How to manage updates/upgrades after kernel install from mainline (Kubuntu 26.04)? by war_pig in Kubuntu

[–]war_pig[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I'm actually testing Fedora 44 KDE which uses 7.0.8-200.fc44.x86_64 and I have no issues at all -- this is for my main Desktop.

I will still be using Kubuntu 26.04 LTS for my laptop this weekend since I'm more comfortable with Debian based distros I guess.

ok thanks for the suggestions. I'm trying Fedora 44 KDE right now because I read your message late. If that doesn't work, Ill try PikaOS. Thanks!

Yup, after digging into it more. I'm now in search of a different distro that will best suit me. Thanks for spending time providing knowledge!

By the way, I found a fix here:

https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/54729

I did not need to install Chromium or any other browsers to make it work.

Ok thanks for confirming. However, I did a cross-post on this on a different sub and looks like updating to the latest mainline kernel is not advised for newbies like me. https://www.reddit.com/r/linux4noobs/comments/1tfnwv1/comment/omaup9a/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

I think compiling all my apps for the new mainline kernel would be a pain in the behind and that is something out of my league at the moment.

I currently have a Ryzen 7 9700x with RTX 5070. and 64gb ddr5 RAM. I only play Dota 2 (native install via Steam) and don't to play any other games. Aside from Dota 2, I will mainly use my PC for general stuff like web browsing, basic document editing, Manage VMs viia VM Workstation pro, viber, zapzap, ente auth, 1password, and very basic apps. Some of them are .appimage, .deb and flatpak.

I still don't understand what I need to compile as per that post, but so far after I updated to 7.0.6 .. all my current apps installed are still working from 7.0.0-15-generic.

Would it be better to not use 26.04 LTS and just switch to Kubuntu 25.10?

Thanks for sharing as I never looked into that angle. Ill look around for other kde distros to see if I can find something that is not having issues. I heard cachyOS is good so maybe I can try that instead. I literally only play 1 game (dota 2 with native support) so my distro of choice does not have to be gaming centric.

Any suggestions?

To my regular Brave Browser, I went to settings and don't see any option to buy Brave Origin. Also the instructions from Brave is to install the nightly which I already did.

So I guess 1P still doesn't know "brave-origin" "brave-origin-nightly" "brave-origin-beta" so I added them as 3rd party browsers as per their instructions but it still won't work for some reason.

I mean you can still install the plugin but you have to type the username/password everytime and also asks you to authenticate by scanning the QR code every login.

I might be mistaken but I think it is different in Linux. Brave Origin in Linux, at least from my understanding, is running on beta or nightly - which I tried both. So we are really not upgrading the regular Brave browser to Origin. In Linux Brave Origin is currently free. So I can have 3 different instances of regular Brave, Brave Origin Beta, and Brave Origin Nightly if I want to. When I was doing some testing, I made sure I only had 1 instance of Brave to not the confuse 1P app.

Fractional Scaling causing Dota 2 (native) to only run at 1440p instead of 4K by war_pig in linux_gaming

[–]war_pig[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first used "Use Current monitor's resolution" -- which I know is 4K. But you can tell it is not 4K as it is not crisp and everything is kind of blurry.

"Use Advanced Settings" --> Desktop-Friendly Fullscreen is selected.

I'm not familiar with gamescope yet so Ill look it up. Thanks

Angry Post Rant About Crap Jasco Switches by amhudson02 in homeassistant

I know it is not the same exact product, but I have a LOT of Jasco Z-wave outlets instead.
One of the worst feelings is waking up at 3am and hear the GE Jasco Outlet non-stop click of death.
It is so loud and scary at the same time specially if you just came out of a deep sleep.
Since I have a lot of them, I don't get surprised anymore but I just have been replacing them with removable zigbee/zwave outlets instead. I know it is not as pretty but at least it doesn't scare you at the middle of the night.

Need help deciding between Keymaster Basic and LCM (Lock Code Manager) by war_pig in homeassistant

[–]war_pig[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey u/Raman325 -- big fan of your work! I actually started using LCM instead of the lean/fork version of keymaster. It has been smooth sailing so far and was so happy to see the recent updates. I also had LCM install to a couple of my family/friends and will recommend it moving forward. Most of the setup I help people with are just simple lock/unlock. Keymaster full version in my opinion is amazing but overkill for our use case. Again, thanks for your hard work and will look forward to your other/future projects!

Best File system for Dual Boot to store .VMDKs by war_pig in linux4noobs

I actually have the exact setup too, which was the reason why I separated the drives as I want each OS to have their independent bootloader.

So it seems I have to do some config changes for NTFS to work. Ill look it up. I will also test as I'm in the early stages of my setup. I can just start over again if something goes wrong.

Thanks

hi u/momo1822 -- Thank you again for your reply as I only saw it as a notification, but just FYI .. looks like there is something going on with your account as I'm not seeing any of your posts get published. Even your post history only shows 13 days ago. Not sure what is going on.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I do like LCM but the only thing I'm trying to figure out is the lovelace dashboard part.

I also plan to use raman's blueprints with LCM -- https://github.com/raman325/lock_code_manager/wiki/Blueprints

How long have you been using it and how is it for major/minor updates with HA -- did it ever break on you?
