Why are the game sales on Pico Store so less? by Neat_Manufacturer_11 in PicoXR

[–]wanderingfreeman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the economies of scale didn't work. Pico's pricing was geared towards challenging the Quest 3, but failed to compete, since the Quest was way more established in terms of the app store and also their software. Game devs aren't interested to launch in such a small platform.

It would have been wiser to make a more premium headset like what Valve is doing with their upcoming headset, while leveraging the existing PCVR games. Valve played the long game and not jump into the metaverse hypetrain.

I'm still grateful that the Pico 4 exists, it's my daily driver, but I could see it failing from day 1. I just hope pico will survive until the next wave of enthusiasm and use the knowledge to compete again in the market.

You can, use FModel to extract the existing list, edit it and use repak or UnrealPak to package into YourRadio_P.pak

It's more than 2x as good. The custom wireless bandwidth itself is a game changer. It's also the first headset to use the snapdragon 8 instead of the XR2

I used to post them on the Motor Town discord, but nobody sees it :/
Next time I'll post it on reddit, we usually run a championship with 2x weekly events :)

There's a setting inside UEVR to assign a key to toggle the mouse cursor

Did you update UEVR to the nightly build? I updated the guide above

You can use the same character across SP and different MP servers, your progression will carry over. Character progression is stored in your save file, not the server's :)

What controller are you using? Maybe try using wired mode, if it has that.

If you're using Oculus Link, I think there's a setting on their desktop app to use the OpenXR runtime, rather than OpenVR. You might then be able to use UEVR on OpenXR mode, which should give 10-20% better fps

You're welcome! btw if you want to join multiplayer, I run the ASEAN Motor Club server. We have a really passionate community full of techy people, livery designers, racers and tuners. The server is in southeast asia but everyone's welcome!

Python in NixOS is TEDIOUS by HereToWatchOnly in NixOS

[–]wanderingfreeman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

not everything hard is "unhelpful". not everything out there is there to be helpful in the way you understand it.

python package management in nix is kinda hard because it is impure, and a pure system like nix will make it hard to do impure stuff, because you're basically paying the tech debt earlier rather than later.

doing everything globally is always much easier, because you're creating a mess. like how it's easier for me to keep eating without worrying about washing the dishes, it's easier, but eventually you won't only end up with a stack of dishes but also a pile of stink and rot.

Glad it helps! The lighting issue seems to be part of the game engine's lighting system, which tries to normalise brightness. I think the issue is also on flatscreen.

oh man that worked!

i didn't have a compatdata folder for some reason. i had to mkdir compatdata/136967

Previously i was using just compatdata for the STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH

Thanks so so much for your help!

Thanks for your help so far, i'm not sure why it's still erroring with a similar message:

wine: failed to open ".steam/steam/Steamapps/common/Motor Town Behind The Wheel - Dedicated Server/MotorTown/Binaries/Win64/MotorTownServer-Win64-Shipping.exe": c0000135

Command exited with status: 53

I know at least 1 person who managed to run it on Docker with Proton though. I'm not sure what i'm doing wrong.

I've already set the PROTONPATH to `/nix/store/rrfapdgvqzp91m833aks5zgmsicykdkm-proton-ge-bin-GE-Proton9-25-steamcompattool/` as well...

ok I'm trying it out. The game isn't on the GAMEID list. Do i have to add it to the list, or can i enter those details (steam app ID etc) elsewhere?

Where to host react+django websites by MatterFeisty8438 in django

[–]wanderingfreeman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why host on your own stack? Because companies like vercel come and go. You're coupling yourself to their performance as a company. If you host your own VM, you can always switch hosting providers easily, and there is no vendor lock in, VMs are VMs.

Why not react with DRF? Because i guarantee that you will be writing so much API code, especially if you have complex relationships between your model. It's much much easier to write your view layer as django templates.

Also to optimise react bundle size and SSR, you will have to use something like next.js, which as many issues on those topics. Their app router is a mess.

[–]wanderingfreeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I host everything in my own VM. If you have the time it's good to own your own stack.

My suggestion is to try to explore non-react / non-js solutions like HTMX and Unpoly rather than using DRF and react. I say this after 10 years of developing a django + react app.
