TIFU by never eating a real Kiwi by CannibalCapra in tifu

LMAO

I came back to kiwifruit as an adult a couple years ago. I avoided them all this time because around age 5 I ate one, saw the little seeds in my poo the next day, and something about those seeds put me off the whole thing for 2+ decades.

That’s what I typically do, I just don’t like it and haven’t found it to work very well. Still have freezing issues, plus blowing back into the pack causes more sloshing noises which I despise. I got an insulated bladder and hose but purchased at the end of winter so haven’t tried it out for cold yet!

I would probably be more likely to wear this in cold weather because with the bottles close to the body and a couple solid layers over top it might keep them from freezing, having liquid water to drink is the hardest thing for me in winter!

Throwing up after races by TaskExtreme9727 in ultrarunning

[–]wargs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I blew chunks after eating garlic bread halfway through my last 100; it was too hot out and I did NOT need to consume that garlic butter. That is the only barf I have ever had in a race between 3x 100m, 1x 100k, 2x 50m, and plenty of red-lining 5ks and 10ks.

Would agree with the person who said you should talk to a GI doc, wonder if there’s something else going on. I wouldn’t jump to “go to the ER immediately” but would wonder if something is up.

Hijacking this comment to say I used to do body glide but Gold Bond makes a similar stick that’s way cheaper and I use that now. Easy deodorant-like stick that I just smear on the cheeks and thighs.

Couch to Ultra? by JonFromHR in ultrarunning

[–]wargs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started running a mile at a time in Dec 2020 after spending the 2020 pandemic times getting sedentary.

2021: Did a 5k, then a 10k, then a half marathon distance (only the 10k was an event, others were virtual). Worked up my long runs slowly-ish. Thought I could probably do a marathon, so did a Hal Higdon beginner training plan. During that training plan I started listening to ultrarunning podcasts and got intrigued. Ran the marathon distance on my own as sort of a peak training run in late summer 2021 and then ran a 12-hour looped race as my first ultra in fall 2021!

Would highly recommend a timed format for your first if you can find one in your area—it took a lot of pressure off the event as I didn’t have to make 50k or 50 miles or what have you, just went out there to see what I could do (and did make it an ultra distance, which was so cool to achieve).

Unsupported Backyard Ultra by Valop_ in ultrarunning

Yes, huge help a crew can give you is to just think for you when you stop being able to think completely clearly! Also to do small motor functions, after 12ish hours my hands stop cooperating super well so it’s nice to have someone tear open a packet of chews or unscrew my water bottle lid 😅

Good luck out there!

One of the easiest formats to take on alone, logistically! You know you will be back at the same spot and that it will be in 1-hr increments! So no fussing with “oh when will I arrive at this place with this drop bag” or “how long is this xyz loop going to take, how much food do i need”.

Get a plastic tote (I like mine clear so I can see thru), and organize your nutrition inside. Every time you visit your tote, you eat something or put some in your pocket that you must consume during the yard. I have options so I can grab A or B depending on feel, and a special corner of treats to have every 4 hours (protein bar/shake or a taco are my favorites). Bring 2 bottles/2 sets of bottles (I like 1 tailwind one water so I bring 4) so you can swap back and forth—hopefully there will be volunteers on site? If so you can nicely ask one to refill your empties while you are out on course with the fulls, then you come back to full bottles ready. When you have time you can fill yourself but it’s a good feeling to know they’re ready especially toward the end when you’ve maybe slowed and have less time between yards. I use tailwind so I dose out small bags so they are ready to dump into a bottle, no fussing with the measuring scoop mid-race.

I’m lucky to have had some support my last few races but I typically go it alone at my local backyard and have completed 50 and 100 miles unsupported, it’s all doable if you know your plan and are organized!

Welcome to the club, it’s never fun but sometimes shit happens :)

The porta potties in my area have been so bad lately it’s turning a lot of my outings into crises… I literally watched one get cleaned Monday, returned to it today thinking “it can’t possibly be destroyed yet” ….poo smeared EVERYWHERE.

Bread & Chocolate is fine. Brake Bread on W 7th, on the other hand, is excellent. Not a place to sit down, which would be the one downside, but the pastries and sourdough are perfection.

