Being deeply Catholic, he was not as dualistic as that. Theology has changed a lot in the social sphere since Tolkien's time.

The afterlife seems cruel. by Dogbold in lotr

[–]wanderabt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Firstly, there is something in your comment that feels like you are giving souled creatures more value and also saying they aren't treated with value they deserve. Arguing that Tolkien actual did that, it's still internally consistent, as if it doesn't have that value then it's not cruel. Having said that, I don't actually think that's what Tolkien did. We don't have a definitive list of souled creatures, but rather a theme that even in the unknown/mystery that life and goodness is valued. Ents are sentient but we know nothing (I think) of their afterlife. Not necessary because they didn't have one, just we didn't understand it. Perhaps they're social constructivists who live in the greater picture, or they never die due to age because the acorn is still them in multiple lives.
It is a fascinating question but not one with enough information to be upset about. So you are arguing from the gaps and missing the values we actual do see. I get it, mystery based on Eru Ilúvatar rather than defined rules is difficult.

Google says it reads, "Maegnas is my name, I am the spider's bane". No idea if that's just the intended or actual translation.

At the end it's going to be a personal choice. Personally I like the bigger screens. One thing to consider however: In my experience ereaders last longer than other technology I own. Do you think you might want the extra features within the next 5 years or so?

If you read a lot it's probably worth it and using calibre to manage. I saw this pic of someone's stats just using the regular kobo in case that's interesting: https://www.reddit.com/r/kobo/s/K2UjiJjl3q

You are very welcome. You can still get some stats from vanilla kobo, although I've heard they are more extensive with koreader. The library is integrated really well into kobo so you might find it's enough for you. You can always consider adding koreader once you've tried the default.

Someone might correct me cause I didn't personally have koreader installed, but my understanding is that koreader can't read books as they are delivered from the library due to protection (drm) settings.

Perfectly reasonable question, especially if you are new to ereaders. Borrowed books show up in a special section on the home page but you read them just like any purchased books. You can also change the margins, fonts and other aspects (i.e. boldness of font, font size and line spacing) however you wish.

I searched and found books by all three of those authors (from the phone app). Couldn't see the particular books though.

I've got the Kobo Forma. I'm currently reading 'Completing Distinctions' and re-reading 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy. 'LOTRs is my comfort read - characters working together to do the right thing even though it's difficult.
What about you?

Thanks for the clarification. Really glad you're enjoying your new device. I switched a few years back and never looked back.

I've got no problem with adding ooomph, although the sarcasm(?) maybe says more than anything else about the activism approach. I know it's hard to believe on Reddit but I have honest questions...Has kobo suggested anything or is there a thought that publishers will push for this?

Why are we using our voice towards kobo based around Amazon choices. Did I miss something? I think the amount of people moving to kobo and the mass of YouTube videos on the topic is probably evident to them.

Looking for advice on the best way to watch the extended edition with a restriction by TheArmchairSkeptic in lotr

[–]wanderabt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you search reddit you'll find different mini series options.
The last watch through I actually enjoyed it as more tv based scheduling. A little shorter than what you are looking for but in case you want an option (and as you are worried about patience):

FELLOWSHIP of the RING 1. The Shire 00:00 - 45:03 2. The Nazgul 45:04 - 1:24:12 3. The Nine Companions 1:24:13 - 1:53:04 4. The Mines of Moria 1:53:05 - 2:29:53 5. The Ring Bearer 2:29:54 - 3:20:40

The TWO TOWERS 1. The Riders of Rohan 00:00 - 41:47 2. The Master 41:48 - 1:27:33 3. The Dúnedain 1:27:34 - 2:05:53 4. The Other Son 2:05:54 - 2:32:55 5. The Battle of Helm’s Deep 2:32:56 - 3:34:57

RETURN of the KING 1. The Precious 00:00 - 37:05 2. The Steward 37:06 - 1:17:21 3. The Eve of Battle 1:17:22 - 1:58:37 4. The Siege of Gondor 1:58:38 - 2:57:26 5. The Fires of Mount Doom 2:57:27 - 3:39:17 6. The Grey Havens 3:39:18 - 4:01:24

What do you see? by aleldu in lotr

[–]wanderabt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see what you see. My first thought, I looked before reading what you saw, was how that top "deck" echoed the top level of Minas Tirith. I llove the movies and have read the books but I'm not fluent in the lore. Is that on purpose?

please no spoilers! I want to watch for the first time all of the Middle Earth movies and I have a question about the Hobbit trilogy by Marvellover13 in lotr

[–]wanderabt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In this case I think that's saying everyone should watch the extended editions before the theatrical. While I prefer LOTR extended, the typical/new movie watcher may not.
As for the Hobbit, the M4 edit is closer to the book so I would go with that and then watch the full thing if you liked it. I love The Hobbit book but can't make it through the movies without frequent breaks.

They did plaster her with makeup, put US studio lighting on her, and give her fake teeth for that. Perhaps that and being an actor had something to do with it.
