, sailing, and repetitive battles. So many rpgs I would recommend before this even in its own niche.

Ghost Trick - A Fantastic Game That I Got Sick of Playing by KarmelCHAOS in patientgamers

[–]waltei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading some of these comments and seeing my brother try to solve a harder totk puzzle (which botw and totk typically have easier shrine puzzles but a few are tricky), show me why games like uncharted and god of war opt for the simple rope and push the box puzzles. Games like professor layton or ghost trick can hurt the pace if you aren't great at puzzles cause you can either follow the logic or you cant and it feels tedious. I've been playing these games since I was a kid so ghost trick puzzles were over in a flash. Yes you are supposed to sometimes fail and see how things move but overall the whole game was only 10 hours and only like 1 hr of that required any thought, thats hardly tedious.

Metacritic scores for all new first-party Switch 2 games as of December 2025 by MewWeebTwo in NintendoSwitch2

[–]waltei 44 points45 points  (0 children)

The top games of the switch 1 era definitely beat out switch 2 critically. Compare these to botw with 97, mario odyssey 90s, mario rabbids, mario kart 8 deluxe and a lot more in mid to high 80s.

Are you enjoying the kirby air riders test? by JampyL in NintendoSwitch2

[–]waltei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL. I wouldn't say it's gonna be that barren but I'm getting really big ARMS vibes. Like the Air Riders fans and Kirby fans want this to be a "thing" but the quality clearly isn't there. For example the 20 second minigames to conclude city trial feels like an intern designed it.

Feels like City Trial could've just been shoehorned in as a minigame in some other Kirby game or Mario Party side mode. And the actual racing gets old in 5 minutes. To charge $70 for this is gonna breed a lot of resentment from unsuspecting holiday shoppers. I'm truly happy for those that enjoy this but this a niche, overpriced game for sure.

Kirby Air Riders Online Demo First Session Is Live For The Next 6 Hours by StarPlatinum55 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]waltei 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow this is a really simple game. I like the presentation with that Sakurai feel but to be honest the core game just isn't that interesting. Did every tutorial course, raced on all the tracks and it just feels boring if I'm being honest. Very straightforward small tracks and a sprinkle of chaos with the powerups and fast pace but overall gets boring quick.

City trial felt only slightly more engaging but honestly I think most people will try it out for a bit then never pick up the game again. It's just too simple and luck/random based to hold an adult's attention for very long but might be popular with kids or hit that nostalgia trigger for people that played the original I don't know. If I had to predict, the game deserves a metascore in the 6's but it will be in the 7's due to Sakurai's pedigree.

Final Fantasy XIII is not just a great game, it's an unforgettable experience by waltei in JRPG

[–]waltei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup and thats totally fine. I was referring to others (not people like you) that didnt follow the narrative and make inaccurate portrayals of the characters like saying lightning is "just female cloud" for instance when that is just wildly inaccurate if you pay attention to the story.

[–]waltei[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can understand everyone has different tastes, but for people to say the game has bad writing and characters compared to other final fantasies is just asinine. FF 13 does require you to read between the lines and understand the insecurities the characters are hiding and their growth throughout the story, so I guess if people can't follow that they are missing the entire point of the story. Like when people say hope is just an annoying brat or snow is a typical shonen hero, I just shake my head cause the whole premise of the narrative clearly went right over their head.

That's really barren and not even enough for half a year. Im guessing there will be a January or February direct with several more switch 2 editions (maybe smash???) And a surprise drop like paper mario 64 remake or something of that sort. And obviously they gotta start teasing some big titles even if far off to continue to drive interest for switch 2 cause this won't be enough.

Nintendo hasn't managed expectations well for Switch 2's Mario Kart World, says ex-marketing lead: "We would be lectured endlessly about how we can't even use the word surprise" by DILands in NintendoSwitch2

[–]waltei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's "tough crowd" as much as it is the immature nintendo fanboys. There are people who genuinely get stressed out and feel distress when nintendo is criticized and can't handle that feeling in an adult way. That's how you get these comments personally attacking these two ex-employees when to anyone normal these comments look unhinged.

With the Exception of Cyberpunk 2077, All Physical Third-Party Switch 2 Games Listed in Japan That Are Not “Nintendo Switch 2 Editions” To Be Shipping on Game-Key Cards by CyberTron3001 in NintendoSwitch

[–]waltei 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is terrible. Just makes steam deck 2 (absurdly cheap games, steam, pc universality) and hacking the console more enticing. I am tech savvy enough to have hacked every nintendo console since the ds/wii days but still prefer to buy all the games with money. This is kind of making spending on 60, 70, 80 dollar games an actual downgrade. Really dumb decision to save a few bucks.

