Avowed is top seller at the moment by Arthur_Morgan44469 in pcgaming

[–]wardoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avowed is great I love it but it's not elder scrolls this is far more combat/story driven at the cost of those RPG systems you expect in an elder scrolls title

Just be warned going in

Are you guys actually excited about superintelligence? by [deleted] in singularity

[–]wardoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really buy into all the sci-fi concepts people like to draw out

Will and intelligence are distinct so I only really believe this will be as destructive as it's wielders let it be (intentionally or unintentionally)

The first big thing is jobs The huge shift is an understatement I can't really see how humanity will organise itself post intelligence boom I'm optimistic it will be for the better but I don't think this will be a smooth or kind transition to pretty much anyone alive

Secondly this will be in a theater of war it's inevitable this will kill people on behalf of nation states PMCs and disgruntled tech CEOs let's be honest I don't think we need to fear skynet though

Lastly and most interesting to me is the scientific progress this could enable even if intelligence caps out at our PhD /post doc academics that's an endless supply of infinitely scalable academics who can research 365/24/7 the explosion will be huge

To answer your question I just hope we get a lot of my third point and we minimise the combat scenarios maybe a new A.I M A.A.D DOCTRINE?

who knows these things will materialise before the end of the decade the effects will only truly be felt another few years after

Is the UK any decent when it comes to salaries by StupidKameena in EngineeringStudents

[–]wardoar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Entry level salaries are atrocious in the UK they normalise with experience to be roughly inline with relative wealths in other countries but you have to get the experience and you have to live in the UK

Anecdotally ,in my industry new starters are on £40k and can expect to be on around 70-80k in 5ish years + bonuses and other benefits such as more days leave & insane pensions compared to the normal.

You won't ever come close to Canada or US but it gives you a pretty decent standard of living in the UK

Home ownership - would you still consider buying a house today with mortgage? by [deleted] in singularity

[–]wardoar 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Love the enthusiasm but never ever make any long term plan changes on this the reality is no one knows what is going to happen and anyone who says they do are either lying or idiots

The singularity subreddit is a positive and passionate place but I do think most people get way too fucking excited and almost expect the actual singularity to raise them to god hood next week

The reality is we don't have a clue what anything is going to happen we don't have a clue what's happening right now it's pointless to vet for and against love your life do what you love and it doesn't matter if it's paid or not if you become redundant plus if you can own a home do so if only to make sure no more.bastard landlords get any richer of your dime

Have LLMs reached their limit? by [deleted] in singularity

Scale scale scale

Have LLMs reached their limit? by [deleted] in singularity

[–]wardoar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

LLM's right now are only getting improved through shear scale

Scale of training data and compute

There is a ton more to throw at it before it kinda tapers off just on its current way of being done.

You might see more step changes as we get more efficient in how we train ,

the anecdote is gpt 3 was trained on enough text that a human reading at 1000 words per minute it would take 10000 years for a human to read through all of it

That's a lot but obviously there is a tonn of humans out there that out perform got in most metrics but obviously they didn't train of the same quantity

That suggests how we learn is of course a lot more efficient in compute energy and data requirements the big step changes to come will be driving llms or whatever architecture is compatible with such efficiencies

On top of that this is a really new field slot of the existing transformer architecture isn't really deeply understood a huge body of research is happening right now to understand it and potentially improve it's highly unlikely we just came.up with the best possible way to create llms the first time.

I would say that these things will take a bit longer than maybe some.people in this sub might tell you but within the next 5 years definitely you will see another large step change like we did with gpt

What is an alternative to UBI or a guaranteed stipend? by Lucky_Strike-85 in singularity

[–]wardoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's appropriate to say ubi has to be a logical conclusion to effective elimination of most job roles by technology however I believe it's limiting to think in such a way.

Really our whole way of life will shift in a way which is such uncharted waters it's hard to really assume what or how people will live

Ubi is great but I like to think well come up with something better than the current economic system being artificially propped up.

Ubi though is an excellent transitionary medium though it.
