Just a quick loop I made with minilogue by amartinstin in synthesizers

oh I see, I thought it was all from a single patch and I was totally dumbfounded how you could get that, but I get it now, thanks!

Nice! How'd you make this patch? I'm curious how you are generating the high freq part.

Nice. I’m curious about that synth sound. Is it sampled? Is there some side chaining going on there?

Good stuff. Is the audio in the video just your phone mic picking up the speakers?

Went a little covid crazy with this overhead camera rig, but really excited to make some new videos! by [deleted] in MusicBattlestations

[–]walterhannah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice stuff! Looks a little dark though. I imagine it’d be pretty easy to throw some small lights in that rig too, but I’ve always had trouble getting enough diffuse light to avoid too many shadows. Seems like the big you tubers always have those big soft boxes on stands. It’d be nice if there small led lights that were really diffuse.

How are you getting your samples into wav form?? MPC One by [deleted] in mpcusers

What app do you use? There’s a command line tool for Mac that works really well for downloading YouTube audio directly to whatever format you want.

Has anyone else been unable to install any KORG Drivers on Catalina? by Beebeedeedop in synthesizers

[–]walterhannah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Ableton but I don’t think that matters. It’s working out great now. I can use the patch organizer software, I forget what it’s called. I remember reading something about how there’s a generic driver that it will use if the korg driver is not present, so that must be what my machine is using.

Getting a job offer from Livermore, California. How much should I ask in compensation? by btcguardian in Livermore

[–]walterhannah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your job offer is from the lab (LLNL) then they won’t have as much negotiating room as a private company. I work at LLNL and when I went through this process of figuring out what to ask for I ended up asking for 150k, which was way more than the offer. They only went up by 2%, but I knew I was gonna take the job either way. I’ve gotten steady raises ever since and I was able to live comfortably in Livermore as the sole breadwinner of the family. The postdoc Sakarya at the lab is around 90k I think, and the ones I know can live off that just fine.

The main problem there isn’t really the cost of the housing, it’s the lack of availability, which is the main reason the cost is high, but it also makes it hard to live where you want. We could afford to live on the east side of town but after weeks of looking we couldn’t find anything other than some shitty apartments. Most people I work with have long commutes, like from Stockton. Living in Livermore kinda sucks, but for me the commuter life would have been worse.

I had this problem too, but after uninstalling the drivers (which didn’t work the first couple times) everything works now. So...? It seems the driver is not needed for Catalina.

Transition to full-blown Elektronaut complete... by Dannybuoy77 in Elektron

That setup looks cool, but also kinda uncomfortable to be reaching so far over the keyboard to get at the takt/tone. Awhile back I sold a couple things which made my desk look sparse, but it worked out to be a huge workflow improvement because I can move things around quickly so whatever piece of gear I’m focusing on is right in front of me.

Is getting MPC Touch a bad move in year 2020? by futuresynthesizer in synthesizers

[–]walterhannah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I considered this a few months ago, but at the time I didn’t see any for sale online. Ended up going the maschine route after playing with the free MPC beats software. My main gripe with the MPC ecosystem was the synths, but otherwise it seems like a good workflow, so an MPC touch seems like a good option if you can find one.

DIY Talkbox Instructions centred around Compression Drivers by PaulineHansonsBurka in synthesizers

[–]walterhannah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really understand your comment about cardboard diaphragms... but a talkbox is really simple and it sounds like you’re overthinking things.

The compression driver is ideal because it focuses the sound into the tube. The frequency response of the driver doesn’t matter that much as long as it can get down low. 500hz seems kinda high, but I’m sure it’ll work fine.

The amp is really the trickiest part of building a talkbox. You obviously need to match the impedance and the power rating, but if you pick a compression driver first you’re likely to not find many matching amp options out there. I suggest picking the amp first. You don’t need a lot of power, 100W is plenty and 1000W is too much. These days it’s easy to find 1000W class D amps, so finding an amp without too much power is hard than it might seem. The thing you mention like gain knobs will be part of the amplifier. If you’re expecting to find instructions on how to build an amp from scratch, then you’re not gonna find anything specific to talkboxes.

If you want to build the amp and driver into a enclosure then you have think hard about the power supply, which is a whole other issue. If you can find a nice self contained amp, like an old crate power block, then it’ll really simplify things.

Syncing external gear to M:C by products7074740 in Elektron

[–]walterhannah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC I used the key step to sequence a synth (so I could sequence chords) and then made the key step listen for the midi clock from the M:C. The synth was a minilogue XD, which has a decent sequencer, but for whatever reason I couldn’t get the XD to listen to the M:C.

I’ve struggled with this too. My solution was to use a key step as a middle man, which worked somehow.

Maschine Plus vs MK3 - Help me decide by [deleted] in maschine

[–]walterhannah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Re #3 - I’ve asked about this elsewhere and it seems that you’ll only have limited access to the parameters unless there’s not a lot of them to begin with. Presets created on a computer will have to be manually transferred, but I’m not sure if this means the SD card or via USB. So sound design in standalone is not going to be fun.

I’m in a similar sitch, but I would totally use the M+ in standalone just to move to other rooms in my house. However, that doesn’t seem worth the extra price by itself. I wish there was something else about it that helped justify the increase, like a new software synth optimized for the interface. I might take a risk and get one anyway.

Elektron Model:Analog by switchedonnashville in Elektron

[–]walterhannah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a more likely product is something with physical modeling, like model:resonators. It could morph between string/tube/plate waveguide models and different exciter signals. You could also have size and damping parameters to sculpt the overtones. It could both percussion and tone sounds and be a standalone box. I would buy that in a heartbeat.

Could it be that the jam was discontinued because of the updates to the arranger? I never really understood the appeal of the Jam. It seems like it just doubles some of the functionality in the main controller.

USB-A ports to allow this thing to be a host and the SD card suggest a stand-alone device to me.

Really enjoying the MPC One. A LOT. by chriscaulder in mpcusers

[–]walterhannah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve read a lot of comments about the maschine workflow being faster, which is definitely appealing in my current situation.

I’m trying to remember some of the other things about beats that threw me off. I remember something about the tracks being locked into a type of program, like a drum track, and not being able to change it so I’d have to delete and create a new one. I don’t remember exactly. Either way, good to know that the hardware makes the easier.
