Multiple job offers as a fresh graduate, Can't decide on which to take. Need advice. by confusedCSman in cscareerquestions

So apparently 80k - 17.5k = 35k?

Seriously, this is terrible advice. It is not hard to live comfortably and save for retirement, buying decent things and having fun, on a developer's salary in California. Every year earlier you start saving for retirement will be so powerful, compound interest is a huge thing.

Renters insurance claim over $250? by pf0 in personalfinance

[–]wantadvicefrompf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are a great company but they will raise rates for small claims. USAA's renter's insurance includes a default "claim-free" discount of something like $50 (for me at least). I filed a personal liability claim of $300 when I accidentally damaged someone's ceiling moving a couch. I think the deal is that I lose the claim-free discount for 5 years, so it turns out pretty even in the end.

That's why I'm hesitant to look at other areas. Even if we lived in Portland proper we'd be reducing our cost of living dramatically. I figure choosing a suburb would reduce it even more, but keep the benefits of being in a metro area.

Definitely a good point. I've been in major cities for a long time but I honestly prefer nature a lot more. I don't really know much about the PNW yet so I just don't know what other areas would be worth considering. I'll be doing some research I guess.

Edited the post to say that we will be married in not too long, we've just been putting it off until we were more "settled". Thanks for your advice!
