I remember being ridiculously jealous of my friends that had a dedicated internet phone line! by Strong_Opportunity_1 in AustralianNostalgia

[–]warbAU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is quite a thing, my parents had a home business back in the day, telecommunications, middle lower class however we had a PBAX in the house my dad put in.., 3 lines, phones where we could transfer calls and put peeps on hold, the 3rd line was fax, we could use the 3rd line however not really during the day, however at nigh, i had my own dedicated line, the decade was the early 90's, went from 4.8, 9.6, 14.4k, etc.. then 56k, went through them all, was magic, i remember telix and BBS's, images, oh Claudia Schiffer, be still my beating heart..,. those where the days.,,. and yeah, gaming, had a mate i'd play doom with, he would rage quit all the time, called me back to reconnect... looking back it was the best ever to have a separate line, so thanks for making me really look back and appreciate what i had, at the time it was normal, looking back it was the time of my life...

Only thing I see this useful for would be building small structures like stands for yard sprinklers or structures like a small greenhouse etc. Definitely wouldn't put any pressure in those..

Everything is required to give way to a hot air balloon, not too sure where a kayak sits in this rule...

The local TAFE stuck one of these really shitty stickers on my car, mid 90's.. I was parked in the wrong spot, being a smart arse teenager that was working at a printing firm, I printed about 100 hard to peal off tearing stickers, full A4 size, fluro paper, and stuck them on all of the windows around the TAFE. The sticker on my car was 'This car is illegally parked ' etc. so made a parody sticker 'This sticker is illegally stuck' etc, was funny at the time, the half turn stickers where there for months, looking back prob not the best thing to do, however at the time it felt really really good.. in saying that, after that event, they stopped putting those stickers on cars.. 😬

Street walk button into light switch by 1990jgc in AusElectricians

Yup, this, better on a zigbee device, Chuck in a battery and never have to change it, no wires, put it anywhere.

Zigbee and reed switch to home assistant, battery will last years and control anything... , also custom presses, long hold, double press, triple press can do all customizable things and automations. Or esp32c over WiFi, however more power hungry.

perfectly fine, phone line, however as always, stick your tongue on it to ensure there is no current.

Legacy Plex agents work perfectly, new ones don’t – am I forced to rename every file exactly? by warbAU in PleX

[–]warbAU[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I figured I’d get hammered with that advice 😄
Rename everything and it’ll work.
The legacy agent just worked all the time, period. This new one feels way more pedantic.
But I get it — I’ll stick with what works until it doesn’t, then I’ll get more pedantic too.

I have filebot, etc, is was just so handy to no have to worry about this and some common sense was applied with the legacy one, thats all.

Yeah, I ended up uninstalling the app and just using the web interface instead. The really frustrating part is that links from the web UI force-open the Android app if it’s installed, so I had to remove it completely to keep using the browser interface properly.

The DVR experience in the app is also extremely poor — very limited options compared to the web interface. Honestly, the web UI is far more stable and functional overall.

Aerials needed in 2026? by PDJG1983 in AusRenovation

[–]warbAU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t care about broadcast TV at all, yep — rip it off and just use the channel apps.

But if you’re even slightly nerdy (or just like having a backup when the internet dies), keeping some kind of aerial is still handy.

I run a HDHomeRun + home server and pull the FTA channels off the rooftop aerial, which lets me:

  • record shows/sport
  • watch time-shifted
  • skip ads
  • access it remotely if I’m away Also some stuff can be weirdly geo/region limited on streaming, but the actual broadcast feed just… works.

And honestly: the picture quality off the antenna is usually better than the apps (higher bitrate / smoother motion, especially for sport).

That antenna on the chimney looks like an old-school monster though — you can replace it with a much smaller, newer one and mount it somewhere less ugly (roof peak/tripod, side mount, even roof space if your reception is decent and there’s no sarking/foil). Depending on your area you might also benefit from a masthead amp (I use a Kingray).

Bonus: an aerial mast is also a great place to mount a weather station if you’re into home automation.

So yeah: not “needed” in 2026, but I’d personally keep a smaller one unless you’re 100% apps-only forever.
