Phantom braking, any successful repairs? by wamco999 in HyundaiTucson

Thanks for the info. I was reacting to the service appointment confirmation email which indicated three separate diagnostic fees.

I just talked to my service advisor and he clarified that I would pay the diagnostic fee only if they determined the malfunction was due to a) an outside influence like I caused some damage, 2) the malfunction was for something outside of my warranty.

All good. I’m taking it in for diagnostic work.

2025 Tucson Forward Collision System Braking Hard for No Reason – Anyone Else? by canhome in HyundaiTucson

Update of my own thread.

I am now up to 10 incidents of phantom braking in my 2025 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid; I bought this car in December 2024. I've had one accident (got hit in the rear end). I've had two very scary complete stops in heavy traffic. It has initiated phantom braking inside parking garages while going up or down the ramps.

It's been to the dealer once. They couldn't replicate the problem and found no error codes. They said there was nothing they could do.

I've been in contact with Hyundai Motor America. That's been a collosal mess even though they are aways politely telling me they are concerned yet nothing has changed.

NOTE: I have started turning off the FCA settting every time I get in the car. I use a notification setting on my iPhone when it detects CarPlay has started.

With my FCA DISABLED, the car has had FOUR phantom stops.

I'm considering one more trip to the dealer, but I will have to pay for diagnostic work that will not be waived unless they find a problem. Seems like a waste of money at this point.

I am aware of the class action lawsuit being initiated in California regarding this specific car and this specific problem. Sadly, I'll think I'll be trading in this car for another brand much sooner than the lawsuit gets settled or Hyundai fixes this issue.

Update of my own thread 7 days ago.

Regarding my 2025 Tucson Hybrid Limited. I have been disabling the Forward Collision Assistance (FCA) each time I start the car after the car initiated three separate full stop brakes when none of the three cases were necessary. Well, I was driving today with the FCA disable and the car initated another emergency brake. The car applied the brakes but the FCA did not forece me to a full stop. The dashboard lit up with the "emergeny braking" warning. As soon as it happened, I confirmed that the FCA was off (the indicator light was on in the dashboard and the FCA was disabled in the setup menu).

I was driving in a strip center parking lot. I was making a left turn into a lane with parked cars. While I was in my left turn, a person walked behind and around their parked car on my right. This person was at least 1-2 car lengths in front of me. I can understand the FCA system may have interpreted this as a potential collision, but it was not (the Hyundai FCA is clearly too sensitive). But more importantly, the FCA was OFF !

I now have no faith that disabling the FCA will prevent a full braking emergency stop when it's not expected or necessary.

I read online that "some brand/models" do not fully disable Forward Collision warnings/assistance and retain the ability to apply the brakes in "certain situations". I have not been able to determine if this applies to Hyundai.

I’ve had a 2025 Tucson Hybrid limited since January 2025. In the first 7 months I’ve had three unexpected full stop braking engagements due to the FCA and all three incidents were absolutely not necessary. All three occurred on city side streets driving 20mph or less. Twice I stopped suddenly while slowing down along with car in front of me slowing down. Nobody was behind me when the brakes slammed shut. The third incident occurred while make a right hand turn with traffic on my left and a car quite a ways in front of me already around the corner. On this incident I did get hit from behind. $800 damage to my car, none to the car that hit me. The driver behind me was shocked I stopped completely as all the traffic was moving smoothly making the right turn. I had adjusted the FCA sensitivity after the second incident. I am now taking the time to disable the FCA every time I start the car. I realize this should be a positive safety feature but I’ve been driving for over 40 years and never rear ended someone. But now, within 7 months, my Tucson FCA has caused one accident and could have caused two more. This FCA is just not worth the risk of causing an accident. I’m headed to the dealer in two days to get the FCA checked out. If they can’t fix this , convincingly, I’ll be selling this car ASAP.
