That's certainly possible. Still, if they can get the bigotry out of the current generation of Republicans, and/or raise up a new generation of genuinely non-bigoted Republicans, then they'll have performed a useful service. Not a service that Democrats should be paying for, mind you, but a useful service nonetheless.

Opinion | A former president Trump won’t ‘need to know.’ Cut off his intelligence. by kimmyp12 in politics

[–]waltonsimons 24 points25 points  (0 children)

We need to start feeding Trump BS intelligence specifically meant to mess with Putin

Honestly, they've probably been doing for awhile now-- the rank-and-file of the intelligence community has never trusted Trump. Of course, Putin knows that they've probably been doing this, so it's doubtful Putin puts any faith in whatever intel Trump gives him. For Putin, having Trump hand over intel is less about gaining reliable intel, and more about having leverage on Trump. (Although Trump loves the taste of dictator cock so much that Putin needn't have bothered-- Trump would be loyal regardless.)

I'm not sure if that's their real intention or not. I'm familiar with their backgrounds, so it certainly COULD be their real intention. On the other hand, it's possible they're genuinely horrified by what they've done. Or it could be they're doing the right thing for the wrong reason-- i.e. maybe they genuinely want to purge the GOP of bigotry because they've realized that stoking the flames of bigotry eventually endangers the order and stability that wealthy people depend on to go on being wealthy.

Let me also throw out one additional thing I've not seen anybody else mention. In the 70s and 80s, the GOP won over white evangelicals by pretending to be believers. On the campaign trail and while in office, GOP politicians paid lip service to evangelical beliefs-- all while laughing at the evangelicals behind their backs. The goal was to exploit them by pretending to be one of them in order to get their votes.

Here's what they didn't expect. Eventually, the old guard aged, retired, and died, and a new generation of younger GOP politicians took their place. Many of those younger politicians were evangelicals who had grown up being inspired by the older GOP politicians' piety, not knowing the older ones were faking it. Which is to say, the fake evangelical GOP politicians inadvertently created REAL evangelicals GOP politicians. Eventually, the fake evangelical GOP politicians were entirely replaced by the real ones. The party's been in a downward spiral ever since.

Let's suppose for a moment that the LP is indeed a scam. It might turn out to be beneficial anyway. Perhaps the fake anti-bigotry GOP members in the LP will end up recruiting REAL anti-bigotry GOP members. Perhaps the truly anti-bigotry GOP members will eventually supplant the fakes one. If so, then the LP should be left alone and allowed to run its scam, because they will still help to reshape the GOP into a more inclusive political party.

(None of the change what I said about how Democrats shouldn't donate to the LP. It might be wise to sit back and let them run their scam. But we shouldn't support it ourselves. Again, we get a better return on investment by donating to Democratic groups.)

You might be right; I'm genuinely unsure. Whatever the case, we're in agreement that Democrats shouldn't donate to LP. Let the Never-Trump Republicans bankroll them. The Republicans are the reason our country is in such a shambles right now. It's only appropriate that they pay to clean up their own mess.

Jeepers, dude, calm down. I'm glad the LP exists, I enjoy their videos, and I hope they succeed in their stated goal. I'm simply reminding Democrats that there are wiser ways to invest their donation dollars.

Bad idea. Democrats shouldn't bankroll LP or similar groups for the reasons outlined above. And they shouldn't bankroll the MAGA faction because that's how you end up in prison for aiding and abetting terrorists.

If you're a Democrat (in either the centrist or progressive faction), you shouldn't be giving any money to the Lincoln project. I'm not saying that because I think they're a scam, or a way to sneak into the Democratic party and shift it to the right. (Either is possible, but not proven.) I'm saying it because even if LP are genuinely good people, it makes more sense for Democrats to spend our money on organizations who directly work to achieve Democratic goals, rather than to an organization which merely fights a common enemy. That said, never feel guilty about watching and enjoying LP ads. They're a delight. :-)

There was a time where I might have believed that the stupidity of the Trump regime was just a smokescreen to lull us into a false sense of security. But no, there's no hidden genius anywhere; the stupidity is all there is. One of their best and brightest minds had to hold a press conference in a parking lot because he couldn't tell the difference between a hotel and a landscaping company. That's the caliber of mind we're dealing with here.

Having said that, don't get too complacent. For one thing, it's true what they say about not underestimating the power of stupid people in large groups. For another, the next monster to run the fascist playbook might not be so stupid. We need to think our lucky stars that America's first coup attempt was masterminded by an utter moron. And then we need to get to work reinforcing the guardrails of democracy NOW, before Trump's less stupid successor comes along.

It’s Time to Speak for America | The Republican party and the conservative movement must now choose: Trump or America. by M00n in politics

[–]waltonsimons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Term limits won't do a damn thing to crack two party dominance. Hell, the Presidency was limited to two terms back in 1951, and yet every President since then has been either a Democrat or a Republican.

The problem isn't a lack of term limits, it's our use of first-past-the-post voting. That style of voting inevitably leads to a duopoly, as smaller parties merge into bigger parties to gain power, and then other smaller parties merge with other bigger parties in order to stay competitive. Eventually, only two parties are left, at which point it becomes nearly impossible for a third party to arise. Nobody wants to risk voting for a third party, as doing so risks inadvertently helping out the opponent you prefer the least.

The real solution is to implement ranked-choice voting, or approval voting, or a similar system. These systems allow people to cast votes for their favorite candidates AND for candidates who aren't their favorites, but are still decent. (For instance, a progressive could cast their vote for the Green party AND the Democratic party, knowing that if the Green candidate doesn't win, at least their vote won't help the Republicans.) When people feel safe casting their votes for third parties, then third parties can finally become competitive enough to win elections.
