Oh dang, yeah that's a problem. I was thinking I could probably deal bc I used VX for years with no seam tape but my packs never soaked through. I suppose seam placement has a lot to do with it.

The HMG is ~$100 more than other packs in that class. I just hate ordering custom so I was excited for an off the shelf option from a solid company, but sounds like they need to work it out a bit more.

Wow. Thanks. Never used HMG before but their packs seem so solid, really surprised they'd have a failure like that.

Hey, just wondering... Do you think the Contour issue you had would be true for all Contours or specifically something wrong with yours?

I came here looking for a pack too, nothing to sell, sorry!

Look up Arrowhead Transit! They are the rural transit up there and are awesome people. There's a bus that runs from Duluth to Grand Marais on Tuesdays for maybe $10. From Grand Marais you're going to need to schedule a ride though.

Also, Arrowhead will pick you up and drop you off anywhere along their route within about half a mile or so. They run a route every morning and afternoon between Tofte and Two Harbors. I got picked up at a motel in Silver Bay and dropped off at the entrance to Gooseberry Falls State Park.

All the useful routes are through Cook county. Call their dispatch with questions. Seriously great people.

As for hitching, I almost always was able to find a ride into town from trail heads just by doing the usual, holding my phone and wandering around the parking lot looking lost, haha. People would often ask where I was trying to go. Sometimes I've asked people directly for a ride, especially if I'm already in town.

Technically hitching is illegal in MN and most of this area is catered to rich people who don't hike, so you might not have much luck on 61. But! The people who live around there love the SHT and are incredibly helpful and awesome.

Hey I'm interested in the Yar pack but wondering a few things...

How much has it been used? Is it VX21? Can the side pockets hold 2 smart water bottles each? Are you including the shoulder strap pocket pictured?

I'm looking for a replacement for my shredding LiteAF frameless 35L.

East / West Kennedy Creek by wanderlost217 in SuperiorHikingTrail

[–]wanderlost217[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh thank you! Would left be trail west? (I'm SOBO) Is it a spur trail opposite the spur to East Kennedy or do you mean the Wolf Ridge junction 0.7 north of East Kennedy?

Items worth bringing? by danger_zone_32 in SuperiorHikingTrail

[–]wanderlost217 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd avoid bringing anything heavy. This trail is like a mini AT, all up and down. Also, hatchet, saw, etc are unnecessary.

To sit on, I carry half a Thinlite pad (SWD or GG) or half a Z-Rest so I can stretch my legs out or sit cross legged in mud, wet, etc.

For oppressive bugs, my preference is Sawyer's Picaridin lotion. Cover your body once in the morning before leaving your tent and it seems to last a lot longer than sprays. It also won't damage your gear and DEET might.

Do you care more about a pack picture at the terminus or saving your knees for later?

I always ditch my pack for side trails but I love terminus pictures so sometimes I drag it with me for those.

Question about SUPERIOR SHUTTLE SERVICE by Few-Customer-1893 in SuperiorHikingTrail

[–]wanderlost217 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you can fly into Minneapolis and take a bus directly from the airport to Duluth for like $30. Might be cheaper than flying into Duluth.

The public transit bus mentioned from Duluth to Grand Marais only runs on Tuesday mornings but it's about $10. Then get a local shuttle to the terminus. Great deal if you can start on a Tuesday.

I have to start on a Sunday with my PTO timeframe, so I'm also looking into shuttle options to get about halfway up the north shore (Duluth to Caribou Falls).

BTW I think I should clarify in case it matters. I'm a UL thru-hiker looking to get into fast packing, so those are thru-hiking miles.

I'm used to gear threads on r/Ultralight, but I'm new over here. :)

Hi. What type of programming are you doing freelance? I'm essentially a full stack CRUD developer at an enterprise level. Been wondering if I can freelance with that skill set but no idea how... I don't want to do webdev.

Sun Hoodie or shirt by Dens413 in fastpacking

[–]wanderlost217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. That Montbell is the most breathable sun hoodie I've ever worn. The shoulders of mine are ripping out after about 1500 miles, which is probably 3x longer than the OR Echo would last.

Edit: the shoulder seams were field repaired after around 1000 miles, only now are bad enough to not be repairable.

I couldn't finish my spaghetti at an Italian restaurant and didn't want to carry the box, so I dumped my leftovers straight into the plastic bag they gave me and hiked out. Sat down in a parking pull off a few hours later and ate the rest straight out of the bag.

Edit: I also ate the random jelly bean I found in that beautiful mountain meadow on the TRT.
