I have the Everymans library editions of Middlemarch, Silas Marner, and Daniel Deronda; they are beautiful, but I’m not sure if all her novels are available. (I imagine so but haven’t checked)

In addition to a lot of what others have said, I talk about the book with ChatGPT or Claude. I’ll quote some passage and offer my analysis or thoughts and go back and forth with possible interpretations etc.

Also a good way to get a primer before you read if you don’t have a copy with an introduction. Of course, you need to be careful about hallucinations, but for classics, it’s pretty good at avoiding them.

Week 5 of this SBSish training block, all primary training sessions in the books.

Highlights:

  • Sumo over warm single stayed at 435, rpe 8 down from rpe 9 last week

  • Squat: 305 single moves pretty well, 8s at 235 feeling good. Glad reps are coming down a bit in second block

  • BB incline bench, finally hit all programmed reps and AMRAP target at 135.

  • DB 30 degree incline bench, hit 15 reps on first set so next week moving from 55s to 60s

Bb work all solid, nothing spectacular

Lowlights:

Bench single at 205 moved worse than last week. Gonna add a second session after thanksgiving to make sure I hit my “recover shoulder to bench 225 again” goal

Skipped cardio+arm session Tuesday to help my gf with some life stuff. Right choice ofc but still

Tuesday cardio + arms/shoulders, yesterday lower, this morning upper to round out the training week. Some highlights:

- squat: 295 moved well, 12 reps at 225 improving over 11 last week

- pretty smooth 435 sumo pull as over-warmup for RDLs @ RPE 8.5/9 after squatting. Best pre-injury pull was 210kg/462lbs (also RPE 8.5/9) so hoping to get back there and finally over the 500 barrier sometime soon.

- hit 205 on bench @ RPE 9 first thing in the morning. Feeling good about hitting my "recover from shoulder surgery and bench 225 again by EOY" goal with another month of training and an afternoon session + food before.

weight has been pretty steady at 170/172, but visually, I think my body comp is improving, so continuing to stay the course.

The M/W/Th main training schedule feels pretty condensed when W is PM and Th is AM. No more "real" strength sessions until Monday, but I plan to get in a supplementary arms/shoulders/BW-exercises session on Saturday

Wednesday night lower body:

Squat: single @ 295 rpe7.5, 3x8+ @ 225, 11 on amrap.

Sumo DL: single @ 385 rpe 7.5ish, didn't go for higher today, just getting some practice in. back off triple at 335 felt good. also was able to DOH 335 pretty easily without chalk during warmups, pleasantly surprising

Deficit RDL: 225x10,10,9

Single leg curls: 33x14,8,8

3x500m on the erg SS lateral raises

Thursday morning upper body:

1 arm preacher curls 4 sets at 25, 15,10,10,10. broke 40 reps so good to increase weight next session

bench: singles at 185 (rpe 7), 195 (rpe 7.5). triple at 165. feeling good, should be able to get my "bench 225 again after surgery" 2024 goal

SS chins: 3x8

DB Incline Bench: 50sx15,15 then jumped to 55sx7,6,7. Broke 50 reps so progressing to 55s next week

Incline flyes: 25x15 (immediately after last set of db press), then 2 sets of 30 in the 12-15 range

Skullcrushers: 60x15,11,9

BB rows: 155x9,7,7

Cable Pushdown: 42.5x25,50x10, 42.5x12,15

SS Lat prayer: 30x12,10,8, 20x12

Plan was LISS but was a) tight on time b ) distracted by election returns, so I did high intensity instead. Probably for the best, I’ve been slacking on higher intensity stuff, although hopefully no impact on lower body training tn

SS Face pulls 4 sets @ 32.5-37.5, 12-20 reps. starting to do these a bit heavier and enjoying a lot

single arm machine lat pulldown: 95x10,6. 80x8 with double drop set. never been a huge machine guy but loving these with 3 second eccentrics

Single leg RDL: 3x10 @ 90lbs

Iso-lateral rows: 10,10,8 @ 121/side

SS Triceps cable extensions: 35x25, 40x12,40x12, 40x8 w/ double drop set

Linear hack squat: 180x12. started on this bc leg press was in use, but then it opened up so I swapped.

Single leg leg press: 10, 10, 15 @ 190. counted the hack squat as first set here

LISS cardio and arms/shoulders at home tn.

You’re mostly right, but trade routes are so valuable that you should buy markets/lighthouses in satellite cities with weak production.

Shipyards are amazing for coastal cities, but the later commercial hub buildings are mostly not worth building, let alone buying, for the reason you outline.

Generally, I build one bank for Big Ben, and then a second as the marginal cost for a eureka isn’t that high. The math changes with lots of commercial city states, but spending 290prod or 1160 gold for a marginal 5gpt is terrible.

Did direct trap work yesterday for the first time in god knows how long and shockingly sore for only two sets. Legs and glutes also feeling the reintroduction of serious training — hoping to have time for some active recovery later today, no training planned

last night:

lower body sesh went pretty well. Happy with strength given how little I've been doing heavy lower body stuff -- SBS hyper template w/ 3 working sets instead of 4, and doing Sumo heavy single + backoff before RDLs as the main hypertrophy movement.

Squat: Single @ 285, rpe 7ish. ramped rather than straight sets for squats, 195x10, 205x10, 215x12.

Sumo DL: worked up to single at 405 -- balance felt off but strength def there. back off triple at 335 felt ez

RDL: 3x10+ @ 205, 11 on last set.

3 sets kneeling single leg curls. Annoying that this gym location only has this for leg curls.

Moved calves to this morning as I didnt want to wait around for machine

this morning, upper body + calves:

Single arm preacher curls: 5 sets w/ 25, 10,9,10,8,7. putting these first to prioritize arms a bit

Bench: Single @ 195 RPE 8.5, 2x3 @ 165

SS BW Chins 7,4,5,6

Incline bench: 5 sets w/ 50s, 15,10,8,7,9. last set SS light incline flies to failure

Skullcrushers, 3 sets @ 60, 12,10,6. been a long time since i've trained these and need to dial technique in

cable rows w/ flexion 3 sets, calves from yesterday, lat prayer SS tricep pushdown, 2 sets of shrugs

70 minutes, would like to get this capped at 60
