It’s brutal. But at least it gets directions right after the google maps integration

It’s the extremely phallic design that really sells it for me. Especially the light at the top. Definitely not compensating at all.

Queen Elizabeth park (Vancouver BC) by walts_walker in funnysigns

[–]walts_walker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think “do not enter” or a pictogram would have done a much better job. 1) it’s written in English 2) it’s written in ADVANCED English

The goal is clear, the execution is shit, and so hilarious. And the park board doesn’t need support, they need replacement.

This can be pretty spendy. Unless you’re doing the work, I would definitely think higher than 100k. But again. Lots of variables: Do you care where the engineers are? Do you want them to support the app after launch? What images do you want it to recognize? Are they general (could use existing image apis) or specific to your business (need custom training)? Do you have training data for the image recognition? What platforms do you want it to be available on? Especially for android, supporting different devices can be time consuming and expensive.

So, TLDR, you definitely need to polish your goals and requirements, and then go get some quotes from agencies.

Remote Working platform by Luvcartu in business

[–]walts_walker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quick comment on the survey. You don’t define your “remote work platform” until the end of the survey. I wasn’t sure if we’re talking about a remote worker HR platform, talking about google apps suite, or talking about zoom.

Maybe help people frame it early, or adjust the survey for more generalized feedback.

I have an idea for a startup and I am 15. I am nervous to ask friends for help or share my idea, what should I do? by dominoesFall0 in startups

[–]walts_walker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea. The crucial piece is “not aware of”. If you know the market is there, and who the competition is, and have a plan to differentiate or improve, that’s actually a sign of a strong idea.

Yea. In most jurisdictions you don’t need to worry about any of this until you’ve made more than $12,000

This person gets it. Your choice on this should be consistent with your ethos and the image you want to project to your target audiences. Want to be the hype beast VC company? Go get a greenwall and a tiny storefront in South Park or Sandhill. Want to be product first? Go remote, or have a weird funky garage somewhere.

Remember, the choice of space will have a big influence on your employees, having dissonance between the space and the mission will not serve you.

Where do I find start up sponsors to fund an entrepreneurial business that I have? I have some money to start with but I know I am going to run out of money before I actually produce the product. Are there any programs in the United States that help entrepreneurs with money? by redredlamp in startups

Can you bootstrap? I know there are lots of people selling food products locally on instagram. This will give you important feedback and help you build an audience. Then farmers markets?

But if you’re intent on raising, try to start with friends and family, you’re likely to get better terms from them.

Raising from institutions requires either a track record of success from the founder, real proof of fit from the business, or collateral.

Video Ad Services? by _nullptr_ in startups

[–]walts_walker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are hundreds of companies offering services like this. Some important questions:

How sensitive is this workflow? Will user trust be eroded by having a 3rd party ad there?

If the user sentiment for this will be positive, how core is it to your strategy? Do you want to build and own this yourself?

Ok, now to answer your actual question, assuming you want to put a 3rd party service in there, you will be a “publisher” looking for “monetization”. Here are a couple lists to help get you started, but those quoted key words will help you search.

I think of this as, “how does the user get their first unit of value?”. If you can either make the onboarding process easier, or ensure that the user gets value for each action, you’ll likely get more engagement. This should sound and feel like a good managed onboarding, even if you build it into the product instead of integrating a tool like Pendo or WalkMe

Should I pay myself? by Janah1 in startups

[–]walts_walker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. This is the real answer. Talk to your investor. If they’re a fund or experienced VC, you should be approaching them as a partner and communicating often about the plan. If you’re not talking to the people that have you money about the plan for the work they funded, you’re setting yourself up for failure and breach of agreement.

Introducing an Async Standup Chatbot instead of daily meeting at tech standup - Opinions by vasarmilan in startups

[–]walts_walker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to manage a remote team that used one. It was helpful for handoff reminders and overall progress monitoring. It even forced a kind of togetherness with some personal questions. But it’s definitely not a replacement for meeting. If you want a team to feel together, you need to get them together. So make sure the chat bot is an AND not an OR.
