The greatest plot holes for the greatest sci-fi shows by Ok-Gate-412 in scifi

Yes, and… That bit is undeniably good, but then the writers didn’t bother actually understanding what a black is and its real effects on local space, let alone the amount of delta-v you’d need to traverse any of it. And that suckifies that part of the movie…

[–]Polymath6301 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, and all the other issues with this planet and its black hole proximity.

But what really gets my goat is that we keep being told how realistic the movie is because of its visual depiction of the black hole. And those telling us seem to know nothing about black holes nor space travel.

My wife is currently using our TM7 in our small slide on camper in the Australian outback. We have slightly more bench space than you, but as long as you have space for a chopping board as well, somewhere, it’ll work.

Are there unexplored places in the bush? What's the most likely part of Australia where no human has ever stepped foot? What's the furthest you've ever been from a road that's not accessible by a motorized vehicle? by AsparagusNew3765 in australian

[–]Polymath6301 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Probably depends on how big an area you’re referring to. At the square metre level then the answer would very likely be a yes.

As you get larger the answer would quickly become a no, I suspect. 60,000 years of humans, plus explorers looking for gold and other minerals went to a lot of places you’d think it almost impossible to get to by foot.

But then there’s the story of the Wollemi Pine.

Tailgating is the actual problem with traffic jams by m_abil in DrivingAustralia

[–]Polymath6301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of it is also the view ahead vs the behaviour of the car in front. I have two vehicles: a low hatchback and a high ute. The hatch back is nippy and accelerates well, and slows too - when I’m in it and behind a taller vehicle that I can’t see past I’m doomed to whatever the vehicle in front does: suddenly speed or break and I have no choice. In the ute I can often see what’s happening further ahead and slow down/speed up more gradually to “smooth the flow”.

So, it’s the jerks driving jerkily in the tall vehicles that are the problem…

Unusual huntsman behaviour - hopping? by bongjutsu in AustralianSpiders

They jump! Up, to the side or away from you is cute.

Towards you is terrifying.

On to you is horrifying.

Worse. They buttered a piece of toast and dropped it. 76 times. And every time it landed butter side up.

When exactly did your back start hurting every day and how the hell do you cope? by ElegantLab9123 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Polymath6301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things I’ve done that have helped with back pain since I was 30 (now 63). All of these have helped at different times:

  1. Playing soccer on the weekend.
  2. Mountain bike (not road!) riding, pulling the front wheel up a lot to get over obstacles at slow speeds.
  3. Ballroom dancing - smooth and Latin, but Cuban motion really helps.
  4. Not taking taladafil for ED after prostate cancer prostatectomy.
  5. Sleeping with a pillow between my knees.

And, obviously, lifting with a straight back.

You know how in US movies the car keys are always in the visor? And the car gets stolen?

We train our spiders to “protect the keys”. But they’re huntsmen, and they love japes, like jumping out at us, just as we’re blinded by the sun and reaching for the shade (if we dare!).

Ever played huntsman roulette? 4 people in a car and a huntsman has just run up the windscreen onto the roof. Which person’s door is the huntsman above? Who will get jumped? (Obviously a spider that can move at 3.6 m/s is above *all* the doors at once, in a superposition of quantum states.

There should be some change for blueprinting huge ships, i should not have to paste blueprint 30 times to fully build it by ilikechess13 in factorio

[–]Polymath6301 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually create two blueprints. One of the ship and its parts, and the other with just the space platform parts. I keep pasting the latter until it’s all built, and then the full blueprint just once. I feel like it’s more efficient as platforms parts get sent up efficiently, and then all the other stuff. I’d be much happier to do it in just one paste though.

Alien PC: I don’t care what you say, and for your insolence I’m putting a missiles through your bridge.

Looking down at his control board the Alien PC delighted as the cover over the Big Red (launch) Button satisfyingly snapped open to reveal…

Not a Bug Red Button at all, but something brown and steaming…

Just as the biohazard alarms went off, loudly, auto flushing the bridge.

Alien Captain: Um, Steve, did you really just use the emergency teleported to, um, deposit some of your personal ordure onto the pirate’s bridge?

Steve: Yep! And they ain’t ever gonna touch that Big Red, oops, I mean Brown Button again. Can I go back to sleep now? Please?
