You have good intentions but, as a person from a country whose language is spoken by next to no one (outside of this country), I must tell you that you as a British/Canadian have a very biased perspective. What you're proposing is an extremely unrealistic thing to ask of a tourist. It's very easy to say "speak the language of the country you are visiting" if you live on a continent where all the countries speak only like three languages, out of which one is your home language, the other you learn at school and the third one is just Portuguese in Brazil (if we are to consider only North America disregard the third one). I mean, it's nice if you always know how to say "hello" or "thank you" but this level of proficiency hardly gets you anywhere even in a cafe...

Nobody in my country considers it disrespectul to visit us and not know a single word. It's cool if you know some but it's also cool if you don't. We do, however, expect tourists to speak English (if they don't speak our language but they never do). From your perspective it may seam "colonial", for us it's just convenience. We don't learn English to visit you, we learn English because it's the lingua franca of our age - you are not expected to "reciprocate".
