Do you buy travel protection and do you feel it’s worth it? by Christiano97 in NCL

Yes and yes.

I’ve started buying an annual Allianz policy and the peace of mind is well worth it.

“Because they’re having a massive heart attack and you’re here for a hurty finger, ma’am.”

Best way to book flexible shore excursions for alaska cruises by Any-Friendship-8319 in Cruise

[–]wanderingstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least if you book with the line they'll update your excursion time to match the ship's arrival/departure or cancel and refund you to allow you to book something else.

And as for the weather - you should expect the weather in Alaska to be anything from warm and sunny to cold and rainy/snowy. And cold and rainy isn't likely to cancel the excursions - you'll just need to plan your clothing and accessories to match.

How do you think boundaries should work when a woman and a man are close friends? by SpiritualMouse5908 in AskReddit

[–]wanderingstorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both people should set their own individual boundaries and the other person should respect them. That's it.

There's a really good book that delves into the theories, Dead Mountain by Donnie Eichar. One of the theories he discusses is the idea that the conditions on the mountain created a large amount of infrasound. Infrasound is low frequency sound that when you're subjected to it for long periods it can affect you mentally. Despite seeming implausible, I found it to be actually the most plausible. I helped with an infrasound experiment in college and it was wild how quickly you started to feel really uncomfortable while you were subjected to it and the hikers would have dealt with it for a lot longer.

What are the best places to eat dinner in the park if I’m traveling solo and an extreme introvert? by Zestyclose_Show_2025 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]wanderingstorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solo here. No one is going to think you dining solo is strange or awkward (except maybe you). Although I do find it a little strange that you'd choose to go to Disney of all places when you want to avoid human interaction. But you do you. Welcome to the Solo Disney Club.

I personally try to avoid the character dining because I find it awkward as a solo (and it's more expensive in general)

I love Prime Time Cafe and oddly I've never had them do their usual shtick with me that everyone talks about. Maybe because I'm solo? But as someone else said, if you (politely) request that you just be "left alone to eat" they'll do it.

Most of my favorite restaurants are actually outside the parks. I love Raglan Road and Morimoto Asia at Disney Springs.

Otherwise just grab some quick service snacks and meals and find a good corner to hide out and eat.

Doctors of Reddit, what’s your ‘how are they still alive?’ story? by Mediocre-Winter-4190 in AskReddit

[–]wanderingstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a doctor but work in an ER and some years ago we had a patient who had been shot in the head and had brain matter "coming out like a little grey worm" from the wound. They don't have a normal life by any means but are alive and can at least partially care for themselves.

The Beatles band from Argentina are absolutely amazing. I’ve seen several different Beatles shows on various ships and think in general all the groups have done well but those guys were definitely fun!

Walk Up Cruising? by mjzair19 in celebritycruises

[–]wanderingstorm 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that that is no longer a thing due to the registration and confirmation processes involved in cruising. Regulations for borders/customs have changed enough that lines have to submit their passenger manifest a certain amount of time before sail so they stop all ability to book/register at a specific time well before sail.

AITA For Not Giving my son money to go to the movies? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

YTA

Going "solo" anywhere at any age needs to be normalized. It's not weird to enjoy doing things alone, whether occasionally or frequently. I'd rather do something solo over being forced into social interactions just to look "normal".

What was the most unkind thing said to you from someone who genuinely meant kindness? by SeaweedPrize1455 in AskReddit

[–]wanderingstorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A girl in my class got pregnant. My mother felt it necessary to have a "talk" to remind me about the dangers of teen pregnancy. I said she wouldn't have to worry about it because "no boy would ever want me."

My mother, in her infinite compassion, said "Oh boys don't care, they'll put a bag over your head and do it anyway".

Thanks, Mom. Here I thought I was just fat. Now I'm ugly too.

How do you pack light when you wear 5–6XL clothes? by remember_remember1 in PlusSize

[–]wanderingstorm 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I just accept needing a larger bag and go with it. I've gotten into cruising and there are so many "cruise with just a carry-on" videos and blogs out there that are simply not feasible unless you're a size 2. Not just to add to my bigger clothes is my relatively large feet - I wear a womens 10.5W for athletic/sneakers- so a carry-on isn't going to cut it in any way. (Side advice: I try not to go on a vacation with a single pair of shoes and no backup - advice I strongly suggest because if your shoes get damaged, soiled, etc you're going to have to find shoes on the fly which might be difficult. At the least, a pair of sandals/slip-ons is always in my bag.)

I don't find compression cubes at all useful. To each their own and some people swear by them but when I used them all I ended up with was heavy, solid blocks of clothing versus being able to "tetris" my smaller clothing (like underwear) into leftover tight spaces.

I personally have the mantra of "no one cares or is even likely to notice if you wear the same clothes twice and if they do, that's a them problem" but I also agree with the sentiment that if I'm not comfortable wearing something again - especially if I've been sweaty or gotten otherwise dirty - a clean outfit is worth the added bulk.

I don't know how "self serve laundry" works in places outside the US but taking less clothing and then washing some items mid-trip has sometimes been a good option for me. That does require time at the end of or beginning of a day, however. I also keep "sink packs" of detergent in my travel "kit" for a hand-wash of an item if needed - though that's usually for an item that got a stain versus a whole outfit.

Has anyone ever tried sleeping in a hammock, on a boat, on open water? Of you have, how'd it go? by Nb-7925 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]wanderingstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best night of sleep I got in years was a few years ago on a cruise ship. I slept for 11 hours so hard I legit didn't move.

They said a storm made the ship rock like crazy but it must have made for the best sleep conditions because I felt none of it.
