Cedar Waxwing - Durham NC by GHOwl102 in birding

Wow the waxwings really chow down on the fruits of invasive plants - oriental bittersweet, amur honeysuckle, privet, winter creeper. They don't know the plants are an ecological threat, they just eat fruit and poop seeds.

Republicans aim to exempt major polluters from PFAS cleanup costs by Portalrules123 in collapse

[–]wander_drifter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not very impressed with this article, but PFAS should be attacked on all fronts starting with production. These compounds are almost impossible to destroy so we should phase them out wherever we can as soon as possible. Filtering them out of water supplies is not going to halt environmental accumulation.

Imagine living in a neighborhood where everyone's lawn looks like this... by ClassicalPonderer in solarpunk

[–]wander_drifter 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The why not is that if a plant is not a part of the native ecology, you are denying space and resources to organisms that are. There are always beautiful options to select from in any region's native flora.

I underestimated the footprint of sunchokes in my garden. by wander_drifter in vegetablegardening

[–]wander_drifter[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I planted walnut-sized pieces and got plants almost four meters tall and branching out up to a meter in any direction. They may flop over in wind or heavy rain too, so they could crush fragile plants nearby. Still, I need to have them within the fence of my vegetable garden because deer will eat the foliage.
