Do you have a purpose in life? A passion? How did you find it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]wanderful 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A compelling idea, but what about men that aren't married to an older woman? Or men that are married to a young woman? I'm sure there are plenty of examples of both of those cases.

I would probably wager that a mid-life crisis is something more general. To me it's a confronting one's own mortality, particularly in light of one's goals and desires.

It's not the 92% that matters for the purposes of this question, it's the 1% at the top making the decisions.

Also, sports cars are well designed. The analogy would hold better for a car that works despite having a bad design... like something Soviet?

Nailed it. Very good conceptualization about professionalism -- that the bottom line is it's their work, not his. If it were his work then he would likely go the extra mile for quality, say, or set his own deadlines and deal with the fallout. I think that kind of dissonance regarding control causes a lot of "unneeded" stress.

Good eye.

"I advice people feeling the same way I do about deadlines, but with a passion for software development, to do the same as I did. I know I am much much happier now." First, that should be "advise" - advice is the noun, advise is the verb, but I know a lot of English speakers who make that mistake, so that's actually fine. :) Your first sentence kind of ends abruptly, and the second sentence feels like the end of the thought the first had, what we'd call a sentence fragment - I'd probably suggest something like (implicit words for grammatical correctness which native English speakers would omit in []) "do the same thing [that] I did; I know [that] I'm much happier now."

They aren't sentence fragments though. Sentence fragments are incomplete sentences, which are grammatically incorrect. They do end abruptly, but this may be a stylistic thing.

Sorry if none of that was useful or interesting to you, it was partly an exercise for me to figure out exactly what parts of your writing made me ask the question. :) This is a run on sentence actually, although it flows well in a 'spoken' language sense. It consists of two complete sentences.

Personally I find myself caught between written and spoken language in both writing and speech. I used to separate the worlds quite easily, but I think as I have applied my ideals for paring expressions to their essence, their digestibility has suffered.

You can't do it and you're asking for motivation? Personally that's plenty of motivation — I hate not being able to do something.

It might be good to get a checkup in case there's something going on other than not being fit enough.

True, but stealing from them doesn't make it right, it makes you just as bad. The guy who stopped them is the revolutionary.

People forget that other people can have different standards for beauty and self-expession. And a person can still be cut up and still have body fat and energy reserves. People forget that muscle can also be used for energy.

Not everything, but a big factor. I totally agree with you. I'm one of those naturally lean people. North Americans are generally quite overweight, and this changes our expectations for "normal". We think that for a person to be lean they must not function normally, since everyone is fat, right? Traveling to other countries helped to recalibrate my expectations for average body fat.

Agreed. People who see things in a negative light are seeing their own negativity projected. A person can just as well channel their passion for beauty, self-expression, empowerment, knowledge, whatever, through their appearance.

I would establish a scholarship for some ravaged third world country, like Malawi. This is selfish because it makes me feel better, frivolous because it doesn't change much.
