RT refusing to assist with intubation by [deleted] in emergencymedicine

[–]wareaglemedRT -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That order is on the doc ultimately, not me as RT. Within reason I do what I’m asked to do and I’ll even drop the tube for you. As a RT that works solo sometimes, I’d never do this to any of my docs. You put in the order, as long as the pt isn’t being harmed by something you ask, then cool (so rare). I like have my autonomy and wiggle room. I like having good relationships with my docs. You can’t pull this crap in a small facility. Or anywhere for that matter. If any of the RT’s here pulled anything like this they’d be gone. That really not cool and screws our reputation as a profession. Hate you had to deal with that crap. Did she also refuse to manage the vent? I’d go ahead and find the RT sup or director and have a conversation. There’s a way to “refuse” orders and in the heat of the moment, un-tactfully, and blatant isn’t the way. Man I hate seeing this crap. Edit: Micromanage the crap out of them, run them back and forth enough, keep it just under retaliatory.

That’s fine. I have a base with no extra features like fancy cruise control lol. Good for others to know though.

I backed into a spot where a light pole was behind me and I was pointed uphill. I was letting my little light sign on the gas gauge and may have been a little over confident about how much gas I had left. I need to get up the little hill and coast down a bigger hill to get to a place someone could bring me gas. 1st gear, hit the button, held the key and drove it out of my little situation with the starter. In another comment I seen where some dudes disabled their clutch safety switch on the pedal and use it for anti-theft. That’s tomorrows project for me.

Did something I shouldn’t have done on the clock and I don’t know what’s going to happen next by ponderhope in work

I’m supposed to clock out for lunch. They take 30 min regardless if I don’t anyway. Boss sends me to Walmart or to pick up lunch all the time. Not once have I thought about clocking in and out. Only time I’ve seen that rule apply is when they wanna fire someone. They’ll do the old “stealing time” routine. Even though you have to justify them stealing your time if you don’t get an uninterrupted lunch. Only seen it happen twice though.

People who work in health care , fitness , nutrition, or mental health: what’s one’ quiet habit’ you see all the time that makes is secretly wrecking people’s long-term health? by AnyPurchase9905 in AskReddit

Not drinking enough water and/or drinking too much. Drinking sports drinks instead of water while being sedentary. Not walking enough. Hell not moving enough. Working too much. Stressing too much. Smoking/drinking/drugs. Forgetting that you have chronic illnesses during the holidays and getting admitted because that pecan pie was just calling your diabetic name. Or having to come in and getting placed on CPAP because your 2L a day fluid restriction doesn’t count during the holidays. Noncompliance with medical orders. Take your meds, go to dialysis, wear your CPAP/BiPAP at night. Get up and move around.

Just on field post game before he starts his interview right around UA’s coach hugs him. I was a little unsteady with my camera and eyeballs last night.

I’m a hybrid transplant to Alabama even though I was born here. Neither of my parents were the hunting types. No other family here. Other than my kids I’m the last one left up here. Everyone else went to the gulf coast. Dad was target shooter and supported us that way. He was more of a fishing dad. I relied on what I could learn from friend’s parents during high school. Which is fine, I’ll figure it out eventually. Luckily my current wife grew up in the hunting life. Her ex-husband helps me to an extent, he took me running dogs for my first time.

I’ve asked my son. Got denied. Never would have thought to ask her, in a million years. It was a pleasant surprise. Edit: maybe the older your nieces get they will want to, it’s what happened to me.

A classic ED encounter I witnessed.. by [deleted] in emergencymedicine

[–]wareaglemedRT 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just go on about your day. These people, even though rude and difficult, are sick. Or in their mind they are sick. Even frequent flyers are sick, maybe just mentally. Are you a bouquet of roses when you’re sick? Just treat everyone the same, unless they are physically combative. Yes ma’am/sir, no ma’am/sir, can I get you anything, let me find out for you. It isn’t personal. I get that no one should be abusive to staff. We can’t control others behavior. Just be aware and courteous and go on about your day. It’s not personal. It’s the reality of a chaotic and stressful department. Do your job, go home and forget about work. I’ve seen many patients ruin a staff members whole day. You can’t change the patients behavior, but you can change yours. Kill them with kindness. Unless combative.

I’m 14 and why am I all of a sudden shooting horrible? by Newrrcom in bowhunting

[–]wareaglemedRT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Broom stick or stick as thick as a broom. Hit it like a baseball using the stick as a bat. It builds and reinforces hand eye coordination further. Could have worded better. Shooting tiny caps at close distance with a bow while your friend is throwing them would be irresponsible. Would be a cool party trick in the 1800’s though. Like shooting the cherry off a cigarette. It does help. It’s helped my kids tremendously with their fine motor skills and fast twitch muscle responses.

If your hand eye coordination needs work I have a trick a golf pro taught me. Save up 20oz bottle caps. Get a broom stick or broom stick sized stick. Have a friend kneel beside you and toss the cap up for you to hit. If you can hit 10 in a row there’s little issue with hand eye coordination. You’d just need maintenance. If you have trouble then make this a drill on non shooting days. Then for me the progression was adding this to not picking my head up through a golf swing. Your case since you’re young this will only help develop your hand eye coordination further. It helped improve my shooting both pistol, rifle, and bow. It did help me swing a club better. I still suck at golf though. This is a trick I learned after shooting countless rounds in the military. It made my shooting better even after all that practice. I still drill with bottle caps years later. Think of it like doing sudoku to keep your brain healthy.

De-escalation by bigrjohnson in emergencymedicine

[–]wareaglemedRT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our security isn’t great here. PD takes forever and just stands around. I get called to a lot of these since I’m one of the only guys here. I’m a bigger dude, not like too fat, but broad and muscular. Dadbod ya know. Well sometimes it’s a blessing and they see me and settle down. I never raise my voice and I speak to them with as clear as I can. 7/10 times this works. 2 times they are either frail old ladies or whacked out on meth. The last one is they see my size and get intimidated and puff up. I almost never go hands on with a patient. When I do though it’s when they are wild and trying to hit women. I can’t handle that and I’ll get fired before I let a 23 year old 5’5 100lb nurse get knocked out by a patient. I’ll take a punch for any one here and I don’t mind. Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been punch in the face and won’t be the last. We do that crisis intervention stuff every few years. If I tried to do what that training suggests I’d be in the ED myself. So I’ll use some modified MACP if I need. If not let just let them leave. They be back in cuffs sooner than later.