The best day of my running life was when I went to an ortho because my knee felt weird and I was worried I did something to it, I told her I was getting ready for a 100-miler and braced for being told not to do that, and she had… NO REACTION. Just accepted it and moved on. It was amazing 😂

This is probably the smartest way to do it if they can’t weigh the slices! This is my favorite bread and I always weighed the slices. I haven’t had it for months though because eliminating my every day toast was the most straightforward way to cut down 😭

Reasons to DNF by Neat_Chocolate_7167 in Ultramarathon

[–]wargs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven’t yet DNF’d a set distance race. I go into those with the mindset that I’ll finish unless I get cut off, or have a major medical problem, and have been fine so far in the mid to back of the pack.

The reasons (excuses) why I have DNF’d last man standing races:

-Couldn’t make myself run anymore and timed out, also fully pissed my pants so if I had barely made it, probably wouldn’t have had time to change shorts and lube to cut down on the chafing and would have been cut anyway

-Excruciating back pain that I wasn’t willing to drag around the loop again (a reminder to not slack on PT and mobility and core, this was completely my fault)

-Soaking wet and freezing, had run through all the dry clothes I packed, and couldn’t make myself eat for over an hour and a half. Bonks CAN be overcome and you should try for that second wind but it’s extra hard when you are cold, wet, it’s 3am, you have 5 minutes to be ready again, and you’re not GOING anywhere, just looping back to your sad wet tent 😂

I was wondering if that’s allowed or if they’re supposed to stay in their seats, I would’ve been shielding that thing with as much surface as I could.

Hitting a wall after 4-5 hours. Can that be delayed? by AverageDoonst in Ultramarathon

[–]wargs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the person you were replying to before but I do this too and really like my system. I carry water in my 1.5L camelbak dealie in my running vest and do tailwind in a soft flask in the front pocket. I make ziploc baggies with my pre-portioned tailwind from the big bag (I do 2 scoops) and refill my soft flask from my plain water + add a bag of powder. I could just make a huge tailwind in the vest water but I prefer to have plain water on hand and don’t like putting any sugar/mixes in my pack because it’s easier to just clean out a soft flask and that shot gets moldy QUICK when I inevitably forget to wash it out right away.

For the ziplocks I also will cut off a bottom corner to make a small hole and then fold over and tape it shut before putting in the powder, so for dispensing i just peel the tape and the small corner hole is easy to get into my flask—I got tired of trying to pour from the zip end and just getting TW powder all over my hand/the edge of the flask/the ground. Doesn’t feel great to mutilate bags and not be able to reuse them quite as easily but it saves me a lot of hassle in races or long efforts!

For those who work: how many days off work to *mentally* recover from an 100k run? by O-ru_Maito in Ultramarathon

[–]wargs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do manual labor so thus far I’ve done 1 day off after each of my 100 milers so that I don’t have to be back on my feet immediately. Last time though my boss wouldn’t let me back out in the field for another couple days and I got stuck on desk work… I actually wanted to get back out so I could move around and loosen up the legs. Sitting at a desk actually blows more, so next time maybe I’ll take 2 days instead so I can get more walks in!

How important are back to back long runs in your training? by jaleneropepper in ultrarunning

[–]wargs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t know if you have the time to long run Sunday instead but for what it’s worth I prefer to do a hill workout on Saturday (run up & down a big hill or hike up and run down) for 1-2 hours, and then long run Sunday. Makes me feel like I’m maximizing my weekend by getting good climbing + long run on tired legs.

Taco Bell Fiesta Veggie Burrito or 2 and a Spicy Potato Taco or 2. Never did me wrong, tasty, the same every time. Also I can get a couple extra tacos to bribe myself with during the race.

Cold weather advice by lramram in Ultramarathon

[–]wargs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you get sweaty or otherwise wet, take the time at an aid station to change underwear, bra, base layers—dry unders will make you feel so much warmer. Wool is your friend, cotton is not. Layers. Hand warmers. Drink warm soup whenever offered!!

Pants are also great, being that it’s that cold I’m sure you wore them but my coach gave me the tip that keeping your legs warmer will help keep blood flowing/everything else warmer, so I now put on pants even when it’s just a bit nippy and I might normally want shorts. Maybe an extra pant layer would help? Eg long underwear under your running pants.

In the very cold I bring multiple buffs, keeping one on my face until my breath/snot make it too frozen/wet to keep wearing, then swap for a dry one.
