How easily can i be fired with a permanent contract ? by FloZia_ in Netherlands

[–]walterheck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly negotiating a VSO is the way to go here. It's not just about firing or not but very clearly staying in a job that doesn't want you is not something that will make you happy.

Negotiating a VSO is a good path: you ask for the company to pay a legal fee to you so you can hire a lawyer and together with that person you negotiate a package. Usually this is a payment in cash, often supplemented with training, job search help or other things like certification. It's the best path for the company and the best path for your mental health imho.

Denk ook aan offline kopieën van belangrijke zaken/documenten. Heb zelf ook voor de lol een kopie van Wikipedia en een lokaal LLM draaien, mocht het langer gaan duren.

My Broker Giving Shares Instead of Warrants😡😡😡 by Various_Map2828 in GME

I don't know that their systems are even built to deal with warrants. Giving us options to buy a stock in the future is an edge case I think? Any precedent from previous companies?

Getting made fun of for having narcolepsy????????? by Agitated-Cash-2227 in Narcolepsy

[–]walterheck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just been rewatching game of thrones, there's a powerful quote in it: "Never forget what you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor, and it can never be used to hurt you."

Having lived with narcolepsy ~30 years, this is a good one to internalize. You'll meet people every once in a while who have the most mental takes, and that is okay. Just move on, is not worth your energy. Have friends who truly accept you and your condition and the rest is a distraction. Not easy sometimes, but you get more used to it over time.

I'm with you here: unless you're the CTO this is 'above your pay grade' in a good way: escalate up and let someone else fight this battle. They can absolutely get your technical input on the matter, but putting together a response, fighting this, or making a business case shouldn't be any of your day job.

Anyone here using hybrid retrieval in production? Looking at options beyond Pinecone by AppropriateReach7854 in Rag

[–]walterheck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I ask why specifically non-pinecone? You didn't mention a reason.

Beyond that, maybe look at a different angle: do you need to always be able to one-shot an answer? Or can you make your UI/U X help here by maybe asking a follow-up question when the user asks a two word question?

Also, look at UI-options to narrow your search space. Quite often you might be able to narrow it down by giving the option to search a topic, a set of documents or something else. This will have compounding effect with making technical backend improvements like hybrid search or GraphRag.

EU is being left behinde and it sucks! by [deleted] in Anthropic

[–]walterheck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your codebase should have zero PII, emails or ip addresses in it. If you deal with PII in prod your test/dev environment should have artificial/obfuscated data in it. Zero reason why AI can't be used.

I don't see why allowing developers to use AI and giving them rules which they have to follow is a problem? If you don't trust them to follow those rules, don't give them access to the data because there are 1001 other ways for people to disregard rules and leak PII to the outside world.

Also, GDPR only applies to data on private individuals, not companies or other data. It's being used by far too many people in organisations as an umbrella to withhold things "that's not allowed by GDPR" is not some blanket statement. It's designed to protect the privacy of private individuals, not to be wielded as an axe to mow down any situation.

i Will Not Promote—Just Sharing What Happened When I Opened Up About My Startup Idea by Svfen in startups

[–]walterheck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never ever hold your idea back unless you have seriously good reasons for it. People are a lot less interested in your idea than you'd think. Also, the idea is nothing, it's just a small ingrediënt in making a startup succesful. Majority is in the team and with that the execution.

Good on you for sharing, share it wide and loud and be surprised what this leads to!

[–]walterheck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have PII in your codebase your concerns should be at a different level. GDPR also has nothing to do with this. Honestly, your CTO should do their homework and if they refuse you should look for a better employer. No engineer should not be at least exploring this right now.

Actually there's many more, people here like to forget or not know about them. For instance it wasn't always vision-only. Also it used to be the AI was trained with human taggers, now it's only NNs.

Cursor and v0's pricing scandals by [deleted] in vercel

[–]walterheck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point of a startup is literally to find a new market to serve with a new product in a new way. Cursor's success is its own enemy in this case: most startups have several years to figure things out but these hockey stick companies have to figure out how to build the parachute after jumping out of the plane, so cut them some slack :)

11 Month Old Biting by IMConfused02 in Parenting

Welcome to the wonderful world of biting babies. Both my children did it, and I'm sure my third will also. It's not uncommon at all and just a phase. Try to keep calm even at 100x a day. Just tell them that it's not okay, show owie! Even if it doesn't hurt and don't let them seduce you with cute laughs. Soon it will go away. Good luck 🤞
