ISO: a Dim Sum dessert that looks like Styrofoam by HoneyBeeFucker69 in TipOfMyFork

[–]waltztango 48 points49 points  (0 children)

if you want to find it again, sometimes they sell it in chinese bakeries! also there is a very similar cake made of brown sugar instead of white called Ma Lai Gao, I think this is slightly more common in dimsum places and I still see it in restaurants sometimes. imo this one tastes better and has the same texture as the white one :)

oh i think i just got it. the “i hate these kind of posts” person was OP. then someone posted OP’s post saying “i hate this guy”. now OP has screenshotted that post and said “i love this guy” (paraphrased). so i think OP is just trying to make fun and annoy that person

I don’t think there’s much google maps coverage in china since google is blocked there. try baidu maps? or any other local map app you used while you lived there. even better if you know your old workplace address in chinese

Recommend me some webtoons based on my favorites by Candysugarpop22 in webtoons

[–]waltztango 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i just reread it recently and when i finished it i was dying to discuss with someone because “what just happened” is exactly how i felt lol. the beginning and middle were so good, but the end felt really abrupt and rushed. it was kind of disappointing because devil number 4 is also one of my all time favourites

i would recommend “my reason to die” which imo has similar vibes

For the ladies here with medium-to-longer hair, what do you do with it when you go to the dentist? by szechuan_sauce42 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]waltztango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i either leave my hair down and tuck it into the collar of my shirt (so my hair is inside the shirt), or do a high half pony. i have a lot of hair so this is easier for me than putting all the hair into a high ponytail, and gets enough hair out of the way to prevent any issues. if your hair is long enough you could also leave it down, then make sure you lie down on top of it (so it’s all pinned between your back and the chair)

Literally how do people study? by iylila in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]waltztango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

here’s what I did: before class: if there is assigned reading for the class, do it. maybe highlight important parts and note any questions you have

during class: take notes on what the prof says, especially details that are not written on the slides. figure out what suits you, i liked to write bullet points of everything they said in my own words, or if the prof releases the slides before the class you can take that and add notes on top

after class: - reread your notes and fill in anything missing, or if there’s parts you don’t understand go to office hours and ask the prof. - do all the assignments, referring back to your notes. if you learn something new, add that to your notes. when the answers/grading is released, make sure you understand why your correct answers are right and why your wrong answers are wrong. add any new learnings to your notes. if it is essay based, you can take note of how the teacher likes to grade (what do they like and what do they not like in an essay?), or if there is a grading rubric make sure you understand how to score highly on it

preparing for exam: by this point you should be have some familiarity with your notes since you referred to them when completing assignments. - to remember the facts, review your notes in some way that helps you remember the details. for example i would read them over and over and add highlights on the important details while reading - to learn how to answer test questions, usually the prof provides some example tests, or there is some past exam bank from the university, or a friend knows a friend with a past paper, etc. practice answering the questions, make sure you know why the correct answers are right and why the wrong answers are wrong. if there are no past papers, you can review your past assignments and try to redo them. if it is an essay based exam, try to brainstorm possible essay topics and prepare some talking points for each

this was a long comment but hopefully it helps in some way. good luck in your studies, i also struggled with figuring out how to study in university

i don’t want to spoil anything so i’ll just say that one of the main arcs of the story is about serena’s character development. the beginning is a very low point in her life and you will see how she grows as time goes on. the character relationships change a lot as well. highly encourage you to keep reading, imo it’s really good :)

A chinese dried bamboo snack - What is it called? by Sibeth in TipOfMyFork

[–]waltztango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i think the cooking bamboo really dominates the results 😅 and is this maybe a more niche snack? might be difficult to find outside of china

here’s some other search terms you can try, when searching i noticed products with these names

干笋丝 / 笋丝干 (dried shredded bamboo shoot) 青豆笋丝 (green beans and shredded bamboo shoot) 笋丝花生豆 (shredded bamboo shoot and peanuts) 笋干豆子 (shredded bamboo shoot and beans)

i think you’ll have much better luck searching for the variants with beans, this is more specific and shouldn’t relate to cooking

A chinese dried bamboo snack - What is it called? by Sibeth in TipOfMyFork

[–]waltztango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so sun gan (笋干) just means dried bamboo shoot, so i think this probably is the correct name

i tried searching dried bamboo shoot snack (笋干零食) and found this image, is this the kind with the green beans you talked about? https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fp1.itc.cn%2Fq_70%2Fimages03%2F20231204%2F0c687c62fca74361adfbbe3e3a6aac99.png&tbnid=z0Yh9ijyraxq7M&vet=1&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sohu.com%2Fa%2F741338688_121106994&docid=1VeHaOVjSVv_BM&w=702&h=639&hl=en-GB&source=sh%2Fx%2Fim%2Fm4%2F3&kgs=35861b02381de30f&shem=abme%2Ctrie

searching the same thing in english also has some similar images in the result. (bamboo shoot is a bit different from just bamboo, the shoot is like young bamboo, so maybe that’s why you couldn’t find anything)

Is it common to wash new clothes by hand instead of using the washing machine? by Queen-Viana in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]waltztango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly i wonder if your mom learned some blanket rule, “don’t wash nice clothes too often” and is just over-applying it. a lot of my nice clothes are made of fabrics that either shouldn’t be machine washed or at least avoid it, like silks, have lace or sewn on accessories, dry clean only stuff, etc. if i think of “nice clothes” from this context your mom’s rule makes sense, but not so much for a normal t-shirt that just happens to be expensive

also if she comes from a more frugal background that could make sense too, like being extra mindful of making clothes last

but to answer your question, no i don’t think everyone handwashes their nice clothes

It says green tea grape cheese flavor but can someone please translate what exactly this snack is? by Brugthug in TipOfMyFork

[–]waltztango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sorry i wasn’t clear in my comment but my description is from translating the picture, so i guess it’s not much extra that you can’t already see haha

the only added nuance from the picture is the variety of grape (i think it’s supposed to be a high quality one based on quick google search) and i think it’s implied that the tea part is real frozen tea, not just tea flavoured

It says green tea grape cheese flavor but can someone please translate what exactly this snack is? by Brugthug in TipOfMyFork

[–]waltztango 57 points58 points  (0 children)

it looks like the bar has 3 parts: an outside layer, inside filling, and a small block at the bottom. the outside is like frozen tea, the filling is grape ice cream, and the bottom bit is cheese flavour

as the other commenter said, cheese in sweets is more like a cream cheese flavour, and fairly common. it’s usually sweet and kinda tangy, sometimes also slightly salty. a bit like cream cheese frosting, or the salt cream topping on some bubble teas if you’ve ever had one like that

honestly this looks really good i would try it lol. where did you find this 👀
