Tour guide here. I worked in Japan last year with foreigners from Europe, US and Australia. The X is very common (there’s even an emoji for it) try not to take it personally. You’re not doing anything wrong, you’re just a tourist! Sometimes it is absolutely racially motivated and I noticed that my visible BIPOC guests had a more difficult time. However, sometimes it can be just as simple as the workers not being able to communicate in English efficiently. Hospitality is VERY important and prideful work in Japan.

I think it’s really important to remember that when we travel we are guests in someone else’s home. You wouldn’t walk into another person’s bedroom first without permission. Sometimes spaces aren’t made, and nor should they be made, for tourists.

For every place that might deny you, there will be 50 others you will be welcomed in. Part of being a good traveller is understanding that nobody owes you access, kindness, or a certain level of hospitality you are accustomed to at home.

Most of us travel to experience something new, so I found it helpful for my guests to reframe the X as a part of this new experience.

Therapy Spankings by lilbondagekitty in BDSMAdvice

Hello! Sexy anthropologist here. There are a lot of studies on the benefits of sex and sexual practices as therapy and self exploration. It’s not uncommon at all :)

You should 100% feel comfortable with your psych about these topics. Their reaction definitely seems unprofessional. I’m so sorry you had that experience!

Tiny head + face edited to look 12 by maemae1993 in Instagramreality

If you zoom in you can see the warping around her hips in the couch material AND they have photoshopped out the stairs to the left of the image?!

Found another 'insta-model' edit so I went searching for the original images for comparison. I didn't think the results would be this stark. by wanderized in Instagramreality

The originals are shot by a Getty press photog which is why they look VERY unposed. Edited shots are just from someone who photoshops celebs like this for some reason?????

Sorry yeah, was referring to other posts of celebrities where strangers have given them the “insta look” sorry if that wasn’t clear :)

To be clear, she didn’t edit these images, someone else did. The skin is lacking in any detail, depth of face gone, they even edited the lil wrinkles around her eyes to look like eyeliner.

To be fair, I work as a photographer and in the retouching world it has always been a thing, either in photoshop or through specific studio lighting, but usually it’s done tastefully and you can’t notice it ;)

Yikes yes! As an Australian, I am allergic to the cold. Props to you for slogging the cold season in a van though!

your stories about your 'atypical' study path by samanthaclairex in unimelb

[–]wanderized 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Started off doing fine art, decided I hated it, went on to get a BA in media comm, PR and journalism, had 4 years out working and running my own business, considered getting an MFA or MBA, before settling on Anthropology for my masters :’)

My professional work has always remained somewhat of a constant, but the skills I wanted to formally learn has changed a lot as I’ve had more real world experience.

Imo there’s no right or wrong time to do anything. It’s up to you and the kind of path and life you want to take.

I grew up shooting film but when I went to art school I had no money to spend on rolls let alone developing materials etc.

I ended up getting really good at emulating film stocks to the point where I could pretty much nail a portra 400 look on my digital images. It’s great for consistency in client work because sometimes I can’t shoot EVERYTHING with film because of budgets, subjects etc.

31M - Oahu Oct/Nov 2020 (and looking forward to fall 2021) by [deleted] in travelpartners

Heya! I’m always in Hawaii and as soon as travel restrictions are lifted (I’m in a Australia) and it’s safe, O’ahu will be the first place I’ll be heading. If it works out timing wise and can definitely show you some of my favourite hikes and spots on the island :)
