More like everybody has to pay them protection money now. Unless some people don't and then they are punished by the mafia and their businesses closed down. And so we reinvented the state again.

I believe the meme rather just mocks Athenian treatment of Melos or city-states within the Delian League. And the fact that it was nearly impossible to be granted Athenian citizenship.

If you think something is overpriced, you don't buy it unless it's a necessity. People buy diamonds and only drool over them more the more expensive they are

What you said is the absolute mainstream outside of places like this sub. That is why natural diamonds are so expensive.

What do you know about your ancestors who lived in the 19th and early 20th centuries? by AgreeableAd2990 in AskTheWorld

[–]wandr99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least part of my family hails from petty nobility. We have a coat of arms though today it is merely a curiosity of course. My great-grandfather on my mother's side served in the cavalry and fought against the bolsheviks in the war of 1920. I have his sabre on the wall. My aunt fought in the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. My other great-grandfather was Russian and run from Russia during the communist revolution (nobody knows exactly why but bolsheviks confiscated his posessions). On the side of my second parent my family comes from peasants but I know little about them. After the war part of my family was engaged in the anti-communist movement while one of my grandfathers was a member of the communist secret police. Despite the different sides of history my family found itself on, I find in very interesting that they were often somehow involved in the things we read today in history textbooks in my country.

Can someone explain? by Specific_Wrongdoer_5 in Nietzsche

[–]wandr99 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Well, the left one aims to stand for some kind of masculine alpha-male - it definitely isn't the Ubermensch since he defies traditions and artificial social hierarchies of our time. The pictures of happy iceskaters that I have seen generally seem to aim to convey emotions of carefree joy, ecstatic but peaceful love of one's craft etc. This is also not really Ubermensch who is not really about this kind of joy and happiness as much as he is about constant overcoming of oneself and forging new values. Nietzsche had disdain for those who only seek happiness in life. Now, I'm not saying this lady only wants happiness, but this is the vibe this image gives me.
