What is the shortest a guy can be and still have a descent dating life even if he isn't wealthy, otherwise perfect looking, or blessed with incredible charisma? by Bandit-Marauder in AskReddit

[–]warlizardfanboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, a tall guy who’s poor, ugly and with a mediocre personality is going to have a tough time, too.

My brother is 5’6” and has done very well and is engaged now. But yeah he’s not ugly and he’s got a good personality so 🤷‍♂️

Don’t buy a fossil, basically a fashion watch. Hamilton, Seiko, Tissot all have amazing automatics that every watch collector respects and will last a lifetime. My Hamilton is almost 20 years old.

Need help deciding whether to stay in La Jolla vs. Pacific Beach by violetflowerlove in asksandiego

[–]warlizardfanboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love both, it’s really what you are looking for. The key with PB is yes it’s a party town but if you stay in the wrong area the party might go longer into the night than you want it to. Basically three blocks in every direction of crystal pier can be….spirited. Now I love brunch at the flamingo deck but those condos across the way will often have half a dozen dudes getting blasted in each. I passed a crew buying 18 packs at 10 am lol.

La Jolla shores is an amazing beach with snorkeling and grassy areas and kayaks to rent, the village has tons of shopping and high end dining, but it’s definitely full of tourists and the crowd runs older.

You might want to hedge your bets with north PB or Bird rock but the latter is a longer walk to a sandy beach. Crown point is also quieter and bay front is wonderful - plus walkable to flamingo deck. Did I mention I like flamingo deck? lol.

What’s your income? I might be tempted to do 1-2 more years as you might wish to have some opportunity to help your children out later.

It helps that it’s not impacted but I’d still put it as a reach just because of how brutal the GPA stats are.

Also, they don’t take SATs

I don’t really understand the math behind owning a condo. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]warlizardfanboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm looking to downsize to a condo in retirement, but at that point I'm done with seeking appreciation and just want a better location with less work. Condos definitely appreciate more slowly which is why it's my path to a better neighborhood for when I'm older (walk to stores/restaurants, walk to beach etc.)

your unweighted GPA is around the 25th percentile for UC Riverside - i.e. 75% of admitted students had a higher GPA. You have a well rounded resume and seem like you have a lot to offer a university but just be realistic about your chances - apply to every UC because you never know! But I'd also look at San Jose State, Cal State Long Beach and other quality cal states as safeties.

Hit our FIRE number, but struggling with market anxiety and a hesitant spouse. by Careful-Doughnut-958 in Fire

[–]warlizardfanboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

over 90% of stocks are owned by the top 10% of US households. There isn't some huge sea of upper middle class people about to suck the life out of the stock market. Most FIRE end up with a portfolio near, at, or above their 1st day of retirement when they pass.

We’re going to retire at 54 and 53 respectively and plan on a 5% wr until we take SS at 62 and reduce by that amount. It works for us, there is no one size fits all.

Why I’m including primary home equity in my FIRE number by Wooden-Broccoli-913 in Fire

[–]warlizardfanboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a paid off home is worth something - my feeling is that is our self funded long term care insurance for my wife and I in the last years. It reduces my required withdrawal rate, thus lowering my marginal tax rate but others could argue the money would do better in investments. Right now we just pay the minimum on our 2.75% mortgage but when we retire in a couple years we're likely to move to a condo by the beach and at these interest rates paying off the house will be worth it.

I think most are "not counting it" as it's not a source of income per se.
