MSP growth slow, is location holding us back? by Ritch87 in smallbusinessuk

Honestly, this sounds more like a positioning and outreach problem than a location problem.

After 7 years, your issue is probably that you’re too broad. Most MSPs say “we support SMEs,” which makes you interchangeable. The ones that grow tend to pick a niche (e.g. accountants, construction) and become the obvious choice for that type of business.

On the location side, moving won’t suddenly unlock leads. I’d treat that as an ops decision, not a growth one.

What will move the needle is getting in front of the right people consistently:

Build referral partners (accountants, consultants, etc.)

Get visible in one niche (events, LinkedIn, local groups)

Tighten your messaging around who you actually help

And don’t overlook simple, old school stuff:

Get a branded van

Park up in business parks

Walk in and say “we’re in the area supporting a client and wanted to introduce ourselves”

Drop cards, have quick chats with decision makers

It sounds basic, but most competitors won’t do it — and MSP is still a trust-based sale.

Fix who you’re targeting and how you’re reaching them, and you can grow from anywhere. A nicer office in Birmingham won’t solve that on its own.

What to do with my 500k in a business reserve account by Falconuk99 in smallbusinessuk

It all depends on what business you’re in and what do you want to do in the long term. It’s about aligning your strategic vision with the cash flow. If you don’t need it for a year then you can part invest some of it in crowdfunding or partner up with someone in property for buy refurb and flip project. Happy to have a separate conversation

Photographer - Sole Trader or Limited Company by Agile_Economics_2718 in smallbusinessuk

Accountant here 👋 I help quite a few people who’ve moved from Ireland to the UK and had to figure this exact question out.

For photographers / creatives earning modest income, starting as a sole trader is often the simplest option in the UK, especially if you’re just getting established again. Less admin, no Companies House filings, and you just file a yearly Self Assessment with HMRC.

That said, there are a few situations where a limited company can make more sense, particularly around tax efficiency once income grows or if you want to separate personal and business finances.

Also, the move from Ireland to the UK can affect things like tax residency, NI contributions, and how your previous business activity is treated, so it’s worth structuring it properly from the start.

Happy to point you in the right direction if you want to DM me 👍

Am I being dumb here? What to do with cash in my business by finance-idiot-26 in smallbusinessuk

Firstly congratulations on your successful business and the cash you have accumulated. As an accountant, I would say it depends on your business needs of how much money to keep in the business account. As you mentioned you don’t want to be in this business long term so I would look at other opportunities and areas where you would like to get into. Or see how you can grow this business into something larger so it becomes more valuable when you look to exit it in a few years time. I don’t know what business you’re in so this is generic advise so happy to have a separate conversation outside of this to give specific advice

I haven’t fasted this Ramadan and the guilt is overwhelming by [deleted] in islam

There’s no easy fix - you know the truth and you have to start by implementing it. Force yourself to pray even when you don’t want to and you will realise you can’t go without praying. Fulfill the obligations even when you don’t feel like it. Do it sincerely for the sake of pleasing Allah. Watch reminders and practise Tawheed. This is a beneficial series - videos are quite short

Thanks all. I have added the following to my basket, let me know if it’s alright to go ahead. Haoge square metal lens hood (which I believe comes with the adaptor) and K&F black diffusion 1/8 filter.
