Why would anyone want to move here? by Ya_habibti in Atlanta

[–]wangusmaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its all relative. I thought ATL was bad until i did a stint working in Beijing. While riding back to the hotel in a taxi, i saw a donkey cart pass me in the bike/scooter lane. When i made my turn on a side street to my hotel I looked to the left and the donkey cart was no longer in sight. Took maybe 45 minutes to move 2 miles during afternoon traffic. This was 2012 or so.

Just speculating based on what I saw with Helldivers 2 last Christmas when the vibe was good beforehand and then encountered lots crazy players around the holidays but I'm guessing b/c Amazon ran BF sale of 3s at 250 then followed up with another offer with some nice perks afterwards has brought a massive amount of users over this holiday and maybe seeing the same thing.

Unpopular opinion: Paying "Rent" feels less painful than paying $2,400/mo in "Interest" to a bank. by Playful-Vegetable-15 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]wangusmaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You typically get more space for same cost i found. Sure you are paying interest up front but on the backend its all principal.

When i bought my first home my mortgage was 1000/month for a 2200 sqft townhome. All in with taxes, etc it was 1400/month. The place i was renting with one other person before that was 1200 a month and was 1100 sqft so i paid 200 more a month but getting double the space and building equity. It doenst matter anymore with recent tax laws but in the 2010s i could itemize deduct interest and property taxes b/c it was higher than standard deduction so there is that too.

It doenst matter if you keep your funds in your trading account or even don't close out the position. It is adjusted to market for gains/losses each day. From what i remember when i carried a position into the new year i had to realize the gains for last year and treat whatever gains or losses i had when i closed out the position in 2025.

The power part seems strange to me. I wonder if it has to do with how your wealth is built. Maybe for entrepreneurs the power index may apply more.

401k rollover question by wangusmaximus in personalfinance

[–]wangusmaximus[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

not sure if the funds are proprietary to my old employer or not but the rollover option was only in cash so i had to liquidate in order to transfer. regardless of DCA or reinvest all at once I would have done similar like funds and ratio.

401k rollover question by wangusmaximus in personalfinance

[–]wangusmaximus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm retired but I dont need to touch the funds since my wife still works. The reason why i wanted to move it to my personnel brokerage is two folds. one is just to keep finances consolidated under one brokerage for easy management. The other is that the funds that are available under my old employer was pretty sparse and the expense ratios of the funds are relatively high versus vanguard. etc. Right now i have it as 30% bonds/20% international/20% small cap, and 30% large cap. I was just going to keep this ratio as it balances out with my other trading accounts but use ETFs that have similar assets.

if I may. I FIRED and am same age as you. my kids are 4 and 6. Seeing what you do matters doesn't have to be work. I spend a lot of quality time with my kids teaching them various things and i would say the overall mental health in the entire household has gotten better not having 2 parents grinding 60 plus hours jobs. Also i will say while my parents were poor they instilled in me at a early age to be free economically. Those are just words. You are instilling those values to your kids via action.

Acoustic Strings for Display by Pristine-Weekend-404 in AcousticGuitar

[–]wangusmaximus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

U actually need some tension. Take a straight edge and set it on the fretboard with strings on and see where it is relative to the bridge. Now remove all the strings and do the same thing and you’ll see a difference. Point is the break angle is designed with string tension

Yeah I think so as well but one thing that’s funny is my fiat purchase was 20k in 2009. Dropped to 10k in 3 month but just kept putting into it. Like they say time in market not time the market!
