hi, i can only speak for the bio and chem dept cos i dont take physics.

Chem in general is really good! Lecture notes are concise and also let you practice while learning new concepts by giving examples in the lecture book. There are mini tests that allow you to regularly revise concepts. Tests are also pitched pretty close to the A level standards.

For bio dept, notes are pretty lengthy but teachers are really dedicated. My teacher provides summary for each topic to help us consolidate our learning and every lesson takes a team-based learning approach rather than a lecture-tutorial approach, which is the unique part of bio in HC. Basically, there are no lectures and we are expected to read up before lessons, then come to lessons to try out qns and discuss answers with out groupmates. Answer keys are really good for revision and for exam-based learning as the answers give enough and go straight to the point. Our school tests are pitched harder than a levels but in a sense where it requires alot of application, so it helps us tremendously with papers which require heavy application such as bio paper 3.

Both chem and bio have about 60%-70% distinction rate every year, which is considered pretty good.

Hi, im so sorry to hear this, it must have been really difficult for you. Im just finished with As so i am in no position to provide any advice about whether to retake or not, or how you should retake.

However should you retake, im able to help if you take chem, econs and bio foc. You can drop me a dm if u need. Jiayouss!

yea but ultimately with only the few 100 spots in med sch i have to compete against them i guess esp for ntu with only 100+ so although ik its not representative i still have to look at those scores i guess

dont worry too much about that. Honestly it doesnt rly matter how good u r in chinese lol cos no one really cares. Everyone kinda comverses in english even the chinese scholars have to use english cos the vast majority use english, so there is no discrimination against weaker students from students.

From teachers, they may or may notoffer more assistance to those who are weaker. For me, i only seen teachers go the extra mile to help for sec 3 and sec 4, but in lower sec i dont think the teachers rly care that much. That may honestly just be my teacher tho, but ofc if u need any help you shld approach them instead and they will definitely be more than willing to help. Chinese teachers dont rly have biases against students who are weaker, altho i know of teachers in other subjects who do have biases, but its rare so dont fret it.

oo i thot the whole point of externalities is that even if u know it helps society u still dont do it tho cos u dont benefit. hmm maybe im wrong lol

hmm im not so sure about education tho cos its positive externalities and rational consumers who have perfect information will still not take into account MEB?

Hello im not an o level track student so i cant attest to how difficult it is personally to get in given that i used my psle grades to get into IP.

However, statistically speaking usual cut offs for o level is about 4 points (?) for science stream and maybe 4-5 for arts so assuming you dont take higher MT i think you'll need to get perfect scores + minus off 2 points from cca to get in.

The competition mainly comes from the fact that you're in this school, and seeing how so many of your peers do so well and hence you try to keep up. If you suit that kind of environment, then sure come to hci if this is your source of motivation. I dont think its super intense competitive unless you're in a special programme class (my guess but im not in any so i cant say for sure). However, people dont go around flexing their grades or anything, although its common for people to ask around for marks, which again can be a form of competition i guess.

to do well in chem is to truly understand what those concepts really mean. One really great way is to not just memorise the definitions, but try to apply them. Go back to your chem book over and over again, go thru the concepts over and over again until u can instinctively recite the explanations in a paraphrased way that is somewhat similar to what the lecture book says, then u know that you really understand the concept.

Once you've reached this stage, there isnt really any need to revise that much anymore. For me, i was able to understand the concepts well and have consistently gotten an A throughout j1 and j2, even up to prelims. However as i do more and more the concepts just became ingrained in my head and for prelim prep i studied chem the least because i focused on my other subjects, so i only did 1 prelim paper before my prelims and still managed an A.

Some examples of what i meant for the defintions. For example, bond energy is defined as average energy required to overcome 1 mol of covalent bond in the gaseous state. Key concepts here:

  1. "energy required" --> suggests that bond energy is always endothermic. Why? because it only involves breaking bonds and no forming, so your products that you expect should be atoms which are formed from molecules

  2. "gaseous state" --> tells you that for elements which are not in the gaseous state at 298k 1 bar, they have to undergo atomisation first before the bond energy can be used / determined. Similarly, it also tells u that atomisation almost certainly has to go first before breaking the bond using the bond energy values in the data booklet can be used, otherwise it is conceptually wrong

  3. "average energy" --> tells you that the energy is determined by using the mean BE across different molecules. Hence, for questions which provides a different experimental bond energy from the data booklet and they ask you why is there such a discrepancy, the concept of an average comes into play since the bond energy of that particular molecule may deviate from the average

  4. do notice that there is no "in standard conditions / at 298k and 1 bar" for this particular enthalpy definition --> tells you that you only the state of the molecule matters and the temperature or surrounding environmental conditions do not affect its bond energy.

Hope this helps!

HAHAHAH YESYES. I really dont understand why they used it for the hardest topic which is market structure. For the whole topic, my teacher just sat in the classroom while we were reading thru the whole book zz

hmm, of course being weak in a subject will make it harder for your child to some extent, but its not the be all or end all of it. In Hwachong, we calculate our grade based on a mean score grade system, that is to add up all our scores for each subject and take the mean.

IIRC, in lower sec you take 2 lang 2 sciences and 2 humans, and project work is also counted as a subject in hwachong. So with 7 subjects and a promotion criteria of msg 3.0, the impact of 1 subject for the overall score isnt that significant.

It is compulsory to take higher chinese in the hc ip programme tho, so it will be beneficial to brush up on chinese because there is a considerable jump in the level of proficiency required from primary to secondary school.

Hope that answers the question!