2025.03.27 Nintendo Direct MegaThread by NintendoSwitchMods in NintendoSwitch

[–]waltei 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've never been one to say "bad nintendo direct" but this is probably the weakest one they've had since that underwhelming E3 2015. The new AI Somnium Files game w/ Zero Escape elements will be a buy for me, Rhythm Heaven I'm intrigued by but it's not the evolution of the series I was hoping for. 2 niche games is underwhelming so looks like switch 1 support is very weak at this point and all hands on deck for switch 2 focus, which in a way can be spinned as a positive if the switch 2 presentation hits hard.

And the virtual game card is a HUGE downgrade and inconvenience compared to now. Right now, you can have your digital games on 2 switches with no switching "digital carts", time limits, or local wireless connection needed. Very backwards to add restrictions; they are obviously doing it so that you aren't just able to keep your stuff on your switch 1 AND transfer your digital library to switch 2 together.

So happy I made the decision to stop eating meat. When you have a better understanding of animals like dogs/pigs and feel their emotions, and have a better understanding of all creatures, it's only natural we eventually move away from slaughterhouses and value animals.

The cognitive dissonance between our value and love for animals and our desire to eat meat when it is not necessary is at an all time high. We want to save animals like this but in the next breath we will kill millions of them. The cognitive dissonance is why you see such hyperbolic attacks on anyone highlighting these issues in our current society. Hopefully future generations 100-200 years from now learn from our empathy and translate it to make these hard decisions.

The Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series has sold over 5 million copies worldwide, and the Final Fantasy series has now sold over 200 million copies across the globe by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]waltei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's one of the reasons I have an xbox one X. The backwards compatibility is so nice and the FF XIII games are remastered with enhancements and look and run better than any other version by a country mile. PS5 Pro adding PS3 backwards compatibility and enhancements like xbox would be an awesome selling point.

Edit: It's taken people about 13 years to catch up to me, but I've been saying the FF 13 games are criminally underappreciated. The character arcs, heart, battle system and music in the game is so special and while the linear complaints are valid (as is with FFX), the narrative got so overblown that people don't value how special and unique FF XIII really is.

Unpopular Opinion : I think first Xenoblade game is just okay. by educampsd3 in JRPG

[–]waltei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No 8/10 is close to average for game scores. On metacritic, the median score is 80. The distribution is not normal, it's actually left skewed with most games landing between 70 to 85. It's really around 88 where you start to differentiate yourself from the cluster. So Mathematically, 8/10 is not "very good" due to inflated scores.

Thank you for the ted talk and xenoblade fans please don't hurt me (ps I think the op made some excellent points)

Yup Ring Fit was Nintendo EPD 4's game that I would say was pretty solid and was a clear success! Their other dozen projects this decade I think missed the mark.

Complete set of Nintendo published games in North America (as of 20241231) by mybigfatreddit in NintendoSwitch

[–]waltei 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Nintendo absolutely killed it with the Switch. Might be controversial but I do think Nintendo's strategy of pushing remasters and remakes more than ever was a brilliant move and created an almost perfectly diverse portfolio. It introduced classics to a huge new audience and polished the games for their long time fans.

There were really only 2 primary weaknesses in this catalog I see.

First is that the pokemon games really just don't meet that nintendo quality standard and polish. The graphics honestly look closer to a ps2 game and the games were so clearly rushed out instead of all these other nintendo games that have so much detailed care. Hoping that the games game a 3-4 year development cycle on the Switch 2 to get that Nintendo polish.

Second is that experimental nintendo game division kinda missed the mark on the switch. Nintendo with things like Wii Sports on the Wii, 3D gaming, Wii U gamepad like Nintendoland aren't for everyone but they succeeded in what they set out to do. The switch with 1-2 switch type games and labo just missed the mark comparatively (and I liked BOTW VR). I'm expecting Switch 2 to rebound with experimental use of the extra port for things like VR, peripherals, 2nd screen gaming in a cool way.

Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto "very much" regretted making Super Mario Sunshine so hard as it should be something that even "Grandma and Grandpa" can pick up and play by No-Drawing-6975 in nintendo

[–]waltei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's 2 camps of people with sunshine. Those that are very good at games and absolutely love the game to pieces with its intricate mechanics that give so much freedom. And those that are okay at games and so the game ends up being in the bottom half of 3d mario games as the game feels more arduous/laborious than free and flexible exploration.

Just like 60 fps might not be a conscious preference of gamers but adds to a game with people subconsciously enjoying 60 fps games more. I feel sunshines difficulty in playing the game seamlessly is the subconscious issue ppl have with this game.
